    The consumer decides.

Each time Porsche made a controversial deviation they have been rewarded by the buying public. The Cayenne is a huge success ten years later, the Panamera opened new customer bases, the Macan shows a great sales promise already, not to mention the watercooled 911, the PDK transmission etc etc.

Similarly, if the 4C (flat 4 I hope) turbo engines are well received and sell successfully it will be case closed because those who vote with their money would have decided. OTOH if buyers run away from the Porsche 4C to buy Elise or TT or whatever else to such an extent that the company is forced to drop the idea, the original doubters will be vindicated.

Everything is decided in the marketplace and nowadays buyers are too informed and too demanding.

See how many automotive brands and models achieve 5 stars from magazines and journalistic videos and purists' assessments but fail to register sufficient sales because they don't meet the public's wishes and criteria.

To me the 'best 911' of the moment is the GT3 . If tracked PDK is a must . If only as a DD or similar, then I would like a manual box.

I feel the opposite (love to shift on the track) and PDK only sounds interesting to me if I can rest my left leg in very bad traffic (if I still lived in Los Angeles or moved to London, for example)

On public roads with traffic I get bored.... PDK makes it even more boring , so , at least , I would like to have something fun to do, like changing gears myself  + performance is not an issue as you cannot use these car to the fullest anyway.

On track, it is another story. I like to be the fastest possible and PDK helps to achieve that + I do not like to be taken over by ''lesser cars with PDK'' if I would be in a ''faster'' one but with manual  + there already plenty to do when you drive as fast as possible , so I do not miss manual on these moments.

I too, am happy with my 991 C4S and will purchase at the end of the lease. I am certainly not willing to pay $130K for  a C4S with the same 4cyl engine that will be in the  face lifted Boxster & Cayman.

Reginos, you are absolutely right and Porsche are insulated because a very large proportion of their sports car buyers are interested in the badge and the sporting prowess of the product is largely irrelevant.  Furthermore, with each generation of car broadening the appeal beyond enhtusiasts, this insulation improves.  The cars also appeal more to the mainstream press, which give them glowing reviews when the specialist press interested in the driving characteristics are more critical.  Meaning the very detailed criticism does reach the majority of buyers.  The 996/997/981 evolution has shown this and BMW more so.

The danger for Porsche is if they dilute the content  too far so that even mainstream buyers are unimpressed.  This leads on to the question whether removing the flat 6 risks that.   Smiley  Its not clear cut.

I wouldn't want to see that happening, even for an entry level variant.

For me the flat 6 is sacred like the shape and the engine position.

They could feel free to do a 4 cylinder Cayenne or Panamera (there is 4 cylinder Mercedes CLS and ML)  if they wanted and reduce average emissions and consumption. But not to touch the sportscars.

I agree with this analysis. Then again I think about my father who purchased his first 911T in 1973 when I was 16. He was always a car enthusiast, and owned many different cars over the years. The 911T was his personal car for daily driving. He valued the motorsport connection for its pedigree and the quality of the engineering it represented.  There was nothing track oriented about him. The car was beige grey w/ a bamboo houndstooth, steel wheels, S instruments, no a/c. Very plain and simple. No one else drove that 911. I learned to see my father in a new light with that 911 because w/o a center console I could watch his footwork while shifting. Everything about him and that 911 was masculine but in a low key, elemental, even spartan, focused, yet still accessible for the purpose of driving to and from where you needed to go.  I always thought that was the spirit of the 911 which I assume we all aspire to in our ownership.  I believe Porsche has tried to maintain the philosophy as much as possible in a world that has changed radically since 1973.

I couldn't agree more and I suspect most of Rennteam agrees.  But the vast majority of buyers who just want a 911 becasue its a Porsche 911 and they fancy a sports car that isn't too demanding?  If the reviews they read are positive (and the magazines like What Car, Auto Express are likely to be positive) will they know or care that enthusiasts think its rubbish?

if at all they would consider to put a 4 cilinder turbo in the 911, they should at least have the decency to stay true to their history and call it 912. I think a model like that just above the Cayman would actually make sense and won't hurt the iconic 911.

because the exhausts are in middle just  like the set up in the cayman

The position of the exhaust tips has nothing to do with the engine configuration. You can basically choose how to do that. :)

Maybe there is an engineering reason behind it (less resistance for the exhaust gases) or they just liked the look...

Where did you find that this is supposed to be a GT2 RS prototype?

I've seen this white turbo with the black hood at some Porsche events. Not a 100% sure but I think it is a "regular" 991 Turbo S.

Of course they could have placed something in it, but I see no clue (as well as the thing with the hybrid theory, which I highly doubt ;))

Re: 991 spyshots thread (continued) (for UNRELEASED models only) Thread Closed

I guess people think this is a GT2 RS prototype because the 918 follows it or doesn't pass it. There can be various reasons for that but the 991 Turbo S is not a slow car, especially with the right driver at the wheel. angry

Not sure how you get to this conclusion because if you watch the video closely, you can actually see how the 918 slips with the rear twice. The driver was not cruising. I don't say that he was driving at full capability but the 991 Turbo S is a pretty quick car on the Nordschleife and we don't know what engine and/or power this car had. Also, the driver makes a huge difference too. If a pro sits in the 991 Turbo S and an average driver in the 918, I don't think the 918 can move away. Maybe this was some sort of 918 driving instructor in front of the 918 or whatever. You never know. The 918 was not cruising, this is for sure though.

4hrs layover in LHR, might as we'll write something.

When we arrived at Zuffenhausen, as luck would have it a couple 991GT3 are heading out for some testing. Sounded really good!

At Weissach, we had a tour of some of rooms, didn't get to see the 919 section but we did traveled through the "GT3" area. Some are getting the new engines there to get prep for testing, but I also saw that car above, and can confirm they are indeed the RS. I stick my nosy head into the cars and see the GT3RS badges on the tech :) the center lock wheels also had RS written on it. But my guide insists those are GT3 only :)

Also see a abnormal amount of Caymans on the ground, brand new off the production floor with shipping plastics all over the body wheel and interior, since the GTS has been released, I suspect those are flat 4s.

It was just us speculating McLaren used best sector times to string together a 6:47, Weissach people says the same thing, unless they get their info for us here haha.
