BMC Carbon Airbox for Ferrari 458

I have been driving my car for the last 13 months and share all of my experience from the Day I oredered my car.

Now I pulled the trigger for a little bit more power and bought BMC Carbonfiber Airbox for my italia. The design of the BMC airbox is larger than the OEM box and it also has 2 cotton conic filters instead of 1 paper panel filter. I haven't driven the car yet but will post my impressions. And now the pictures of the filters and the box:

I'll probably get ECU tuning from a German company and aiming for additional 30-35 hp (combined with the airbox) to match the Speciale power figures. Smiley

Wow - congrats for the plunge - my Porsche center told me already that when I only change the Airfilter from the 4.0 - into my 3.8 - my guarantee will be voided - and I like guarantees cheeky mail

The Turkish Ferrari vendor already voided my guarantee because I imported the car directly from Germany. BUT I have other relations with Ferrari so if there is a problem, it will be solved somehow. Besides, do you know which filter F12 uses as stock? BMC cotton. Smiley

By the way, RS 4.0 also uses BMC cotton filters as stock.

Are you sure it is a good idea to do ECU tuning on a normally aspirated car? I wouldn't do it, especially if I would track the car like you do. Not necessary, stay away from it.

The original looks so much better, can't you remove the BMC logo?

It is possible but I will not see it. Why do I bother?

    Christian,

You have valid point. I have done the same ECU software update from the same company on my E92 M3 and very satisfied with it. I had noticeable power gain on mid-range which was proven by 100-200 km/h performance box measurements.

I'm thinking of the ECU software update on my italia because of the airbox. If the stock program can cope with the additional air, I may not do it. On the other hand I also had ECU program on my father's E180 and on my ex-VW CC 1.4 TSI -from the same company- and very satisfied again.

I'll see what to do after driving my car.

On the other hand, the carbon airbox is 3.3 kg. I'll weight the stock one, too.

I have it on my CSL as well, to work in conjunction with the upgraded exhaust and cams. I've had no complaints despite use on track.

Obviously I understand the risks, and I wouldn't want to void any warranty doing it.

Totally agree, you wont feel any power difference, if you feel anything after the mods, it´s a loss of it, forget it, don´t mess with perfection Smiley

Re: BMC Carbon Airbox for Ferrari 458

I weighted the stock airbox a few days ago. It weights 4,2 kg (vs 3,3 kg of BMC)

The weight difference has no importance to me but it is good to see %30 weight difference and BMC airbox has 2 conic filters instead of 1 panel filter of OEM Box.

Sorry Onur, didn't see your question. It was done by Power Plus Engineering in Brussels. He has a very good reputation here.

The other thing to consider is the quality of fuel.  Unless you can consistently get excellent fuel in Turkey, I'd be very cautious about tuning for more power...

Oliver Neumann, the founder and the owner of Evotech Germany, regularly come to Istanbul and know the fuel quality which is 97 octane. I haven't pull the trigger yet for the software but I'm planning to do it sooner or later if I won't get a Speciale in 2 years SmileySmiley

    Frank,

I checked their site. How are they? I see that they also have software for 458.

    Hi Onur,

The company is run by Stef, I know him personally, he's a very passionate guy and an engineer. I can really recommend his services. You'd have to bring your car over to Brussels though. Smiley

Sounds like a plan.  Here the fuel is very different depending on the station, the month of the year, etc.  They always seem to vary the amount of Ethanol (gasoline has up to 10% and the E85 that I use most of the time in the Evo varies between 70 and 85%).  Need to tune in a fair amount of safety margin...

We only have the poorest quality 97 octane.
