    Re: BMW i8

BMW missed the opportunity to make a great sportscar while they had those V8 and V10 M engines, this thing...is not interesting to a sportscar buyer

    Re: BMW i8

And the price is ridiculous: 200.000€.  For a 362hp car with a three cylinder engine and some electric stuff. What are they smoking there?

They should double it: 400.000€.  For a 724hp car with a six cylinder engine. Then they would be on to something. Smiley

Sure it is that much? Thought it was more like €120.000,- Smiley

    Re: BMW i8

    It's € 126.000,- in Germany

Even if it's "only" 126k (what means 150k when it will be delivered), I fear we have to get used to such specs in the future. Smiley

    Re: BMW i8

I personally think that BMW should have made a seperate brand for the i-series. Especially the i3 doesn't fit in the BMW brand IMO. If they created a seperate, modern, youthfull brand, it would have been beter. Like Daimler-Benz did with Smart, but just a little bit smarter ;)

Regarding the i8, not as hideous as the i3, but still ugly. Especially the back of the car. Looks almost as bad as the C7...

    Re: BMW i8

BMW are losing it big time IMO, Although they still make some good cars, they have nothing desirable.

As far as premium mainstream brands are concerned, I think that Audi is the  "the new BMW".

Agreed, or maybe market the i3 as a MINI, it has nothing to do with being a BMW IMO.

i8 doesn't trigger my interest one bit, and I doubt anyone is waiting for it.

Ah, but that is the point - BMW is saying this has everything to do with FUTURE cars fron BMW - that this is just the pioneer of tech that we all will be buying on all of their lines.  If they are in fact serious in this direction, then it was correct to leave these cars as part of the normal BMW lineup.

I'm afraid so. Actually I think that at some point, going high performance electric will be "chique" in Europe, "green chique" but I still have hopes that VW Group for example will choose hybrids for sports cars and full electric for other cars (like city cars, etc.). BMW is pretty curageous here but they could also initiate a trend to a line of full electric sports cars, which could seriously hurt (image-wise) high performance petrol cars and put manufacturers AND buyers under such pressure that they have to accept more green technology, very likely to their disadvantage (prices, performance, higher weight, etc.).

    Re: BMW i8

The whole hybrid thing is only a step. It is a bad compromise for weight and complexity. Once you can do 500 miles with batteries that you can recharge in 20 minutes, who will need a combustion engine? Tesla is almost there...

    Re: BMW i8

It will be really interesting how many of these ugly 3-Cylinder things BMW will sell for the price of a 911. I do not know a single petrolhead who likes this car. Maybe it attracts new customers who didn't buy sports cars until now.

    Re: BMW i8

Induce enough celebrities and it'll sell. (just like the Prius & Tesla Lotus thingy did) Yawn - of no interest to me but perhaps it's a generation thing?

I still think that in the sports car segment, hybrids have a better chance of having success...for now. Electric cars suck regarding high speed performance and it won't change too fast. I know this may not be important for the US or other speed limited countries but still...

The i8 doesn't tick my boxes a bit. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. Which is quite strange for a car nut like me. Not sure if BMW did the right thing here but they are certainly (trying) to send a message of innovation and courage. Not sure if it is going to pay off though.

Same here. That thing generates no must-have-reflex. I remember when I first sat in the Z8, saw the beautiful interior und listened to the 5Liter V8. I desperately wanted one. What has happened to BMW?

    Re: BMW i8

Yes...the Z8. I see one from time to time and still want one (not so much after I look at the used car prices over here).

Not sure what happened to BMW but I kind of get the feeling that they maneuvered themselves into a corner with the "i" models. Mercedes already works with Tesla together and I wouldn't be surprised to see some bad ass surprises from the VW Group (Piech is not dumb!) sooner or later, maybe even with the help of Tesla and/or others.

The i3 is an interesting concept (way a bit too pricey but it could work) but the i8 I don't get at all. Unless someone wants to prove and show off his "green" soul publicly, which would make sense for someone very rich who would probably have another half a dozen of cars with petrol engines in his garage.

     Shit I see it too.

    Re: BMW i8

Per usual, it doesn't live up to the concept.

It's kind of cool, but nothing terrible memorable in my opinion. Nice interior, and I gotta admit from the side, in black in this render/picture it's nice looking.

I'm not sure the price/performance is that impressive though.

    Re: BMW i8

It's sexy in dark color in videos too. I'd love glass doors, but that's probably a safety constraint.

If you stuck a Tesla powertrain in there, I'd be all about it.

It has the side profile of the last generation 6 series :(

Most paintings a rectangles, but there's a difference between Peter Paul Rubens' and Peter Paul Whoopsy's ;)

It's what's inside the boundaries that makes the difference; how it's filled in. The car has massively different lines and details is you ask me
