    Re: Porsche Cayman GT4...

I never said it was better than a Carrera of the same year, just faster.  indecision  While the Carrera 3.2 is revered in many circles, I personally found them a little boring and slower compared to the better versions of the early 911 (pre-74), but still more character than the 944/951/968.

has anybody heard of whether the rumoured "GT4" is actually being taken care of in Weissach ?

No confirmations heard so far. One thing seems to be already settled: No more six cylinder engines in the next Boxster / Cayman generation.

Re: The Cayman GT4 Myth Has Started

Thanks, let's see what they will come up with - I would not mind a turbo charged 4cyl. in a Cayman...

I assume that people who would be considering a track cayman would actually not mind the engine as long as it is in the right performance territory...I would be curious for example how a cayman R would be like with, say, the A45 AMG engine ? ... if Porsche re-invents the 944 / 968 turbo / S  times, so be it ...

    Correct!

The Alfasud flat 4 was a very characterful and punchy engine. Are there any in existence now? Have you had a chance to see/hear/drive these cars?

I don't know...Porsche will then come up with some stats from motorsport history to prove that there always have been a heritage of non-flat whatever engines but being called "boxer"...Smiley .... wait and see ... I am looking forward to seeing the cayman GTS when it will be available at the dealers and well, who knows what will happen next...

I actually see one of those pretty often here in the little village where we live. Never driven in one, but they sound great.

There was a 1.3 Ti (2 door) that was superb. Great, revvy engine, excellent brakes and the handling was a revelation at the time for a front wheel drive car. Very fast on country roads.

Try to drive one of those if you find one in good condition.

The later 1.5 engines were not so good.

Autocar are suggesting a 400BHP 3.6L flat 6 for the GT4. Suggesting a hike of over 50BHP/Tonne over Cayman GTS. It looks like it is going to happen as even Porsche Retail are retweeting the article!

Interesting.  Seems unlikely, since it wouldn't share so many parts with the 3.4 or 3.8 currently sold.  But, I like the sound of it (better output than the 996.2 GT3 motor of 3.6L).  Hope it has real dry sump.

Re: The Cayman GT4 Myth Has Started

There is a GT4 racing series and the Cayman is on the entry list.

    http://gt4cup.com/cars.php?market=false&key=9

I presume the  new upgraded Cayman GT4 will also compete with more ambition. This will be give an image boost to this ignored model and eventually it will replace the entry level Carrera, as the 911s move up in price.

Re: The Cayman GT4 Myth Has Started

Expectation have always been high with the Cayman in the past and then it was the usual 10 hp engine upgrade and a lot of marketing. If you take the specifications from the website you quoted, then it will be the 10 - 20 hp more for the GT4...Still, I am always happy to read more of those rumours on the internet...I think, it would already be a huge step alone for P. if they would really offer a GT3-like PDK with a well designed aerokit and a "clubsport package"...

there is NOTHING in the history of the street version 911s like the loud raw metallic sound of the Carreras from the early 70s , whose engines  ( forget the exhaust ) sounded like someone manically / maniacally slapping a hollowed out motor compartment with a chain faster and faster and faster as  it revved !

    Re: Porsche Cayman GT4...

Don't forget the Subaru!  The WRX STi makes 300+hp from a Turbo flat four and my brother in-law modified it to 450 EASY with larger intercooler and Turbos.  Very nice motors.  Unique sound, not certain I like it.  I can hear him arriving from miles away.

Nice video! Funny - very similar spec to mine indecision

Most interesting for me was his comment about the steering.  I wonder if some of the calibration lessons learnt in the GT3 development are making it though to series cars.  OTOH,  the steering on mine improved dramatically with the suspension/geometry change - perhaps it's just the geometry spec'ed for the -20mm cars.

Amongst the many "proper" Alfas I owned I had an early Alfasud 1.2, a 1.3 Ti and an Alfasud Sprint Veloce 1.5...The buzzes, whizzes, snaps and crackles from the induction (particularly from the twin two choke downdraught Dell'Orto carbs fitted to the  Sprint Veloce) and exhausts were pure music. Smiley

Nah - can't get delivery on one til  october it seems, amd if I wait that long I might  as well look at used GT3s or see what happens with this GT4,

i just meant my boxster - similar colour, brakes, seats, suspension, manual, etc.

    Re: Porsche Cayman GT4...

Not sure what to think about the review... It's nice that he is so positive about the car, but it's nothing more than a Cayman S  with 15hp more. That the Cayman is a brilliant car, is old news. He makes it look like the GTS is some kind of magical thing.

Seems like not only Mclaren is paying him, but Porsche too. angry

On a positive note: First review in a long time where he isn't going sideways for 90% of the video.Smiley

    Re: Porsche Cayman GT4...

I think it is the combination of the different geometry of the -20mm suspension, the PTV-diff, the dynamic 'lager' (no idea how to translate this in English) in the Sports Chrono Package and the sports exhaust that make the difference. Also don't forget that different engine software can offer more than just an increase in horsepower, I'm thinking of different throttle mapping, engine response, etc. Together all these small factors could be the 'holy grail' for the Cayman.

    Re: Porsche Cayman GT4...

Except for the extra 15hp, all these options are available on a Boxster S of Cayman S. I'm not saying the GTS  is not a good car, but it simply cannot be much better than a similar equipped S.

That said... If I was going to buy a 981 right now, it would probably be the GTS, albeit without the Alcantara interior and with a PDK instead of a manual.

true, but probably this is the first test car configured this way (maybe until now he only tested a PDK, one with the adaptive suspension or something in that sense).
I see your Boxster is sold already, did you order a 911 in the end?

Yes, my Boxster is gone... since this morning actually Smiley   (Still not sure if it was the right decision)

Haven't bought or ordered anything new so far. I'm pretty sure that it won't be a 911. If it is a Porsche, than it will be another Boxster. For some reason, an Alfa 8C spider is also very tempting though....

What I really would like however, is a classic (preferably 1960's) Italian sportscar/GT, but finding the right one takes time and patience. Smiley

I have options enough... We'll see what I'll end up with Smiley

    Re: Porsche Cayman GT4...

True, could be the first time he drove one with all the sporty options.. Whilst they make little difference to absolute laptimes, they certainly make a big difference to how the car feels. Those seats for instance really make you feel connected with the car. I know mine feels radically different from a sparsely-optioned car.

I went to enquire about an Alfa 4C last Saturday; was told they are all sold out for the next 2 years (or perhaps they just didn't like the look of me again - been basically told 'no way' both times I asked at motorshows, too).

    Re: Porsche Cayman GT4...

I've watched the various you tube videos of this putative GT4 mule but don't get a good sense of what powerplant may be in it:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLIPC9_jW6I

Care to speculate? What about these options...

A- the long rumored flat 4 turbo that's scaleable to 395hp?

B- a "real" GT4 version of the current 3.4L with "Preuninger approved" engine modifications to increase redline, lower valvetrain mass, etc making  375-390hp?

C- the cynical option: a ECU remap of the current 3.4L with 360hp released only after the base 991 is refreshed with the requisite "tick-tock" power increase?
