Sporty optioned Boxster S or naked Cayman S?

    Hello please help me decide,

Would you rather go with :
    Boxster S with
PASM, 19" rims, FullLeather, SportSeats, Xenon, SportChrono, SportSteering Wheel

    or Cayman S with
    Xenon?

Re: Sporty optioned Boxster S or naked Cayman S?

the questions is do you care for the convertible or not? Both are great cars... though my cayman is an 18" no PASM.. Xenon are a must ;-)

Re: Sporty optioned Boxster S or naked Cayman S?

I'd go Cayman for the performance. Then again I'm a guy who is looking to buy an Ariel Atom

Personally, the sporty options I'd choose from your list would be sport chrono, sport steering wheel, sport seats, and I'd add a sport shifter.

Xenons are cool! But unless you are driving alot at night in areas where lighting is less than ideal, Xenons are not absolutley necessary. I live in So. California; I could see just fine driving with my lights off, so it's purely a cool factor for me. Halogens are just fine if you live in a populated area IMHO.

If you're buying the P-car primarily based on performance, I say Cayman S all the way. Plus the Cayman is absolutely STUNNING to look at. I think it looks better than the Boxster.

But if you can't live w/o the style factor, and need to have the coolness the convertible offers go Boxster. Best of luck choosing; it will be a happy result either way!

Re: Sporty optioned Boxster S or naked Cayman S?

At the end I picked the Boxster S since I am not a die hard drifter or street racer, to cruise around town with the top down is just soooo cool...

    FYI my 987S got
Artic Silver with terra cotta + cocoa top
standard 18 rims (gonna change to something else after delivery)
    PASM
    Bose
    sports steering wheel
    Xenon
    parktronic
    electric seats
    wind deflector

    Goodluck!

Re: Sporty optioned Boxster S or naked Cayman S?

basically you have the choice between a nice car to cruise around in that is very sporty

or a VERY sporty car that will be VERY fun and fast around the track.

the me from 2 years ago would have chosen the boxster, but now i would choose a barebones car over a fully optioned GT anyday if the choice didn't matter.

after i get a DB9 next year for time in london, im going to buy something REALLY hardcore, like, rattle-your-bones hardcore for trackdays and occasional moorlands blasts.

Re: Sporty optioned Boxster S or naked Cayman S?

This is the exact choice I'm facing. Add a sport shifter, and it's the Cayman for me, not for the extra performance (oddly) but because I like the buttoned-up character of a coupe. If you like top down, though, I think the choice would be opposite. That's a very tasty Boxster you've spec'd.

Re: Sporty optioned Boxster S or naked Cayman S?

I would take a used 997 carrera with xenon, 19" and sport chrono.

    I 2nd that

Re: Sporty optioned Boxster S or naked Cayman S?

    Thx for the replies.
I should have said that I prefer the looks of the Cayman. It looks more "male"...I hope I didnt hurt anyone's feelings by saying this.
I like the idea of a coupe... but I am still struggling with the decision whether to buy sport seats in the Cayman or not. Sport seats would cost a lot, but I'm not sure if it is a no brainer to choose sport seats in such a sporty car (after all it is sportier than the boxster) or not.
But if I take the sport seats, then I would also have to take full leather, since it looks a bit awkward to have full leather shiny seats, and the rest is in plastic, no?

Can I retrofit the sportseats by any chance though? And how much would that cost?

    What are your opinions?

I'd go check out the sport seats to see what you think. I think that they look cool, but I'm a little too big for them. Only way to know is to check them out. I wouldn't skimp on the seats. Afterall, that's where you're going to spend your time in it.

Re: Sporty optioned Boxster S or naked Cayman S?

Going for the sport seats without full-leather is no problem at all. Looks very good, especially if you select dark interiour colours. I had black interiour in my 987 boxster without full leather but with sport seats and it looked very good and I never regret not getting full leather... In my current 997s I have full leather and it's great but since I have black it's not a MUST have in my opinion...

Re the selection between Cayman and Boxster I totally agree with others in here that its really up to if you can't live without the top-down driving. Also remember that the boxster is a bit confined when you have the top up. It's really a small back-window and you don't have the smaller windows either that you have in the Cayman....

So.. conclution.. if you will drive ALOT with the top down.. then go for the boxster... but if you just lower the roof now and then.. I would recommend the cayman since it's "lighter" inside because of the bigger windows all around!... that's just my 2 cents

good luck with your selection and you will for sure be happy either way!!

ps. the short shifter is GREAT.. I have it in my 997 and I assume that it's the same box in the 987 variants... its stunning with the short throws

Re: Sporty optioned Boxster S or naked Cayman S?

As long as you have Bose and a Sports Steering wheel you cant go wrong on either. PCM would be nice though.

Here in the UK you wouldn't get a used 997, even a non -"S" for the price of a well equipped new Cayman, let alone a Boxster. Boxster or Cayman? I've had a Boxster, now I wouldn't mind a Cayman, to experience the better engine in lieu of the wind in the hair (if I had any) option of the Boxster.

With regard to what options I would do without on a more basic Cayman. 18" wheels and no PASM in lieu of 19" wheels and PASM would be a possibility, guards red instead of metallic paint, I wouldn't bother with auto-climate, maybe do without Bose which I don't listen to very much, but I like the ambience of full leather, I like PCM + nav, sports seats, and sports steering wheel, bi-xenon ( a must), and with the new PCM capable of reading MP3 I would drop the 6 x CD player.

Re: Sporty optioned Boxster S or naked Cayman S?

I test drove both the 987s and the Cayman S. Hmmh. not sure you can make that much of a difference on the engine alone. So the 'better engine experience'....
And for handling, on open roads? feeling the difference?
Boxster S or 997 for me.

Re: Sporty optioned Boxster S or naked Cayman S?

Its got to come down to a choice between coupe and convertible.....otherwise they are fairly close. A Cayman with no options is still a very nice car....options are nice, but not everything.

As far as performance?.....I could tell the difference the first mile in the Cayman.....the engine loves to rev and has a fair amount more down low making it more fun to drive around town IMO. The coupe structure can't be beat for handling either.

Re: Sporty optioned Boxster S or naked Cayman S?

Don't expect to be the Boxster S to be a cruiser - it is not much slower than the Cayman! The car received very high grades in the recent SportAuto test!

If you appreciate the open top on the Boxster - and I warn you, don't decide unless you have seen the first rays of sun - it should be a no-brainer. If you travel a lot and use your car as a daily-driver, the fixed roof might have its edge.

You can't go wrong with both decisions, those are two great choices.

I can only speak for the situation in Germany, but around here the 997 models indeed look financially interesting - slightly used 997 / 997 S vs. Cayman S isn't a big financial difference.
I would take the Xenon headlights around here since your presence in other people's rearview mirrors is definately different - at least on the Autobahn!

Re: Sporty optioned Boxster S or naked Cayman S?

    Get a used 997 instead...

Re: Sporty optioned Boxster S or naked Cayman S?

get a boxster s with little options.... IMO the boxster is a better value for money

Re: Sporty optioned Boxster S or naked Cayman S?

    Moonstone,

Everyone here has their own reasons and hence their own biases for their suggestions, including the "used 997" option that wasn't even on your list.

    The best advice:
Ask your dealer to loan you a Boxster S for a few hours (on a nice day so you can put the top down) and then a Cayman S for a few hours so you can decide which YOU prefer.

We all go through this process of asking others opinons, but I think once you've had adequate time in both vehicles, the answer that is right for you will be very clear. I mean, all these people that responded know exactly what they want!

I agree. You'll have a much better idea once you have spent some time with both of them. They are both fantastic cars.
