If you knew you were going to be in a three way pissing match why would you put your ultimate best time forward to start things off? This will be hard enough to break...

And I agree with Woopsy, he lost at least a second or so on that last straight with no battery power.

Precisely! To think that Lieb was holding back with Sport Auto as an objective observer to verify the time is total nonsense. Tell me the last time any driver has said after a record breaking run that is the best he can do? Factor in that the 918 desperately needs a marketing boost to sell the remaining 450 or so units you can understand his statements.

I remain mystified by the bang or pop that occurs at the 49 second mark in the video you posted.  Notice that after the pop, flames appear under the car, almost as if a waste gate was activated; however, the V8 is normally aspirated and the exhaust is routed to the upper section of the engine cover.  This raises the question: Has Porsche released all the details of the technologies embodied in the 918?

My guess was a misfire, or he popped a gasket or something. Just a wild guess. Could also be a rocket motor Smiley

    Re: OFFICIAL: 918 Spyder

The 918 Ring time was obtained with a flying start rather than a standing start. Was the CGT's official ring time obtained the same way?

    Re: OFFICIAL: 918 Spyder

All bridge to gantry times are flying starts, clock starts when car passes the bridge and stops when they hit the gantry.

I located a ghost image of the 918 indicating the exhaust system for the V8.  According to that picture, and I'm not sure it is accurate or a Porsche provided graphic, the exhaust system routes forward with the silencers mounted up and near the cabin rear bulkhead.  In that diagram, there is no indication of a tubular header system, but what appears a wrapped or covered exhaust manifold.  Also consider that the 918 probably has a flat panel covering the engine for aerodynamic purposes, forming the ducts for the rear diffuser.

Based on the comments above, and reviewing the video footage several times, the flame propagation does suggest that it was purposeful venting of exhaust gases.  So I return to my original comment on why a device that seems to function like a wastegate on a naturally aspirated engine?

The biggest challange was street legal tyres. On semislicks car makes 6-48.

What do you mean by semi slicks tyres?

The car runs on Michelin Sport pilot cup 2 which, to me, are semi slicks.

I agree, a Cup2 should be a semi-slick tyre, but looking at its profile it looks much more conventionally threaded than a regular Cup. Smiley

That's correct, however I would assume that 6'57" is not a BTG-time, but a full flying lap.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 918 Spyder

The used semi-slicks are streetlegal but I guess kudryavchik means slicks, which wouldn't be street legal.

The achieved factory time sounds great and it is a great record for Porsche but I am more interested in the Sport Auto track time since it is more "usable" in real life. Same goes to the 991 Turbo S.

I also think that the 918 still has great potential regarding chassis and maybe even tire setups but Porsche was (and probably still is) under a lot of pressure to deliver the first car(s), so I don't think we have seen the end of it performance-wise.

And also better batteries, because Porsche plans to support the car with battery updates.

Porsche 918 semislicks are e rated. 6-48 for non e rated tyres.

Are there names for the different colours?
I guess the liquid colours are #7 and #8, but what's the difference between black #3 and black #5 and is #9 GT-silver, #13agate and #14 rhodium? Smiley

Dark grey looks great, so do the blues. Then again, the black looks good with the green accents.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 918 Spyder

Saw the link popped up on my FB page and cross pasted it over here, I didn't actually checkout all the pictures.

    Until now.

Hate it when pictures can't convey how a colour actually looks like, especially some of the more exotic paint colours.

The cobalt blue is pretty much butchered, it looks no where close to that cartoonish in real life. Dark Blue metallic is also darker in real life.

And they made a big difference between meteor grey and liquid metal when in actually paint sample they are maybe a shade or 2 difference.

Then there are the 3 blacks, haha. One is matte black wrap, one is straight black and one is basalt metallic, but the pictures hardly made a difference.

@Christian: I agree that shade of grey looks really good on the 918, too bad the meteor grey is lighter than that in real life.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 918 Spyder

I would order one in Liquid Silver (best civil colour) and one in the Salzburg colours  (best battle livery) with the Weissach Package, as I cannot make my mind up.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 918 Spyder

I just changed my mind about the liquid metal colour :)

I finally gets it. While silver/grey shade is not my cup of tea, I dig up all the pictures and re-check my memory of the sample I saw, I can finally tell the difference.

While all shades of silver/grey from Porsche do get lighter the more light shines on it, the liquid metal has a steeper slope, i.e., it gets more and more reflective a lot quicker than normal paint. The key to my finding was the IAA pictures on the GCF. The shaded area looks normal but the lighted area is a lot shinier than normal. It just reflects more light.

I saw the samples indoor, not enough light to show off the super reflective property, that's why it looks almost the same as meteor grey, but in direct sunlight it will be a lot lighter than meteor.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 918 Spyder

I have seen the liquid metal colors on the sample plates, so not the same as on the car. It looks good, rather like the T-1000 Terminator in T2. When asked why it was so expensive, we were told that it's a very time-consuming, complex 16 step process to create the liquid metal look. My first thought after hearing that was any repairs to the paint will have to be made by the factory, I can't see even a very good normal body shop handling it. Maybe they're train one shop in each region?
