    SciFrog:

Your conclusion is a bit illogic, but it seems that what you need is a higher power diesel engine. I thought there was one in europe...

That's why I want to try the X5 40D and even maybe the X5 M ( which is a diesel ) . After that , if I still do not like the diesels , I will have to put one  or two parts of my conclusion aside and admit that the only way to go for me is a powerful fuel engine Smiley

The higher power diesel for the RRS will only come in spring . Now there are already  2 versions .

In the US there is a 6 months wait on RRS anyway...

    Re: BMW X5 (F15) revealed

Speak of the devil ...  Looks better in M trim but still, im not convinced.

Sorry for the pic quality it was dark and I had to zoom.

    Styling wise....nothing.

The engineering must be of high standard, however.

I am getting used to the styling…. nothing great , but nothing too bad either .

If the engines are good and the back space , then I might go for it .

It will be presented at the dealer here next week with the 40D and the 50i

    Gnil:

    I want to buy  a SUV by next summer  .   in 2001 I had the 1st generation X5 and loved it ( 4.4 ) .

I tried the new RRS and came out disappointed as It felt very boring .

The Cayenne is great , but  the boot space is too small + I need the extra 3rd row + my wife does not want to drive a Porsche .

The Q7 is ugly and old now.

    The GL is too big

So…. the only one left is the X5 . I will try one soon .  I do find it also ugly , but my wife , on photos, thinks it looks good…….. So, I will see . Will drop by the dealer today .

GL63 AMG. Drove one a while ago and really liked it. It doesn't feel or drive like a Cayenne and yes, it is kind of boring (Mercedes Smiley) but the engine/exhaust sound was very nice, performance too and the car is pretty stealth. My neighbor actually thought this is a ML Smiley. Car was white and looked quite ordinary and inoffensive.

Had a GL450 4matic rental car in Miami (based on my GL63 experience, I thought it would be a good choice) but this car felt a bit too comfortable. Engine was quite nice though and it had pull, despite the size and weight.

Gnil - how far are you with your decision? We are in the same boat as you know, we also dont know whats next. Since we have been 3 weeks in US vacation I kind of felt in love with the Jeep SRT8 whenever I see one, we will test drive next week, as we do drive the new X5, lets see! Unfortunately Porsche moved the facelift to 2015, so this car is out of our list, too (just dont wait another time and I dont buy an old model).

    Re: BMW X5 (F15) revealed

Lars,  my main gas station is a Jeeps , Seat, Mazda garage . So I see the  Grand Cherokee all the time + it must be one of the most popular SUV around here at the moment as I see so many  ( more then X5 or Cayenne ) . I have not been on a test drive yet with it, as I suspect, by just looking inside, that the back row is a bit too small for 3 kids . The price is so good for what you get that maybe I should have a try anyway.

I was supposed to go tomorrow at the X5 presentation , but I can't make it . Hopefully I will be able to do a test drive next week . As per now the dealer did not know if the demo car will be the X40d or the X50i .

Let me know your impressions after your test drive .

The SRT8 is very nice, not as sporty (chassis, steering feel) as a Cayenne S or even GTS but it surely has a punch and accelerates much better. The exhaust note is also very nice. Quality look & feel isn't perfect but you get a LOT for your money (70k?). Why not, something "different". Smiley I would actually prefer it to a X5 (unless it is the M version or the 550d).

    Re: BMW X5 (F15) revealed

Looking forward to your impressions. I drove M550d X drive and was very impressed with engine/gearbox combination. But, not with handling...

    Re: BMW X5 (F15) revealed

I will testdrive the X5 M50d next Friday. The interior is charming the exterior rather boring. I prefer the dynamic line over the M-Sport, unfortunately you cant get the 50d in that line (I just cant see that M-package anymore - same look since years on any car).

    Re: BMW X5 (F15) revealed

I just realized that the M50d can't be configured with the 3rd rows of seats . At least it did not let me do it on Configurator. That would probably be a no go for me . I would then have to go for the 40d , but it seems it has been delayed ?? Or the 50i …. but not sure that is good with this car ?? I have high hopes on the BMW diesel engine ….. but until today, I have most of the time been disappointed by the diesel engines . Only one that felt ok, was in a MB S

    Re: BMW X5 (F15) revealed

Gnil, I drive a X6 40d for quite a while now and i am very happy with the engine - transmission combination.  I drove a 50d only briefly but was not impressed. The small difference in perrformance in no way justifies the enourmous premium imo. They will have to do better with an improved version with more Hp and or bigger engine.

I often drive to the Engadin area in Summer and Winter, fully loaded in the X 6. The only non sportscars which can pass me are the cayenne turbos, otherwise the tourque of the X6 is so ample that you really have enough grunt to overtake other cars easily or make sure that u cant be overtaken. Obviously it lacks revving capability being a diesel. And in winter on the Julier in heavy snow a 911 4s was just not able to pull away from the X6, traction is really good.

So i would consider the 40d for the diesel or otherwise just get a petrol version (50 or M), then you'll feel the difference. On a sidenote, this summer we drove from Zurich to Tuscany for two weeks and back, two adults and two kids fully loaded with 4 four bikes on the hook (thule bikerack) and the average consumption was 10,7 liters for 100km! Pretty amazing...

    Re: BMW X5 (F15) revealed

I find it incredibly bland.  They should have modernized the interior and stuck with previous  exterior.

    Re: BMW X5 (F15) revealed

    turbolite :

I have two brochure of the new X5 . In the first one they explain all the models .

    The M is the M50d : HP 381,  Nm 740

    The 40d : HP 313 , Nm 630

So, there is quite a difference, no ?  where those the specs of the one you tried ? I would be very happy  not to ' have to go ' with the M50d  , but I will also need an engine that is pleasurable to drive .

