    981 Cayman 1st Time @RaceTrack

Last weekend I took my (actually my father's) 981 Cayman to the Korfez Track. The car finished the day brilliantly. It handles very nicely, as expected. Couple of notes:

    - PDK works nicely. I used its autu-upshift function @7800 rpm in manual mode. That way, it was easier than watching for the revs. It helps me to shave couple of hundreds of miliseconds.

    - The brakes are not good enough and after 5-6 laps, brake pedal got softer and the pedal travel increased.

    - The engine is not powerfull enough as expected. Also the gearing is too long. I used 2nd gear in every corner which are around 90-100 km/h corners in average. Only shifted to 4th gear twice which is a little over 160 km/h.

I really like the Car. I would love to have a Cayman GTS. The biggest problem with the Cayman is its lack of torque.

Here are some pictures from the day:

    Old vs New.

    So what is the outcome?

My best lap time was 53,584 sec. Which is 4 sec slower than my 458 italia lap time w/Michelin PSS (49,5) and 5,5 sec slower than my time I did in my 458 w/Trofeo R tires (48,049 sec which is still the Track Lap Record fot street cars.)

Here is the video of my fastest 5 laps of the day and my best time came in 5th lap (the last lap) in the video.

Just to remind you that I have steel suspension, 18" wheels, no Sport chrono/PTV/tune or any upgrade. At the end of the day, I put the car on a digital scale with 20kg accuracy and it weighted 1360 kg with a quarter filled fuel tank.

    Thanks for your post Onur!
How about the handling? Everybody always raves about the handling of the mid-engined platform... how did you like it?

Thanks for posting, I enjoyed watching your laps!

    Re: 981 Cayman 1st Time @RaceTrack

Interesting, especially since you have a high reference point with the 458.

What is the length of the Korfez Track?

Also from you experience in that track how much could a Cayman S (+50 hp) with full sports spec, gain?

    Reginos,

The biggest and probably the only advantage Cayman has over the 458 is that it is narrow body. Körfez is a simple and short Race Track with a total length of 2.0 km. It has 2 short straights and 3 right-left-right chicane. It is easier to place the Cayman through the chicanes because of its narrower body. Additional 50 hp and most importantly additional 80NM torque from the 3.4 engine will help to shave at least 1 sec. 19" wheels, PASM and Sport chrono will help to shave another 1 full second I believe. This means Cayman S would probably will lap 2 sec faster which put it in F430 and 997 GT3 RS territory. At least my friends with these cars lap around 51 sec.

In the last session, I had a passenger in the car who weights around 85 kg and it add full half second on my lap times.

I have ordered Bilstein PSS10 coilover kit for the cayman. Not for track time but for more comfortable and compliant ride than stock steel suspension. However, I will track the car again after the coilover and expect to have 1 sec faster lap times.

    Joost,

Handling characteristic of the car is much better than 997. This is a hard fact. I haven't throughly driven 991 platform but Cayman is one of the most talented cars. The only downside I felt is after couple of laps, I felt a slight resistance in the steering wheel. I guess it got hot but since it is electrical I couldn't understand the cause. Maybe it was the tires but I suspect from the steering rack. I went out the track with 1.8 bar pressure in the tires and came back in with 2.1 So I don't think the tires get too hot for that feeling. The chassie of the car is above its engine; that's for sure.

It is easy to drive its neutral balance. I don't know the alignment of the car but it behaved neutral; when provoked, it drifted as I did in this video:

I'm curious how it will behave with the PSS10's. Smiley

Great write up and videos! kiss Thanks so much for sharing. This is the real world feedback that we need more of on this forum.

Keep up the good work wink

PS. I changed the standard suspension on my old 987 to H&R cup coil-overs and had it properly aligned. Like day and night. It did not ride much harsher, but handled like a go cart. Look into the roll-bars as well. The standard ones are probably too soft for PSS10. I switched mine to H&R too.

Having owned a few 997s and a 987 I find the 991 superior to the 997 platform and a lot closer in handling characteristic to the 987. It in fact feels like a "bigger" Cayman Smiley

But have not been to the track yet... got the first session in two weeks. Will be very interesting.

All I want is more comfortable and less harsh ride. The problem with the stock steel suspension is not the stiffness but the harshness and lack of absorbing the shocks. PSS10 will arrive in a month. Then I will decide on the sway bars but right now I'm not thinking to buy them.

Thank you for the kind words. Smiley

I'm glad to hear that, because the ride comfort is very crutuel for me. Do you know which setting it had? Because there are 10 "clicks" on PSS.
