I remember seeing Liquid Metal silver in Weissach and it was gorgeous, surely this can't be it. This color makes a truly beautiful car look almost ordinary, shame. The shape really is very pretty.
The sound however is terrible! OMG, I hope they fix it before Frankfurt. What happened to the beautiful high pitched wail of the Carrera GT???
nberry:
This is a million dollar car and it sounds pathetic.
They need to work on the exhaust.
I agree this car is VERY color sensitive. Get the wrong color and the car just disappears.
In the Chris Harris video the car sounded fantastic, but in the Goodwood one it sounded like a motorcycle or even a 4-banger :(
Looks almost like agate grey and I love it. Very subtle (I know, someone who pays almost 800k EUR for a 918 may not want subtle), for me the best color...for my 991 Turbo S. Glad I ordered it.
I even like white on the 918 but I would avoid red (too Ferrari-ish) or yellow (boy racer).

During the test drives in Goodwood the limiter was set at 6,500 rpm was told by a friend who had a ride in it (he also told me that they had brake issues which forced them to suspend the drives) .

As the car stand right now, 3715lb propelled by 887hp, so 4.19lb per hp
Had Porsche built the 918 without the hybrid system and assume those stuff weights like 700lb, so 3000lb, or let be generous and say Porsche can get the car down to 2800lb. 2800lb propelled by 608hp, which equals 4.6lb per hp.
I think I will take the hybrid 918 over the conventional powered 918 11 times out of 10.

In this clip the cars sounds better than the Goodwood car. Weird to say the least.
Someone told me today that since the 918 passes the noise standard on pure electric, the 'muffler' is a lot smaller and tuned for music to the driver's ear, 2 feet away.
@spyderidol: I bought the car based on the technology merit. As a geek I valued that more than pure performance from my car guy side. The 918 is the modern day 959. But as it happened I was in the toilet and I decided to do the lb per hp calculation to pass time and I posted the figures after I got out. haha.

don't worry! I do much of my thinking there too. Sometimes one can tell, because the thought process is excrement.

Whoever was in charge of marketing destroyed this car's appeal. Car should never have been revealed way back then.
This car is nearly 3.5 years old. Seriously. Regardless of what has been happening under the hood, the car was revealed in March 2010 and has been in the news constantly. How on Earth can anyone get excited about this car taking delivery nearly 4 years later and seeing it non-stop since then?
The car is just not exciting anymore.

Wait until you see it on the street. I thought the same until I actually saw one. All I can say is WOW...this car really has a street presence.

All exotics have a ton of street presence. It's not a question of whether it's good looking or not. Maybe it's just me, but I want some level of surprise if I'm spending nearly $1M. It's like having all your Chirstmas presents under the tree a year in advance, unwrapped, and listening to all the other kids at school tell you what they're like. Now imagine they are under the tree for 4 years and you walk past them every fucking morning on the way out the front door. It's like seeing Star Wars IV, V, and VI for the first time in 2013 -- still awesome, but not anywhere near as awesome as it would have been had you saw them in the theater before the world was flooded with SW stuff.
I don't want to know how it sounds, how it looks in a bunch of colors, how it rides, how it works. I don't want to have the car studied in depth ad nauseum in the media for year prior to me getting it. I want my experience to be something new and unique.
Now, I don't always have that luxury because I have limits as to how much I'm willing to spend on a car, and as such that might mean waiting a year or two. It's a trade off. And I don't think everything warrants such an experience. That said, I'm spending one million fucking dollars. There is no trade-offs for a car that price.
Maybe that's just me, but I gotta believe there were a lot of interested people in 2010 who have little to no interest anymore. The amount of damage done to the car just by the press and public constantly talking about things like battery weight and exhaust sound is immense. They'd be sold out if they said absolutely nothing about the car and let no one anywhere near it.
And from a business stand point, it was terrible. It's no wonder they are having trouble selling them.
Show a sweet car, tell everyone it will have 918hp with fancy hybrid kers-like systems and cutting edge technology. Tell them it's $1M. That's it. Take orders, deliver cars within a year. No one would question anything about it. It's a $1M limited edition Porche -- everyone will assume it will be unbelievable and amazing looking.
That's it really. That's all Porsche had to do. Instead they gave people 4 years to let them lose interest and or find reasons not to buy one.
Now, I was probably never going to buy one in the first place, but I remember when the concept debuted I thought it was amazing. Now I've lost a lot of interest. I don't think I'm the only one and I'm sure there are a lot of potential buyers who have also experienced a degree of waning interest in the car. Even with special cars like this, interest fades over time.

I didn't order one but I think you are wrong. I know that Porsche cares a lot about 918 customers and they try to bring these customers closer to the 918 by offering special visits to learn about 918 development and other "goodies". I cannot go into details (those who ordered a 918 know probably what I am talking about) but I do not think that those who ordered a 918 really regret it. I can see however a problem with those who wanted a 918 but didn't order one yet for whatever reasons. I think they make a huge mistake, the 918 will be amazing and this car looks absolutely stunning when seen on the street.

How many decided not to order it though? That's the question. It's been 3.5 year and from what it sounds like, it's not sold out yet. IMO interest is waning, not gaining.
