Unless you plan to track the car, horsepower today is simply a marketing tool. It's only something you can brag about, and it becomes a "mine is bigger than yours" thing. With maximum speed limits here in the US at 65mph and increasing traffic, there are few places where you can use more than 280hp. I finally took my 987S out for a long highway drive yesterday and nothing was missing in terms of horsepower, handling or braking.

Hey, how are things on the north shore?
Waiting for my 987S to be built-ship date hopefully by June. I hope to share your sentiments when it finally arrives. I will tell you, even here in Westchester, I've had no trouble utilizing nearly 500BHP in other cars, in select places, of course. Getting up to highway speed in a couple of heartbeats is never dull, but the overall Boxter experience should be pretty rewarding.
    Cheers

Re: Factory engine upgrade for 987 coming soon?

You probably have more opportunities in northern Westchester and beyond. I was on the LIE yesterday heading out east and there were cops everywhere. I was lucky to get it up to 75-80. In the past, I did manage to once get it to 110 on a secluded stretch of service road, but that was about it.

What colors and options did you get?

Re: Factory engine upgrade for 987 coming soon?

Guards red with sand beige half leather, PASM, Sport Chrono w/out PCM, short shifter, 19" Carrera S, Bi-Xenon package, Bose, Sport steering wheel, Preferred package, and heated seats

Re: Factory engine upgrade for 987 coming soon?

FWIW, ordered an 06 Boxster S, 3 weeks ago, and was just informed by the dealer this evening that the factory won't be able to fit the order in for the 06MY. Build date now in Jul for a Sep delivery for 07 boxster S with 3.4l cayman engine.

Obviously very disappointed with the wait, but excited to get the bigger engine.

Re: Factory engine upgrade for 987 coming soon?

    Can sbdy confirm that ??

Re: Factory engine upgrade for 987 coming soon?

    RC, can you confirm this?

Did your dealer say "I assume that it will get the 3.4 engine"? or was he 100% sure?

I really don't understand why Porsche doesn't put out a model above the "S"... BMW (Z4 M), Mercedes (SLK 55) and many more car manufacturers do not have a problem with their top of the notch roadsters being more powerful than higher positioned models with the basic engine (e.g. MB SL 350 or BMW 730). Why is Porsche so keen about keeping the 911 at the top? After all there are many car enthusiasts that prefer the Boxster over the 911.

Re: Factory engine upgrade for 987 coming soon?

I agree JS, I would absolutely be willing to pay more for a more powerful mid-engined Porsche roadster. But they can keep that rear-engined relic!

    Just a little teasing there...

The dealer is correct about the engine in the S...

Re: Factory engine upgrade for 987 coming soon?

Yes, it's coming out. Boxster S Turbo.

    ???

Although I wouldn't be surprised if someone did turbo it (or has already).

Re: Factory engine upgrade for 987 coming soon?

    haha.

My dealer said as of now it's a rumor.

Not really, scab's Box S will have a 3.4L (unless they are able to get an early build slot)...

Re: Factory engine upgrade for 987 coming soon?

    We'll see

Re: Factory engine upgrade for 987 coming soon?

One rumor at a time, please!

Re: Factory engine upgrade for 987 coming soon?

He said it would be a 295hp cayman 3.4 l engine--100%. He did say base price would be a little higher, but no numbers; also colors would be the sameI already have a slot in the July starting build, but I still have to go down there and haggle over price again. I'm assuming the options (btwn what is offered std and what is option) are the same....I'll see.

If you don't mind what % discounts are you getting on your car so far?

I had a few options on it (PASM, PCM, Bose, 19" wheels, sport shifter, etc...), MSRP at almost $69k. Had it down just over $2500 from the MSRP price.

--slight threadjack...now that I've got to head back to the dealer...I've been back and forth on colors. Had ordered Atlas grey with sand beige interior, black top (live in southern Az and really need lighter interior). I also like the basalt black, midnight blue, and forrest green possibly with the stone grey interior. Any thoughts?

Hmm, a second straight year of price increases for the Boxster S line...

    2005 was 53,100 -- 2006 was 54,700

Re: Factory engine upgrade for 987 coming soon?

You're already close to 911 territory

But I love GT Silver / Cocoa

    VERY good color combo!

Re: Factory engine upgrade for 987 coming soon?

Porsche is making little money on the Boxster in the US because of the prohibitive exchange rate.
Hedging helps, but it gets expensive as most traders think the euro should remain around its current value in the future.

So, Porsche has to raise their prices somehow. This is one of the reasons the Cayman S is being marketed as "between Boxster and 911" to justify its unexplicably higher price. It is illogical that the hardtop 987 is more expensive than the soft-top version. Either Porsche drops the price of the Cayman, or they raise the price of the Boxster.
You know which they will choose.

The logical choice (from the finance perspective) is the price increase on both.

They can't really do that, since the problem is that customers are not fooled and know the Cayman is overpriced. Even more overpriced now that the Boxster gets the same engine.

I completely agree with what you are saying, however don't be surprised by price increases across the board. It just leads to a little more discounting at the dealer level.

Re: Factory engine upgrade for 987 coming soon?

Maybe they'll put the new engine in the Boxster and then correct the pricing. Boxster S will sell for more than the Cayman S. Correct might be the wrong word...

Re: Factory engine upgrade for 987 coming soon?

I'm having a difficult time buying into all of this. It'd be great, I'm sure. I'm in the negotiation process for ordering my Boxster S and I would certainly want to know if this rumor is for real.

Re: Factory engine upgrade for 987 coming soon?

Great news! Finally I can get my Cayman S cabrio!

    It isn't a only rumour.
