In my personal view, they have ruined the look of the Cooper S. The front bumper looks like a vacuum cleaner nozzle.
Absolutely agree. To me it seems they slowly run out of ideas when it comes to the design of a new Mini. The first series was a perfect modern interpretation of the classic Mini. The second generation still very good, though it had to conceal the higher bonnet due to new crash regulations for example.
But this third iteration, especially in Cooper S trim as the yellow car, is just too much. Also the rear with its (too) big rear lights, but especially the front looks too cartoonish for my taste.
The secret of life is to admire without desiring.

I like this! And yes... this is the 991 of the Minis!
Very iconic car and will be fun to drive again. I always loved our Mini and miss it since we gave it away. If I would have a larger garage I would put one in again!
Same here ! will certainly test drive it in spring...

Very true.
Right now I'm not so sure what I should do: The Mini Cooper S Countryman lease is due in April next year and I need a new smaller car for the whole family (my old mother drives it too). I wanted to get a Mini Diesel this time, I had a loaner with automatic gearbox and it was really fast enough for city driving (surprisingly good) and Diesel consumption was somewhere between 6 and 7 liters, not bad (the Mini Countryman we have actually eats up 12 liters / 100 km in average, automatic gearbox too). Initially, I wanted the new Mercedes A45 AMG but it isn't worth it. Too big for my mother (maybe even a bit too fast) and it is sitting in the garage most of the time anyway. I hate the Smart, so this is out of the question and the new Mini isn't really my thing. Actually, the Mini isn't my thing anymore for a very long time now, they kind of "over-used" the design but my local dealer has a very nice sales person who has a great service and very good prices, so the temptation to get another Mini hasn't died yet. I was thinking about a BMW i3 now but the lease is too expensive compared to the Mini. Also I'm not so sure my mother would get along with this car.
In the end, I will probably get another Mini but I can't say I'm in love with it.

how about an A200?
Is the A200 smaller than the A45?
The Mini Cooper D with automatic gearbox seems to be the best choice for us right now but it seems that the new Mini isn't available (yet) with this configuration. My dealer has a slightly used car (4000 km) for little money which would suit us well but I don't know, I don't really want to buy this crap...oops...car.

VW Polo is too small, Audi A1 too expensive (lease offers not really great). Also the next VW/Audi dealer isn't close and the one close to us sucks (we had an Audi A3 from him, horrible repair shop).

VW Polo is bigger than the Mini, especially if you consider exterior and interior space.
Maybe on paper. The room feel is much better in the Mini, I can't help it.

Hm, definitely have a different opinion on that one. In terms of dynamics the Mini certainly is superior, just not sure if your mother can appreciate that.
We are still in the business for a Mini Diesel but unfortunately it seems as if there is no automatic gearbox for the Diesel base car. So in the end, we may actually choose the current ("old") Mini because of that.

I've seen it and sat in it in L.A. and it looks better in person than it does on pictures. It's bigger, but it still looks good in terms of proportions. Interior now also looks and feels a lot more upmarket, although still typically MINI (some like it, some don't). Overal, I really liked the car.
Biggest advantage IMO are the new engines and especially and finally a decent (ZF?) automatic transmission instead of that very sluggish and annoying automatic they have in the current MINI line-up. My GF did have a MINI Cooper SD automatic and that was awful to drive (at least IMHO).

Agreed about cabin quality, that's really below par in the R56 MINI, exterior-wise, I'm afraid I'll need some time to adapt to its funky looks.
Picking up my GF's new MINI GP later today, really looking forward to that little car.
