If you had just one wish for the next generation 911, what would it be? Smiley

If you are hearing this Porsche designers, please, PLEASE... Design us an engine bay where we could actually see the engine! Every other carmaker puts time into adorning the engine bay, except you guys... I think it is lazy and dumb...Smiley

Doing that won't increase the car's performance at all.  Wouldn't you rather the engineers and designers spend the time on performance and drivability improvements?

winkI agree, but don't you think that looking at what powers your car is sexy?

Re: If you had just one wish for the next generation 911, what would it be?

Return to size of 993 with electro-hydraulic steering ( hydraulic pump driven by electric motor like 997 Cup cars).  Those who want bigger coupe can have the coming Panamera coupe (929)

Re: If you had just one wish for the next generation 911, what would it be?

    #1 is Less weight.

But....It would help Porsche to have a internal campaign for its engineers to drastically reduce the number of sensors and the complexity of the electrical systems . Maybe build a "Russian" version of the car and market it as a long life vehicle. Wanna know why 996/997/991 used prices suck?  They have such complex systems with expensive parts and sensors that are sometimes hard to diagnose and find replacements for that it overwhelms the logic of buying one without a factory bumper to bumper warranty.

Re: If you had just one wish for the next generation 911, what would it be?

Less technology, less (visual) parts sharing arocss models. They dont need to look all alike. See Ferrari as an example.

    Off enjoying my car...

Re: If you had just one wish for the next generation 911, what would it be?

I agree w/ Grant.  There is a lot to like about my C4S except that it is really a large car.  You don't feel it so much in the cabin, but you do when parking or standing next to it.  The 991 dwarfs the 993.   The steering feel is not as poor as  often portrayed IMHO, but then again I wouldn't complain if  Porsche returned to the previous hydraulic set up.

Re: If you had just one wish for the next generation 911, what would it be?

Keep it simple (stupid) - less weight, less complexity, built to LAST and run forever, increase the warranty period substancially!  All these things would drive up resale values dramatically which would allow sane people to buy new ones.

Re: If you had just one wish for the next generation 911, what would it be?

Stop the Turbo (and above)  and replace it a proper Ferrari mid engined rival. The Turbos and the GT2s are good cars but they are the great pretenders in the company of Ferraris, McLarens etc. And anyway the Carreras will be turbocharged soon, so no need for a Turbo with a capital "T".

Make the GT variants the top of the range

Keep the Carrera as entry level 370 hp, Carrera S 430 hp and GTS with 500+ hp and contain weight. A GT3 type of variant without the wings would be welcome too.

I'm sorry to disagree but for me that would be a crime. Killing 40 years of history like that?

Thankfully I'm quite confident Porsche would not do such a thing.

The Turbo is an icon. The fact that it looks more or less like a normal 911 but goes like a supercar is key to its appeal. They would lose many customers if they did that.

I, for one, would be happy if they stuck to the evolutionary design and kept the car the same size OR smaller...but not 1cm longer or wider. More options made standard would be nice too.

Re: If you had just one wish for the next generation 911, what would it be?

FlatSix911 Let me second that for you. The Turbo is an icon. If Porsche didn't hold a lot back the Mac and Ferraris would have to work much harder to get any edge what so ever. Look at the GT2RS! It's still competitive today. The 991GT2RS will be amazing. Just not my cup of tea given family and weather etc.

Re: If you had just one wish for the next generation 911, what would it be?

Ok, so I am the weirdo again.

I would want Porsche to fit bigger turbos on the Turbo to make more power, but also add hybrid system to fill in the gaps on the low end lag. So we might see something like a 650HP Turbo :)

The electric motor can also take care of low speed bumper to bumper traffic, or comply with some of the no idle laws around the world to keep creature comfort running while the engine is off. Then there will be the fuck you part for congestion charges like those in London. As a hybrid it will also get some of the best parking spots in garages next to handicap parking :)

Re: If you had just one wish for the next generation 911, what would it be?

    1. Size , the 991 is too big. (entirely agree with what Grant wrote on this)

    2. A 911 Club Sport, with few basic options , few colors (from the PTS palette), less powerful  and track oriented than the Gt3 .  A great weekend 911 for winding roads that one can enjoy also at moderate speeds. (no the Cayman won't do it for me). Price it near the standard Carrera.

