Nav or PCM software: will it ever be upgradeable?

I'm not satisfied with my nav unit's software. It is not user friendly. It is also cumbersome and inefficient. My biggest beef is if you make a mistake setting a destination in establishing a route there's no way out and you are "punnished" by having to start all over.

My question: as Porsche "gets the message" and improves the user interface of PCM will we with older cars be able to use any improved new software?

Hey, maybe the new stuff will be touch-screen enabled too!?

Re: Nav or PCM software: will it ever be upgradeable?

I would not count on an upgrade. Porsche and the other high-end guys are really slow on stuff like Nav and audio. I have factory Nav, but use a portable unit (PocketPC + i-blue bluetooth GPS + iGuidance software). Much better that the factory Nav.

Re: Nav or PCM software: will it ever be upgradeable?

There's a huge potential market out there in the future for any smart guy who finds a way to hack into "obsolete" (i.e., more than a year old ) OEM satnav systems and offers reasonably priced regularly updateable nav data for use in these systems.

If any of you guys want to pick up this ball and run with it, please remember the guy who gave you the idea and remit a 3% royalty to fritz, c/o rennteam.com.

LOL. I'm a witness to your claim fritz (for .0001% of course )

Very sad IMO. What do they do, just rush these details (software design) thru during development and then forget about them?

Re: Nav or PCM software: will it ever be upgradeable?

You can upgrade it by changing your car and helping Porsche stay highly profitable

Mind you, whilst you guys are highly critical of the current system-and I agree it's not perfect- it does seem so much better than BMW's current efforts. And Mercedes.

I'm sorry, but I DEMAND the thing be absolutely friendly, efficient and "intuitive." Who has got time to f with it and the 150 page manual? Especially when "engine off operation possible only for a short time!!!"

The thing that reeeeally pi**ed me off was when it took me "five minutes" to enter a destination with the map and cursor (in the most cumbersome way possible I might add) and at the last step I screwed up and pressed the wrong button and was forced to go all the way back to the beginning. Disgusting.

This thing is in a car!! Not at a quiet still desktop with a mouse and a large screen.

Re: Nav or PCM software: will it ever be upgradeable?

    Wow! Strong views indeed!

I didn't read the manual much but it seems ok to me. Perhaps the Euro version's a bit different?

Perhaps the relief of it after BMW's system clouds my judgement

Nah, I guess I just slammed down too much coffee, sorry.

But seriously, we shouldn't settle for less-than-excellent, right?

Re: Nav or PCM software: will it ever be upgradeable?

Absolutely. Unless we tell 'em, how will they ever know??

Re: Nav or PCM software: will it ever be upgradeable?

Actually the most irritating thing for me is the GPS error (built in at the insistance of the military) to GPS that means 'she' says 'please turn left' after I made the turn when I'm going quick

Re: Nav or PCM software: will it ever be upgradeable?

I am going to miss my hondas nav, but it will never give me the driving pleasures the porsche will. Saying this I still would hope for better engineering from porsche, merc., and others in the future (with the navs)!
