CloseStuck in traffic yesterday (M25 motorway) when engine overheats. Cue a three hour wait for recovery whilst enduring a few choice comments from the motoring public in the UK.....
Car currently at dealer who have confirmed front offside fan failure. Now just waiting to hear if warranty will cover it......

Can they establish whether the engine overheated to a serious extent? Or there was a warning message prior to that happening?
BTW, shouldn't something like this be avoided by the operation of Start-Stop? i.e. engine not left idling in stationary traffic?

Stop-start deactivated itself and although warning light came on, it wasn't safe to pull up. Hoping not too much damage.
They advised initially that it may not be covered if it was a stone or something that jammed the fan.....still waiting to hear.

If so, could the possible damage be covered by your Motor Insurance policy as accidental damage?

I think you are confusing a couple of things here. The fans in the rear over the engine are not engine cooling fans.

The front radiators have thermostat controlled fans cooling them when the temperature is above a point and when the car is not moving fast enough so there is no ram air effect to cool the radiators.
The fans in the rear take out temperature from the engine compartment when the spoiler is down.

Sorry to hear that mate, hope they will place this issue under warranty. Even a stone shouldn't kill the entire system, and also how does one get a stone idling in traffic anyways?

Not covered by warranty apparently. Seems a stone jammed one fan causing it to stop. Other fan on it's own s not sufficient to col the system. The good news is that they will only charge 30 minutes labour and no harm done to engine. Will pick it up this morning. It did need a clean anyway so.....

Radiators that are in front of the fans, often get pierced by stones, are corroded by the accumulation of leaves and debris. When I get my car washed I ask the people there to clean the ducts with pressurized air. You cannot imagine what comes out. One time I found a small bird

@ Bridgar: You are not the first to suffer from a fan jamming due to road debris getting caught between its rotor and its shroud. There's only a small gap to maximise the fan's efficiency and it only takes a small item to be thrown up from the road surface from behind the shroud (by a tyre or the air stream) to get caught and jam it. The debris will not have passed through the radiator and AC condenser in front of the fan.
I assume that you had already stopped and called for assistance as a result of a display warning of excessive coolant temperature, and didn't wait for steam to start billowing out of the engine bay?

I did get some steam and loss of fluid. (the M25 motorway has no hard shoulder where it happened so it was horrid to watch the gauge creep up but I had not other option) It's been checked and double checked with thankfully no adverse problems.
As an aside, I was surprised how busy the OPC was - not just Macan interest either!

Best thing to do in that situation is to turn as many electrical consumers off as you can and also the aircon (to reduce engine load) and turn the heater up to maximum with full fan to help dissipate heat from the engine.

Reminds me of about 3.5 decades ago while I was a passenger in a 6 cylinder truck that was towing a boat in the summer time. When the engine began to overheat, the driver cranked up maximum heat for the passenger compartment (we did "roll"/ crank down both windows). It seemed so logical and yet still not comfortable!

I once drove all the way from eastern Ohio to just past New Haven Connecticut in the middle of a hot August night (so nothing was open) with a radiator blockage that caused the car to overheat. Heater on full blast the whole way, except for New Jersey, which was mostly downhill to the George Washington Bridge, after which is was back to sweating the rest of the way. Ah, those reckless days of youth...
