New 911 is here - question on manual gear

    Hi,
Finally the wait is over for me, 911 arrived last Wed. The manual shifter is not smooth and requires a lot of effort to shift. Does this get better over time?

It did for me, and I've only got 1273 miles on mine so far, after nearly 5 weeks.

Did you get the sport shifter or the standard manual shifter?

I got the standard one, and at first it was a bit hard, but it has loosened up nicely. I think it takes a little getting used to the staggered pattern in shifting from fourth to fifth to sixth. If they didn't have that slightly staggered pattern, it might become too easy to hit the wrong gear and ruin the transmission as well as possibly over-revving the engine, at least for the standard shifter.

Re: New 911 is here - question on manual gear

yes, as per the manual, many components may feel stiff and unwieldy, it is natural due to the manufacturing process and will soften to proper tolerances within the first month or two.

Re: New 911 is here - question on manual gear

thanks. I did not get the short shifter.

Re: New 911 is here - question on manual gear

I have the s/s and having driven several standard manuals there's barely a difference except for throw. Just take the view that this is a precision instrument & don't force it. You'll get used to it & appreciate it !

I remember my early 90's Golf GTi having a stiff 'box & clutch when new, needed respect, but the precision was a dream after several months experience

Re: New 911 is here - question on manual gear

How is it supposed to get "smoother " with time ?
There is nothing to wear in at the shifter .
Will the cables stretch in 1000 miles ?
Mine was SMOOTH AS SILK from day one with 25 mi. on the odometer .
The cable(s)need to be adjusted properly.
Bring it to the dealer have him fix it and don't take no for an answer. PERIOD

Re: New 911 is here - question on manual gear

Aisin's gearbox for the 911s should be smooth and light. Mine was from new and requires less effort than the Getrag box in the 996-which itself I thought was fine. If it really is heavy I'd say take it to your dealer.

Re: New 911 is here - question on manual gear

Ok, now I am confused. I will check with the dealer today.

I was told this by a reliable source. They should be dead stiff when cold but smooth as silk when properly warmed up.

Re: New 911 is here - question on manual gear

?? I can only say as I found it....

Re: New 911 is here - question on manual gear

The shifting get better over time and when the car is hot. I have 9000 miles on mine and it shifts much better than when it was new. It can still be 'tight' when the car is cold, but after it warms up, it shifts really nicely.

Re: New 911 is here - question on manual gear

I just picked up my 997 on friday. Only 15 miles on it and the shifting has been smooth as silk so far even when the engine was still cold. Just FYI.

Re: New 911 is here - question on manual gear

Just to calibrate everyone, I am use to a BMW 3-series manual gearbox and this is my first 997 driving expereince. I do not know what smooth as silk mean. Relatively speaking it is much stiffer than the BMW. However, I took my car to the dealer. The service manager checked and assured me that the shifter is "fine" for a 997. He also asked how I was shifting the car. It turns out that if I use the lower palm of my hand, shifting is much better. I did feel the difference once I started using his technique. I hope that I get use to this or it really loosens up so it feels like smooth as silk.

Re: New 911 is here - question on manual gear

i have the factory sports shift kit (whatever it's called) and I have never experienced (even when the car was brand new) anything bad. Even when cold in the morning, it's always shifted smooth. The clutch was very grabby and touchy at first, but 100-200 miles later it's perfect.

When they say smooth as smilk, it literally feels as if the gear box isn't even connected to the transmission. It feels as if the shifter is just attached there to a box of butter, it's the best way I can describe it.
