Looking for advice on purchasing a 993 C2

Hi Guys

This is probably the wrong forum to ask about a 1997 993 C2, however any kind of input is greatly appreciated.
I have the opportunity to buy an extremely low mileage 993 /C2 and I need to make a quick decision.
I don't intend to make it a daily driver, since I have my 05 C2S cab for daily driver.
I have always liked the way 993 looked and it is the last of the air-cooled P cars.
Anyone on this forum owned a 993? Any issues with these cars I should be concerned, or look out for.

Hey Steve, you should check out Rennlist tons of info on 993s, search for CEL or SAI for some common problems. also p-car.com

Also do a search here, most 993 info is in the "Porsche Board"

Make sure to get a Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI) done, too many misrepresentations out there.

I am currently doing a search to add a 993 to my garage, any low mileage specimen should be snatched up and driven, don't miss out..!

As known is the 993 a troublefree car, altough one may not forget we are talking cars of 10 years old, so there can always be a problem here or there.
I drove a 993 targa for 5 years and didn't know any problems except (only targa) the black alu-part at the bottom of the rear sidewindows which are due to oxidate underneath the paint.
The only major problem wich affect the 993 is corrosion at the bottomedges of the front window.
Also try to find a varioram car (from 96-97) with 285 hp, they have another more viril sound and more torque in the lower revs.

I had a black '96 993 C2 coupe, what a wonderful car, I should have kept it. You may find yourself driving it more than you anticipate. Go for it, I regret selling mine. I never had a single problem, and if the car is truly low-mile, you should be in super shape.

Jeff, I did a search as you suggested. Lots of stuff I did not know about and deffently have the PPI performed

Beltar, the car I am looking at is a Variocam car.

Dilinger, out here 97-98 price ranges anywhere from 45K - 55K depending on their mileage and condition. There are quiet a few high mileage cars out for sale. To my surprise 993s are worth as much as newer 996s

69Bossnine, tomorrow I will grab my paint meter and snake light go through the car as much as I can. I will not settle anything less then perfection.

45K-55K seems awfully high, unless the car has less than 20K miles...

I sold mine 1 1/2 years ago, with 59,000 miles, absolutely pristine, as-new interior, for $34K. And that was pretty much the going rate at that time for other cars similar to mine on the market. Maybe it's an east coast/west coast thing though... Best of luck with it though.

Same in UK. Good clean lowish mileage 993's are more than 996's and going up in value. 993's have a better reputation for being bomb proof...

You are absolutely right.
I've been considering cars with less then 10K mi.
The one I am looking into buying has about 7000miles.
There is a big re-sale value jump once the mileage drops under 10K

Just go for it! It is a true 'classic' and will become even more desirable as years go by (and keeping it's value, i.e. would you ever decide to sell it you're gonna get your money back anyway). Kinda jeolous over here ...

IMHO spend a little extra and buy the 996. The 993 feel to me is no different than the 964. However it was the last of the air cooled

IMHO the 996 is a waste of time if the fella already has the superior 997. The 993 is a completely different car. Old-school, yes.... but in an absolutely iconic and wonderful way. The 993 was the ultimate mix of 911 heritage and purity-of-purpose, with refinement and modern style.

I learned the hard way when I sold my 993 after ordering the 997, that the 997 was not a replacement for the 993. It was a different car. Brilliant, but on a different set of merits.

The 993 was far more connected with the road, and a more pure driving experience....Just slower...and not as fancy inside or out.... Oh yeah, the stereo blew chunks, but I didn't care, the car was so damn gratifying.

Any Porsche fan who can own both should own both.... I've had my eyes open for a low-mile 96-97 993 coupe. No hurry, I just know that when I see the right car, I'll buy it.

I love the thought of having a low milage 993. A buddy actually picked me up with his triple black cab 993 yesterday for lunch and I was giddy just to sit in the passenger seat again of such a classic. It remembered me of my old car and made me feel like a kid again. It's such a different car than a 996/997.

My only suggestion is to look for a 993C2S or 993C4S. I loved that car and it has such a great looking rear end with the red reflector strip and wide body (pic attached of 993C2S rear). Plus, there are not many of them out there so you'll be sure that it will keep its value.

A real bonus would be to find a 993 Turbo or, even better, a '98 Turbo S. But those will be difficult to find.

Read the 993 technical forum posted on the PCA website. Older Porsche were never trouble free and the 993 was no exception. If it is a very low milage vehicle be sure you have all the service records and that they are up to date. A vehicle that just sets will develope its own problems.

Well guys,

Yesterday I got to see the car in person. It was absolutely in mint condition.
The body was flawless, the interior looked brand new.
This car is like it's been in a time capsule.
What a contrast compare to my 997, I mean this in good way. The way the doors open, sound of the motor, the handling etc.
This car was ordered with long list of option that are not common.
Factory aero kit
18" turbo wheels
Limited slip diff with ABD
Red brakes
Oval stainless exhaust system
And much more I can nor remember, that actually pushed the original window sticker to 86K
As soon as the deal goes through I will post photos along side of my 997

The 993 is a really great car, and the way you describe your prospective purchase it sounds like it is worth going for.

One issue I do vaguely remember reading about concerned durability of insulation material used on wiring harnesses of certain cars - I think first production year(s). I guess there would have been a tech bulletin for a fix under warranty. You should check with a dealer if your car was affected (he'd need to know the VIN) and he could probably also confirm whether the fix had been carried out on that car, if at all necessary.

Went to California Speedway yesterday to check out the Festival of speed. First time to see a PDE. Can you say sensory overload?!

After checking out virtually every type of P-car made in person, I came away thinking how much I'd love to have a 993 sitting next to my 997 in the garage. The 993 looks so focused in purpose to me.

Gratz in advance. I'm not so sure I want to see pics of your car; I'm not sure if I can handle another monkey on my back

In the UK, the 993 has become a very sought after car. You can easily spend as much as Pounds40000 on a 993 in mint condition even with high mileage. They certainly do have a lot of street-credibility here for having bullet-proof reliability and a real following among the 'Porsche cognoscenti'. Used car dealers know this very well and apply a serious mark-up.

I really enjoy my 993. It's a very interesting point on the 911 development curve where it has rather modern performance, safety, and reliability, but it still feel fairly nimble and tossable like the early cars (smaller dimensions than 996/997) with the bulletproof build quality and materials (dry-sump motor, bolted-together interior pieces instead of plastic parts that snap together in the 996+).

The only way you can lose money on a 993 is if you buy a low-mileage example and then drive it. I'd rather buy a well-maintained car with 50k miles and drive it with a clear conscience...

I also have a 993 to go along with my 997. They are great little cars. Lot's of old Porsche character, but the 997 totally destroys it perfromance wise.

That's a great 993 you got, the factory aero package is very rare. Great find!