The lack of revving is what worries me . When I tried last months the RRS diesel, I was very disappointed as it was so boring with that diesel engine . I get frustrated when I can't go into higher revs . But I hope that with a good transmission this will not be the case and that I will be able to have enough fun driving on the torque .

The other brochure I have is the one with the specs and the price ( just got it saturday ) . The X40d is not on the list Smiley   And also my dealer was supposed to get the 40d for test driving and instead he got the M50d . So, I don't know if that one have been postponed ???

Looking at this brochure it seems you can have the 3rd town on the M50d . So, I will see .

I am also heading to the Engadine this winter … but it will not be with the new car unfortunately …

I am not sure I want to put up with the 16 - 20  litre ( real life ) consumption of the 50i even if  I know this would be my favorite engine ….. I have to really think about it .

Your feed back is very appreciated. Thanks

    Re: BMW X5 (F15) revealed

    Couple of thoughts:

my x6 actually has 306hp and 600 nm, so the version in the new x5 habe been slightly improved.  The data for th 50 d are unchanged. From 0-100 the bigger engine is 1 second faster, which is quite something.

But in real life the difference does not feel that big at all. I believe it is because of the characteristics of the engines, which are quite similar. They both peak power  at 4000 rpm, so the third turbo does not make this a revvier engine (that was my hope). I pushes some 100nm more but that is difficult to feel. When u overtake on the julier and put down the throttle both engines repond (after a short lag) and push hard rightaway. Both engines will lack in revving capacity which unfortunately is typical for all diesel.  The 50d will take you a bit further than the 40d but as i said it's not that much.

If you really want to keep pulling after the 2nd car you overtook you need the 50i! Now with 450'hp it must be really fast. I also think that the consumption is not going to be overly high because of the tall 8th gear which in Switzerland will keep consumption down on highways quite a bit (get ACC). I think that 14-15 liters are realistic, not more than that. Still that is 4 liters more than the diesels.

So if money is not an issue i would get the 50i, then the 50 d and lastly the 40 d. if money is an argument, go with the 40 d which will still have very good performance at a decent price.  These SUVs dont become sportscars anyway, no matter how much horsepower you put into them!

    hope this helps...

    Re: BMW X5 (F15) revealed

I drive a 750d and used to have a 740d before. Two feelings - the 750d is much more loud and not as pleasant as the 740d. The extra power you feel on the highway above 150 km/h. The extra power I hardly can feel in the city. I had a 730d courtesy car recently and even that was not that bad on lower speeds and much more comfortable regarding noise (guess you can hear every extra Turbo 730d-1, 740d-2, 750d-3).

I guess as the the Diesel always have a huge toque you cant sense the torque difference that much. While the horsepower you feel on higher speeds as it just pulls stronger - but for the "fun part" in velocity and kick you cant sense it that much different.

Would I go again for the 50d - probably not.

    Re: BMW X5 (F15) revealed

I test drove the X5 M50d this afternoon . Conditions very not great . Light rain, wet and slippery roads, 5 degrees.

So, this is just a few thought after the drive. No detailed test.

This car was much nicer to drive then the RRS diesel I tried a few weeks back . It felt much more alive .

I will not comment the look… it's just a small change from the last one, nothing exiting .

The M chassis was a pleasure . It stayed nearly flat around corners, even when comfort mode was selected . In sports mode, or sports + the steering got stiffer , as did the suspension . With all modes it handled good enough for me for a ' family car ' .  Power was enough until 140 km/h or so …. or to pass one car . Long accelerations lacked the rev a petrol engine can give .

    Fuel consumption was 14l  / 100km… for a one hour drive ….

There was a gimmick that was ridiculous ….. the sound of a V8 coming out of the front speakers mail  I rather have the horrible sound , but real, of the diesel then a tune played to mimick a petrol engine ….

    here a few pics .

    Re: BMW X5 (F15) revealed

I love the ///M badge and its origins. One of the iconic automotive logos. It should be more preserved though, in order to indicate something very special like the original E30 M3 and the M1.

This will not be ' my ' car, but more my wife's ( to complete the Mini JCW ) . We have 3 boys that we need to transport …. + all the stuff that goes with it ( friends, luggage, bikes, scooters , skis , etc…… )

Even a SUV, I find too small for the middle seat and the trunk . I will not say what we are using now Smiley….. but it fits much more then any SUV .

    Re: BMW X5 (F15) revealed

Deep in my heart I'm still a X5 lover. Hence I could imagine to buy the M X5 instead of the 50d (what a confusing lettering). The consumption with 14 l/100 km is way to much for this Diesel. I  testdrived  a  550d a couple of months ago with an consumption of 17 l/100 km. No kidding. My former M X5 just need 18 l but with 555hp.

My driving was only fast accelerations followed by braking , followed by another acceleration . etc…  on country roads.  Yes, it is high, but I don't think it can be any higher .

Believe me it can be higher. With the 550d I drove on the Autobahn between 180-200 kph. It consumed 17 l. After this I returned the car to the dealer and bought the GC 650iX with 13 l /100 km. It was the better choice for me.

    Re: BMW X5 (F15) revealed

If I take an X5, I would get the 40d. It seems indeed the best  for the purpose that car will have . I was  disappointed by the trunk space. It is not that big , much smaller then the RRS for example .   I configutated a pretty loaded car with the dealer .  Price wise I do not get far from the 50d .

What about these options , are they must have ?

    The Harman/Kardon speakers ?

    The head up display ?

And how much discount can I expect ? The first offer from the dealer was 9 % .
