    Re: McLaren P1 - Official

    bhnyc:

pretty sick, I still keep thinking about - what if they made this a three seat configuration.  I think it would have played to Mclaren heritage and have sold out right away.

Maybe development costs would have been prohibitive, but I don't think that would have been the case.  I think the development of a new tub, in today's computer world, would have been much easier than it was in the 90's.  The rest is mostly layout issues.

For sure. 3 seater with center position would have sold out instantly imo. I guess it just wasn't in the cards though since they wanted to have the same tub for the 12C. If McLaren is successful, it is possible we see another 3 seater eventually.

    Re: McLaren P1 - Official

I would have bought the 3 seater McLaren over the 918 for sure.

The 2 seat configuration of the P1 is the biggest financial mistake they ever made.

No matter how good the P1 will be, it will still not be consider a successor of the F1, but an evolution of the MP4-12C.

    Re: McLaren P1 - Official

Maybe that is exactly what they have planed...sell P1 as the new F1 then later sell proper F1 replacement,V12 and 3 seats...

I don't think so, Ron Dennis was interviewed at the beginning of the P1 development process and was very defensive (aggressive) in stating that the current F1 owners felt the 3 seat position was not comfortable and did not want to see that configuration in this car.  As Whoopsy said, this sounds more like a justification than anything else.

I read somewhere that the P1 had non-oficial time of.....6.33

Just to remember that 6:48 is the record time frown

    Re: McLaren P1 - Official

Just saw a carbon and pearl white P1. The car is stunning. Just so unbelievably cool. Just like the 12C, pictures don't do this car justice. I don't think I can really add or say anything that hasn't been said on here before, but yeah... wow. I'm officially jealous of you future owners out there. The 12C is the best performance car I've ever owned or driven. 12C performance in a P1 design would be perfection. So what does that make a car with the P1 design and performance that even demolishes a 12C? I can't even imagine how awesome that must be.

Oh, and I had heard good things about McLaren hospitality and factory visits etc. Um, yeah, it's on another level than anything I've ever experienced from any company, ever  I'm not the press, nor am I on anyone's radar. No one is probably ever going to be sending me LF. 918, or P1 invites, yet here I am with my friend, still wearing our gym clothes, getting up close and personal with the car, being led around and presented with all it's awesomeness and design elements. It was really great for us to be able to experience it on such short notice. Greatly appreciated.

There was some press there, so I'm sure the pictures of this car/event will make their way around, but I'll see if I can get some when I go back tonight.

    Hi all.

Not a plug per se but just thought I'd let you know that the first two production P1's off the production line ended up at Paintshield having paint protection installed earlier this week.  They look amazing in the flesh.

I can truly say that the interior of the 918 Spyder is better than the interior of the P1

The same guy has a 918 on order apparently. kiss

    Re: McLaren P1 - Official

I thought black was going to be the best color for this car but after watching that video I realise I was all wrong. So much of the drama and the details of the bodywork are lost in black. a Bright colour is definitely more suiting for the wat the carbon and the body panels are designed. I'm thinking it would look amazing in a bright metallic blue.

Also, loving the sounds this thing makes.

    Re: McLaren P1 - Official

thought the same - also the sound for a turbo is amazing....

    Re: McLaren P1 - Official

No noise restrictions for limited production cars, I think.

McLaren with their miniscule volumes apparently can do whatever they like with the dBs, which excellent for the noise fetihists.

This is actually a huge problem for manufacturers like Porsche. People always compare Porsche cars to Ferrari, Lamborghini and McLaren and they ask themselves why Porsche can't put louder/better sounding cars on the street but truth is, the EU legislation is to blame for it. Larger manufacturers (above 7000 cars per year or so, I'm not sure) are required to fulfill certain sound emissions limitations. Not easy for a big player like Porsche.

How did Porsche manage to homologate the 991's PSE or the 991 GT3's exhaust?

Sound cutoff at certain speeds and rev figures, adapted to EU regulations. Not that easy with a turbo charged engine I'm afraid.

    Re: McLaren P1 - Official

Remember that Ferrari's LdM declared a 7.000 units production limit. I think this figure is the cut-off point not only for noise but for emission limitations too.

It wouldn't make financial sense for Ferrari to invest in the relevant emissions technology or be forced to quieten their noisy cars, in order to sell a few hundreds of units more.

Why Ferrari cannot be averaged with FIAT and Porsche with VW, as far as these regulations are concerned? I don't know, but I suppose it must somehow have to do with how these Regulations are written and/or  with the structures of the respective shareholdings

I'm still not sure if the 7000 number limitation is right (by EU standards) but there is a certain number which seems to allow smaller manufacturers to produce cars which are noisier and less environmental friendly. This is of course a huge advantage for manufacturers like Ferrari, McLaren or even Lamborghini but in the end, I'm not sure if these exceptions will be kept by the EU for eternity if you get my point.

Impressive! Actually this really looked like a sub-7min lap, rather than the more clinical 918 footage. Anyone who's tried to lap the Nordschleife in sub-8mins will confess that's it's a properly hairy experience, so I would think a sub-7min lap would appear extreme even on video. In the P1-footage it does, in the 918-vid, it doesn't.
