I think that the roof will retract not under the rear glass, but under the rear deck, just as the Cab roof does.  Notice that the rear deck cut-lines are identical to the Cab's.

Porsche found a pretty cool solution for the Targa roof and no, no manual interaction (other than pressing a button) needed. angry

That is awesome news! I like the targa a lot from what I see, and am very curious after how they did it. Hopefully Frankfurt will show us!

Didn´t we see a drawing of this Targa-solution here on Rennteam at least a year ago?? Smiley

We created a lot of photoshops of how we thought it might work, but as far as I know, those were all just speculation...

I didn't notice the cut lines until now, but you are right! Obviously, the roof will go under the rear deck. Must be fun to watch the mechanism :)

Based on the pics and the patent drawings, here's my guess:

There are articulated arms that are inwards of the B-pillars and attached to the rear of the targa roof.  To stow the roof, the rear deck lifts rearward (just like the Cab) and the middle part of the chrome "roll bar" lifts up (see the bar's cut-lines). The arms articulate backwards bringing the targa roof with it, stowing the roof under the rear deck.  The deck and the roll-bar then drop back into place.

    How's that guess, RC?

Still think the 993, 996, 997 Targa are the best.

Since we have a glass roof option on the 991, the old style of Targa is worthless

Re: 991 spyshots thread (continued) (for UNRELEASED models only) Thread Closed

A couple of weeks ago, I heard that Porsche will have a "suprise" at the IAA. Since the 918, the GT3, the Macan and the new Turbo/Turbo S are no real surprise anymore, I thought this is going to be the Turbo/Turbo S Cab or the GT3 RS. Now that the Turbo/Turbo S Cab seems to drive around without camoflage, I think it is going to be the GT3 RS. On the other hand, showing the GT3 and the GT3 RS at the same car show kind of steals the thunder from the GT3, so maybe it is going to be the Targa and the GT3 RS will be shown with a later occasion. I don't have a clue yet but I may know more end of August.

I actually think that showing the Targa at the IAA would make a lot of sense since the 911 Turbo/Turbo S Coupe and Cab will be there too and a 911 Turbo Targa would be sensational. Still not sure however if the Targa version will be available outside the Carrera model range but I surely hope so (and all rumors so far seem to support this).

My guess is Targa will be Porsche's version of a folding metal convertible roof, and it will be offered on all models which have a convertible version

No you say so, I did remember something floating around as well.
Guess this will be it then?

This one seems applicable as well, but guess it is less likely than the previous one:

If you look at the Targa spy pictures, the horizontal panel below the rear window has shut lines, which don't appear as camouflage to mistake the car for a cabrio. Therefore, the horizontal panel appears to  be movable, most probably for the window and the Targa metal parts to fold inside.

The above drawings are very credible.

Re: 991 spyshots thread (continued) (for UNRELEASED models only) Thread Closed

The English description for the system:

A roof construction for a motor vehicle has a roll bar and a roof element which, in a closed position, is accommodated between the roll bar and a windshield and, in an open position, is accommodated behind the roll bar and can be shifted from the open position into the closed position and vice versa beyond the roll bar via an opening and closing mechanism. The roof constructing further has a covering which covers the roll bar on the outside in the open position of the roof element and in the closed position of the roof element. Vertical extending side parts of the covering can be shifted relative to the roll bar during the shifting of the roof element. A transverse part of the covering extends substantially in a horizontal direction and is fastened to the roll bar so as not to be able to be shifted relative thereto.

    These are interesting additional drawings.

It looks like the rear deck along with the rear window first open rearward, just like on the cab (except on the cab, the rear window doesn't move along with the rear deck).  Then, the middle part of the roll-bar as well as the roof flip over and are stored under the rear deck - again, just like the cab.

This makes a lot of sense considering the early rumors that the new Targa mechanism took advantage of the cab's structure and mechanism.

As a big Targa fan - I'm getting excited.