Re: If you had just one wish for the next generation 911, what would it be?

    Smaller

    Lighter

More exterior colours (that applies to all Porsche ranges) Including yearly special colours that match that year in decades (2016 gets a colour from 1966, 1976, 1986, 2017 gets 3 different ones from 1967, 77,87)

More interior leather colours (that applies to all Porsche ranges)

If it looks like brushed aluminum, it should be metal. I hate painted plastic. It also screams cheap.

See above, get rid of the ubiquitous painted aluminium look in the interior and update. Satin nickel plated would be a nice change, anodizing or a satin black chrome.

A new “Club Sport” model which looks like a regular Carrera (or 997 Sport Classic) with a very spartan interior (no radio, sunroof, less sound deadening, basic carpet, non-electric seats, etc.), lighter weight body and glass, GT3 ish suspension at least power kit level of power (or one with a base Carrera engine and one with a powerkit+).

Oh, and smaller and lighter as well.

They have the know-how from the 918 program.

I even figured out how the packaging works too, drive the front wheels electric only like the 918, the motor goes into the space for the front differential, batteries goes where the drive shaft was. Engine drives the rear only.

I have seen the powerful 918 battery, the size is surprisingly small, smaller than the volume occupied by the driveshaft tunnel. If Porsche do a light duty setup, i.e. less electric range, they can use 1/3 or 1/2 of that pack. Weight won't be much of an issue, with a concentrated weight block so low and central, the cg of the car naturally lowers for better handling and their 4ws system works wonders to mask the weight.

Re: If you had just one wish for the next generation 911, what would it be?

The 991 was designed from the start to take hybrid tech so it should work fairly easily.  Weight issues hopefully won't be an issue. Sounds like a club sport striped down version of the C2 is also needed!

Re: If you had just one wish for the next generation 911, what would it be?

Hmm, striped down road legal track day special 911? Tempting.

No carpet, no insulation, no air con, no radio, no glove box, no centre console, no rear seat and only a fixed back driver seat in cloth, passenger seat extra. thinner glass or maybe Lexan, no sunroof, full roll cage. 100l gas tank. basic dash piece in carbon. Fenders, hood, trunk lid, doors all in carbon like the Singer. Paired it with a NA engine but with full TC and rear 4ws. Bubbled roof panel for helmet clearance, preferably in carbon also. Also skipped all the plastic trim pieces under hood, interior and engine compartment. Pretty much a race car that's road legal.

Re: If you had just one wish for the next generation 911, what would it be?

That would be right on the money as far as my interest in new Porsches goes..... Today I'm all in . Mexico blue. Dream on we all know that will never happen although they could charge more for sure. The plastic " aluminium " gas cap says much..why not machined aluminium?  Customer priorities have/are changing as Volkswagen fully understands.

Re: If you had just one wish for the next generation 911, what would it be?

For it to at least slightly resemble a car costing $150-200K.

Re: If you had just one wish for the next generation 911, what would it be?

I probably have different view at this subject, but since Porsche can't make good looking engines, I don't mind that they're hiding them.... If they want to show off their engine, please let them make a visit to Italy first. They know how to do that! (see Ferrari V12 for example!)

Size of the car is perfect. It's still a small car, hardly bigger than a VW Golf. Also, they can't make a 911 smaller than the Boxster/Cayman. That would be odd....

For me however, the main thing that needs to be improved when the car is this expensive, is the interior. It's the place where you spend all your time driving and that needs to be on par with the car's pricetag. Now it looks like an interior of a car that costs half the price of a 991 Carrera, not even mentioning the Turbo or Turbo S that have exactly the same interior.  So either keep the interior and lower the pricetag (never gonna happen) or raise the interior quality and especially the design.  If I spend that amount of money I want to see it and feel it, when driving the car. That's unfortunately not the case with the 991 IMHO...

Re: If you had just one wish for the next generation 911, what would it be?

All 981/991 are too big IMO, especially the width.  The 986 wouldn't fit down the driveway of my last house so it was only when I moved that I could get one.  Even then, I had to build a new garage that was wider.  And my 987 is on the absolute limit for fitting into the parking spaces at work.  When I had a 991 loan car a while back, I couldn't open the door wide enough to get out.
