Finally said it? I said it a few days ago - okay so I guessed it...

So it shifts really fast? How many times could I shift a manual in four weeks? What are odds of a car with a manual needing a tow due to a faulty transmission? Even when my shift cable broke I was able to drive it home and then to the shop. Same with a clutch cable failure I had in a '77 911 as a teenager - I drove it home.

Just love all the new tech! Perhaps the delay is to install manual boxes instead? One can only wish...

Can't wait until these cars have 10 years on them. Will they still turn a wheel? My sad guess is that they are now building cars for guys like RC who lease them for a few years after which they are expected to fail so a new one needs to replace it.

When you mentioned the 77 911 I couldn't help but laugh. My father's '77 2.7L engine was a total POS. Leaked major oil after only 5K miles. EGR and thermal reactors caused the case studs to gush oil. Never got it fixed right. Well known gremlin nowadays.There was no internet back then, no cadre of owners to rally lawyers for a class action lawsuit, no high tech alphabet soup gizmos, just a one year 12K mi warranty, parts that most often had to come from Germany in weeks (no FedEx), and Porsche-Audi dealers who sold Porsches but didn't quite know how to service those simple, basic, no-nonsense Porsches. Yep the good old days.

...by contrast, my father bought a Le Mans edition 924. 2.5l engine brand new in 1988. Never serviced it - never changed the oil. (don't ask!) brake pads replaced at local garage - never replaced the brake fluid. He stopped using it at 120,000 miles when the seat springs poking through the seat made it too uncomfortable. It sat outside for 15 years as the tyres went flat and bits generally fell off.

2 years ago, he decided to chuck it on ebay sold strictly as seen. The winning bidder turned up with new battery and pumped the tyres up and drove it onto a low loader. DVLA records show it's back on the road!!

That '77 was the only 911 that I ever had to rebuild the engine on (that leaves six high mileage examples trouble free over 30+ years!). Mind you the '77 was not that old back then - even back in the early 80's we all knew the '73S was the 911 to own! Thank god the 3.2 Carrera came out in '83/'84.

So true. Now I could take that 77 2.7L and change the studs to inserts, add a pop off valve (my father blew the air box twice, never had that problem, or the oil leaks on his 73 2.4L T), the 3.2L hydraulic chain tensioners, and a few other mods from later eras and that 2.7 would now be a gem. But back then, a couple of years after buying new, the car was a nightmare and there was no real support available. It was expected that the owner just suck in his gut, open his wallet, and fix it or sell it, whichever cost less and was the easier of the two.

well..we are all humans - we all make mistakes..although less and less.

Nevertheless, you all seem to agree that the issue was with the gearbox..I have heard something else..but if the majority agrees..I wont put in new arguments here..

@RC: sure that its just the PdK? ..why did you then make such a big deal out of it...? Its clear that the PdK wouldnt be Porsches mistake..thus no need to make such a drama out of it..Porsche should inform cutomers ("we are currently working on a solution for the Gearbox.."..and "problem solved"..

My dealer told me yesterday my car was moved from 12th of october to 24th (completion at plant, not delivery) but I do have an axle lift.

Great news. So the information was right, glad to hear that.

The axle lift is a MUST HAVE option, those who have ordered it without it will regret it if they use the car on a daily basis. You are very lucky.

I see it differently. Unless you have daily situations like steep driveway or funky garage floor the need for one is very dubious. You cannot anticipate every uneven street or highway unless you are travel over the same roads everyday. Even then with without a lifter you are going to be scrapping your front end. it is a characteristic of a high performance sport car.

One must be to be mindful and careful so as not to do severe damage whether you have a FL or not.

i agree Nick,

I didnt order the lift - just adds weight and complexity. I've been angling low ferraris and porsches over things for years. the lift is just another modern complexity you never needed until it appeared

The lift works quite well but to each his own I guess. The added weight is minimal and it saves you from a lot of (possible) drama.

The lifters on the 997 have had several problems which are documented on various car sites. Hopefully, Porsche has corrected the problems in the 991's.

BTW, does your TTS have a lifter?

Im the same - no lifter. Apart from the weight and the fact these items tend to cause issues with age (for 2nd and 3rd owners I guess probably not me) Ive been driving lower cars than this for years and learnt just to take a bit of care. The crux really came when I spoke with two local 7.2GT3RS owners with them fitted. One never remembered to use it after it was repaired for the second time he stopped using it, the second said he still had to replace the lip as it still got damaged even with the lifter. He had also had issues with it under warranty.

Apart from the weight and complexity issues has anyone noticed that in the static and moving press/journalist shots the cars that look lower at the front seem to be the non lift cars tested? Its funny because the initial press shots (white car at race track) the height profile looked awesome. I think its been photoshopped. I doubt the car turned a wheel in most of these pictures. Then I started to compare pictures across articles. It wasnt conclusive but it seemed to me the cars that sat lower at the front when static were the ones where the dsh shots showed no front lift option. Could have easily been an empty gas tank creating the illusion too so not prize there!

The 991 GT3 seems in photos where it has sat next to the 997.2 gt3 to have fractionally more ground clearance in any case. The area I think thats going to get damaged are the black PU air scoops thats sit forward of the front wheels. They look like a silly design being so low. Hopefully they are rubber. In any case a front lift kit wont save them as they are too far back.....just my 2c worth....

Watt. 90L tank not available for RHD markets. See attached from factory order book. You will not see any RHD country code here.

No such thing ever. 90L was offered since 964 in Euro LHD countries, now for first time in LHD ROW countries but not yet in RHD countries. Of course maybe its now available from a particular production date....

Andreas told me (at Goodwood) that it was simply because low production numbers wouldn't justify the tooling costs etc.
