    991 Facelift...new engines?

Be prepared: Heard a rumor today that Porsche plans to use turbo charged engines for the 991 Carrera facelift. Torque increase will be huge (up to 200 Nm according to rumors) but the engines will be turbo charged. I don't have more details, sorry. GT3 and GTS models are supposed to stick with n/a engines.

    Re: 991 Facelift...new engines?

I hope the turbo Carreras will remain flat 6s!

    Re: 991 Facelift...new engines?

i dont see a Problem with that. we all knew that the Limit for the flat 6 is Close to 4 litres displacement. Porsche are leaders in Turbo development and surely will produce great engine...

however, what will they call the 911 Turbo in the future ?

True, but I rather would have more torque than a nice sound. Torque is the big thing that misses right now. A nice sound can be created with a good exhaust system. Torque adds a lot more to the driving experience than sound IMO.

That said, we certainly gonna miss the nice flat six sound. No doubt about it....

it's inevitable. Emission regulations demand for these turbocharged engines. We can't do much about it. That's why I admire Audi for still putting a normally aspirated V8 in the RS4/RS5/R8 V8, where all their opponents choose for smaller displacement with turbochargers. But Audi will also replace that V8 probably in the next gen.... unfortunately.

I forgot: No 4-cyl. for the 911 but I'm afraid Boxster and Cayman drivers won't be happy. angry

Speaking of Cayman: Cayman GT4 seems to be a sure thing.

I wouldn't mind if a turbocharged 4-cyl came to the Boxster. It's lighter, more torque and the best part of the 981, the chassis, doesn't change...  So it would be an even better car.  Smiley

especially if no more flat 6 !!!

    Re: 991 Facelift...new engines?

More torque is a must. My 991s feels on low revs kind of boring compared to my 750d torque monster! I dont mind the Turbo... seems the only way to increase torque, HP and same time reduce consumption and CO2!

Yes but the engine revs and sounds so nicely. Smiley

Look at the Panamera facelift: According to rumors, the cars don't sell too well.

Perfect 911 right now: 50 year edition model with powerkit (standard in US/Canada).

    1. Agree 991S 50 years edition is a great looking car!
    2. And agree again - rev's of the 991S is great
    3. Dont agree to the sound as sound is hideous! Was much nicer on the 997!
    4. Panamera facelift.... Diesels are still selling well. But face it - everyone hoped for a more tremendous change with the facelift which didnt happen!

Regarding 2. Revs - maybe the "smaller Turbos" can Rev nicely, too?

I am stil surprised about your hideous sound claim. Last week I drove a 991 Carrera S Cab again and it sounded (again) amazing. Sooooo loud...almost annoying loud.

Are you sure everything is OK with your car? Just wondering. yes

That's exactly why I hardly use the PSE on my Boxster. It's nice for the first two weeks you have the car... After that, it gets annoying and almost embarrassing in town most if the time. It's just too much. I would much prefer a more deeper sound than that sharp tone the PSE produces. That said... When driving somewhere far away from civilization it sounds kinda nice against the mountains surrounding you hahahaha... Dilemma.... Smiley

The turbo motors will make for a huge performance boost here at high altitude.

Apparently everything is fine. I have to admit I get used to and outside the city its a bit better. My father collected his convertible last week and yes - that car is much louder. Why don't you and your father drive to a large parking lot on a weekend and make a comparison? It is possible that the PSE isn't very noticeable in the Coupe with the windows closed but with the window cracked open, it should be quite nice. I have to admit that I listened to two different 991 Carrera S Cabs only, can't remember the Coupe.

Thats what we have planned for the weekend! I will have to hear also the car when I'm standing outside. BUT - even if it is loud outside it doesnt help when I'm sitting inside Smiley .... also - its kind not only being loud - its about the right noise! It just doesnt sound like Porsche anymore IMO.... maybe its me... maybe I should get an Mercedes SL instead - getting old Smiley

    Re: 991 Facelift...new engines?

No its not just you.  I think the 991 sounds artificial, especially with PSE.  The 997 might not be as loud but its a purer and for me, better sound.

For a sports car the high revving N/A with moderate torque is much more fun to drive IMO.  These torque monsters suit GTs more.

You nail it... thats exactly how it sounds!

    Re: 991 Facelift...new engines?

many news have very synthesized exhaust sounds with engineered pops and bangs .. the worst offender is the Jaguar F Type.

PSE IMO is unnecessary. Standard exhaust is loud enough, but also purer and more authentic.

All I know is that it won't be a 4-cyl. Smiley Don't expect a huge power bump though (vs. the Cayman S). I heard something about 360 hp but as I said before, rumors need to be taken with a grain of salt. There is soooooo much going on at Porsche right now, I started to loose count. Smiley

From a production/profit point of view, using the 991 facelift engine for the Cayman GT4 would make A LOT of sense.

Interesting that you posted this RC.  I just put in my order for a C4S (2/14 production) and the dealer said in passing that the NA flat six may soon be a thing of the past.  Didn't pay to much attention to the comment at the time.

    Re: 991 Facelift...new engines?

You can count on this facts:

The 911 will get also a 4 cyl. engine, the S-model will keep the 6 cyl. engine. Boxter 4 cyl. Of course turbo engines.

The Panamera gen II will get a turbo hybrid engine model (550 hp + 150 hp!!! = 700 hp). The hybrid system will increase the weight about 270 - 300 kg!!!! 0-100 km/h predicted <= 3,5 sec for a heavy weight car.

I like the idea that the future Turbo is a Turbo-Hybrid... which will give the extra required push!

Too me the sound is as important as the drive. Maybe because I'm an engineer but I love the sounds of quality machinery, cars, marine engines (my training and my job) aircraft......

if a 911 didn't sound like a 911 I wouldn't 't want one. That's why if I could justify the expense I'd go for a GT3 over a Turbo or Turbo S (sorry RC) Smiley Although I haven't heard the 991 versions my friends 997 turbo sounded so flat and muffled.
