    Boxster Coupe GTS:

As an aside, at the Frankfurt Motor Show the new Lamborghini Gallardo will be unveiled with a manual gearbox (also available on the next generation Audi R8) -- Porsche are understandably keen to maintain an appropriate range of GT models for cater for both new PDK drivers and their existing GT3 and GT3 RS customer base.

Gallardo replacement(Cabrera maybe...) will be presented early next year and it will be DCT only. I have pretty accurate info here(doc that I saw is sourced directly from Lambo).

BTW, 458 MC is coming at Frankfurt-around 620ps and upgraded suspension/brakes.

According to his direct words about Boxster GTS suggestions/predictions about 991 GT3 RS:

    -no

    -not possible

    -not at all

    So, read between the lines.Smiley

BTW, other remark that my P source made:"Most car press members that are complaining about PDK only in GT3 are from English language based magazines(read UK and USA). For example in Italy nobody in interested in good old stick gearbox for true sportscars. Interesting is the claim that only real men can drive manual??"

Smiley I think it has something to do with the "perception" of a manual gearbox in the US. In Germany (and most of Europe for that matter), people learn to drive...stick and they usually drive stick (manual) because cars with manual are cheaper, more affordable. In the US, most cars have an automatic transmission, so those who know how to drive stick actually feel special. Some would say "manly" or whatever. Smiley I get it, it is somehow special if 90% of the people around you probably don't know how to do it but this mentality doesn't seem to consider the fact that manual in professional racing sport has died a long time ago and in the remaining classes, it dies a slow death too.

So if someone claims he drives manual because he enjoys it, I get it. I truly do. However, if someone tells me that he is a serious and ambitious sports car driver, especially on the track, I do not get manual at all. It makes you slower. Smiley That said, I really think you are right, it seems to be a mentality thing. Also, it seems that in Germany, there are people who want manual too but considering those I met so far, they usually own older sports cars and of course you always love and sustain the stuff you have, right? Smiley

Give it time: As soon as less talented drivers achieve in their 991 GT3 PDK the same or even better lap times than more talented drivers in their older cars, the mentality will change and shift towards PDK. It is just a matter of time...

I remember a 996 GT3 driver who was surprised how fast a guy in his 991 Carrera S with PDK was during a driver ed event. He had a couple of years track experience, the 991 driver only a couple of months and the times were identical, which upset the GT3 driver a lot.  Of course the 991 is the more modern car and the 996 GT3 isn't exactly a highlight of the GT3 family but still, you get my point.

As to the Cabrera and R8: I heard a rumor that there was some sort of comparison event for a certain group of people with the new Cabrera, R8, 991 Turbo S and other sports cars. According to what I heard, the 991 Turbo S won the most "points" in the comparison, which apparently didn't refer only to performance but also daily driver capabilities, etc.. Still...pretty impressive.

Thanks - I was hopeful (but skeptical) that the Lambo would have manual option.  If the 458MC keeps 4.5L w/ 620hp, that would be 138hp/L (making the GT3 at 125 seem somewhat tame).

What I find interesting is the article states that Porsche believes most buyers of the GT3 will order the $9400 PCCB's. If the internet is any judge, Porsche will be very disappointed. Not many buyers who spec'ed their cars have ordered the PCCB's. I certainly will not. In fact, it is almost unanimous that PCCB's are not worthy of track work.

Nick, PCCB's are great.  They are the only item on my 997S (nine years old) which have been extremely reliable.  I've never had to have my brakes repaired.  Maybe you can offset the price of repairs against the $9400 price tag.  If you're not keeping your GT3 too long, maybe you can offset the price you would sell the car for, against the $9400 price tag.

The Gen I PCCB's were downright dangerous at the track.  Since, they have been steadily improving.  The new ones are gigantic 410mm x 36mm in front and 390mm rear, I think.  It's possible that they will now be very good on the track (but not everlasting as they market them).

Alan, very few people who have had cars with PCCB's have found worth the cost. They certainly look better, easier to clean and more durably for DD driving. But as you alluded to earlier, I have no intention to keep the car beyond a couple of years. On resale most buyers will be track enthusiast and if they are informed, they would not buy a GT3 which has PCCB's. I doubt very much I would get the money back from them.

I agree, for extensive track driving, PCCB may not be the best choice but I also heard that PCCB has been improved, especially track durability, so maybe someone needs to give it a shot to see if this is true. Smiley On the other hand, there is no better brake for spirited street driving and casual track fun, the precise breaking point/feel is amazing.

    Because of these last words?

The problem for Porsche is that this wider repertoire starts to bring the GT3 into Turbo territory. I can see Turbo sales suffering a bit as a result. It costs £100,540 and I think that's a complete bargain.

First, Top Gear hasn't driven the 991 Turbo S yet and second, the 991 Turbo S is a different type of car for a different type of audience. Put the same halfway skilled driver in a 991 Turbo S and a 991 GT3 and he will always be faster in the 991 Turbo S. The GT3 requires a good and experienced driver, some buyers will be disappointed that a talented driver in his BMW M5 may give them a run for their money on the track. On the street, the GT3 stands no chance vs. the 991 Turbo S but this is a completely different story.
