    Re: F Type... or.....???

After dropping off my 991S for service got the keys to a F-Type V8S.  It's completely dominated by the engine.  Hitting the exhaust button made it the loudest car I think I've ever been in, including some 442 Chevelles and a 66 389 GTO.  Course the Chevelles were from back when I was a teenager so maybe I'm just getting old...Engine response is good, torque is noticeable for sure.

Biggest let down was the gear box, coming from PDK the downshifts reminded me of an old tiptronic box.  Interior was pretty nice, but as most people have posted it's overpriced.  Perfect weather and at times the car struggled for grip; guessing one needs a big tire budget if driving it hard.  Handling was okay, ride was pretty good, body control not the best.  Got a lot of attention in it, but I think that was primarily the noise coming from it.

Interestingly the car I drove is one the owner of the dealership has leased, but he rarely if ever drives it.  What does he drive all the time?  A new Cayman.

It's a pretty car, the back seems a bit awkward to me from a rear 3/4 view, but it's nice.  It would be a good used car a couple years down the road, but no way would I replace my 991S with one.  Oh and the 'carbon fiber' wheel accents are kinda ridiculous.

    Re: F Type... or.....???

Thanks for the short review. Sounds exactly like the experience I made. kiss The exhaust sound is really nice but like you said, maybe a bit too loud for certain regions/situations.

It will be a good offer used...down the road...maybe in a year or two but for this kind of money, no way.

Think the coupe will be a lot better looking than the convertible.

..but just as pointless. I wonder if they'll get away with the boxster\cayman price structure?

    Re: F Type... or.....???

The cabrio is ok looking but very anonymous IMO. The coupe might be a more characterful design. However, the real test is how it will drive. Some dynamic weaknesses might be overlooked in the case of a cabrio but not in the case of a fixed roof model. Cabrio drivers are different and more lenient.

    Re: F Type... or.....???

I would never consider the F-type Coupe but I could imagine getting the F-type roadster, I really like this car. It may not be the best handling car out there but it sounds nice, it looks nice and I consider it a fun car. A bit on the expensive side though.

My local Jaguar dealer still has his used V8 S test car for sale (100k) and he offers some special lease offers for the V6 and regular V8. Overall interesting offers but no real bargains. For 80k EUR, the V8S could be an interesting car though.

    Re: F Type... or.....???

I agree on the looks , to me this car is a huge design hit. Very good looking.

Yes the competition eats it up but I just don't consider it to be a performance competitor. This car is for people who want a good looking car that can take them from A to B and doesn't necesarily have to cover the bases the way more performance focused car does.

    Re: F Type... or.....???

There are alternatives that do both. A to B plus dynamics. Why go for Jaguar?

Moreover, the front grille of the F is a styling mistake. They should have continued with the E type oval that suits a sportscar (even a rather lame one) better, instead of sticking this disproportional grille borrowed from their limousines.

I do not see many alternatives for that kind of (low) money. The V8S sounds amazing and the car looks really good (incl. the interior). I could imagine getting a used one with maximum 10k km for 80k EUR (new price tag over here is 120k EUR) but not more. To be honest, I wouldn't know anything comparable, the Boxster S doesn't have such a nice sounding V8 (neither the luxurious interior) and what would be left else in that price category? Smiley A used 991 Carrera S Cab would cost at least 100k EUR with the same mileage.

I would go for the Mercedes SL V8. A splendid luxury convertible that has been defining the class for ages.

Also, a  perfect wife's car since the days of "Dallas".Smiley

However, the Boxster S is still the sporting driver's choice and it shouldn't be looked down upon just because of the 911.

Trust me, if you are under 60, you don't really want to drive a Mercedes SL, at least not in Germany. Smiley

I would put the SL in the late 40s upwards age group for men, provided they are indifferent drivers and for women in the 40+ group.

Why this prejudice in Germany Smiley

    Re: F Type... or.....???

I really like the R231 SL.

Great deals available in the UK at the moment; as there are very few at the moment.

A new to your spec (sensible) SL500 can be had for around £1000 per month, no deposit, on a 36 month, 10,000 miles a year deal. The R231 SL500 is as fast as the R230 SL55!

The R231 is also about 300kgs lighter than the equivalent BMW 650i convertible.
