I get a feeling that sooner or later, Mercedes Benz will own more than a partnership.

Good news for both, probably more so for Aston Martin. In an ideal world it would be great for them to 1) remain British and 2) Their independence, but I doubt if they can continue to produce world class sports cars with the limited R & D resources of remaining independent.

I'd like to see A-M owned by Mercedes. It would have been ideal for Aston to be owned by a proper high profile manufacturer with the resources and the culture , rather than by a series of investors, funds and all sorts of entrepreneurs.
Ironically, if Astons are honed by Mercedes/AMG, they will present very strong competition for M-B's own products.

My wish to see Aston Martin stay in British ownership is patriotism I guess,,,,, Rolls Royce, Bentley, Jaguar, Land Rover all foreign owned. Can you imagine the furore in Germany if, say the Chinese bought out Mercedes or BMW? They'd never permit it.

Most of the engineers behind the brands you mention are British, as is the majority of the workforce. Who holds the share capital (and assumes the risk) is not so relevant under the circumstances. Think about it, these brands were near dead 15 years ago.
