Those rear wheels could use some spacers.... I agree though... The GT3 rims are awesome!

This is probably a winter setup. I think the Turbo S wheel is the only CL winter setup Porsche offers at the moment.

Winter time in Europe, many owners keep their newly received cars at dealers or in their garages until spring arrives. Smiley There are not many driving around with winter tires, maybe also because a wheel set is pretty expensive. It is actually the same(I think) winter wheel set used for the 991 Turbo/S and I had really a hard time paying over 7k EUR for this set because I drive the car mostly on weekends for a couple of hours, max.. Not cheap.

It is not impossible, you have to take all facts:

    - power to weight ratio the Turbo S is less then 4% better
    - gearbox and shift times

look at the time starting with 40 km/h and 80 km/h, once the GT3 is better the other time the turbo.

It is pretty much impossible because we already tried. You won't believe where the Turbo is after 1000 m (little hint: You almost cannot see it anymore Smiley). The italian review is rubbish or the car was WAY better than it should. Smiley

It's not the shift times - it's the gear ratios.  GT3 has proper gearbox where all gears are used for performance (allows close spacing of the ratios) rather than Turbo S's 6-speed gearbox with a useless 7th gear (for performance purposes).  This allows the GT3 to make more effective torque to the ground than its motor could otherwise deliver.

The other advantage (after the launch portion) is the RWD vs. AWD.  RWD burns less of the engine's power as heat in the additional FWD hardware.  Even so, I think RC is probably correct in thinking the results are a little suspicious.--

Yes, I meant with gearbox the shift ratio and the close spacing. I think that the shift times are also faster.

To have a proof we should have at least 10 GT3 and Turbo S and make a lot of tests Smiley -

It's well known that the GT3 is pushing out much closer to 500bhp, and the Turbo S is substantially heavier.

So the Turbo S has 12% more power but is around 10.5% heavier, so the difference could be explained by gearing?

True, but the torque figures are vastly different.  I am a big fan of the high redline and close gearing though - more fun imo...

True, it is closer to 500 bhp.

Yep, turbo s is heavier but lets not forget that turbo s side intakes and rear wing creates less drag than huge gt3 rear wing... At these speeds - higher than 200kph drag is more important than weight. Also I believe that 4WD someway compensates more weight for Turbo S at 0-150 kph.

All this is in theory of course...

Don't forget that Turbo is wider and that creates lots of aero drag.  Aero Drag is equal to Cd X Frontal Area and width contributes directly to frontal area...

i reckon the results are correct GT3 will definitely be faster Smiley

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 911 GT3 (991)

IMO the Turbo S seemed a bit slower than some other tests. But as for the GT3, how could it be faster than usual? It isn't a turbo which can have its boost altered.

The results, while a bit questionable show that there isn't much difference. If you remove the Turbo's 4wd standing start advantage, the cars are very close in performance, up to their respective top speeds, which are within 2 kmh of each other.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 911 GT3 (991)

We would the magazine fudge the numbers? It is Italian and both cars are recent Porsche models. The difference in time between the TTS and GT3 on the Ring was a mere 2 seconds over a course of 14 miles. The Italian course is 2 miles or so and on a shorter course the GT3 is much more competitive.

IMO there is absolutely no reason for them to fudge the numbers. What I do like about this test is that both cars appear to have been tested together - same day, same driver. The Turbo S' figures do seem a 'bit' weak to me.

Don't forget, the GT3's gear ratios for 4th, 5th & 6th gears are significantly shorter (& better) than the Turbo's - even more than the chart shows since it revs much higher allowing for even shorter gear ratios. It might not have the low end torque of the Turbo but once in its power range, look out.

As for track times, since both cars weren't equipped with the same rubber IMO one must be careful comparing times. I will say that while the Ring is a magical track, I now have concluded that too much time is left  on the table because of the risk factor required. While on more normal tracks with proper (read - safe) runoff areas, test drivers can take a car to its limits without risking their lives!

The GT3 is proving to be Porsche's best performance value.
