The C pillar and rear window look very awkward. It would appear the designers have given the rear row of seats more headroom by creating a more upright rear window then tried to disguise it with a sharply raked C pillar. They haven't managed to pull this off successfully IMHO.

It looks more like a face lift ...... of the X3/X5 . BMW 's 1st generation X5 was great looking . After that it went down...
I will get an SUV probably next year, I was looking forward to the X5 , but now I am more tempted by RR Sports.
The only ' porblem' I have is that I must have enough space in the back for 3 kids and boot space for a family of 5 !

I find the 7 series rather attractive for a large limousine. The 5 series is a logical design without any emotion but OK for the typical middle saloon buyer. The Z4 is also nice for the ladies who bother to buy it. The 6 series is also OK for the average luxury/touring coupe/cabrio buyer for whom an upper BMW is a dream.
The rest of the range is rubbish in terms of styling. The new 3 series is a low point a non-event, the 1 series un-presentable and the 3 SUVs total design failures.
It is a pity that the huge engineering integrity of BMW, is not dressed in attractive metal.

Well, as a previous X5 owner I must say I'm heavy disappointed :-(.
I had the X5 1st generation (4.8iS), some of you may remember how fantastic this car was and after this the next generation, the X5M (till the last autumn).
Both cars were very special with great engines.
But now: you can't even see huge differences between X3 and X5. They lost their character completely.
Sorry BMW. My next SUV will be a Cayenne.

I am not sure they have a special engineering integrity - my perspective is that BMW is being overtaken by more and more OEMs like Audi, Porsche. Whenever I drive a BMW (or owned one in the past) I was not very impressed with the refinement of the product. BMW is more for buyers who cannot tell if a product is at 95% or 100% of the possible level of perfection...

I haven't spoken to my wife yet, I will also see what she prefers . I have good persuasion skills but if it is wrong after the purchase she will just not drive it and I'll have to change it at the end

I haven't owned a BMW for many years. I have occasionally test driven some of their cars (not top of the range) and I wasn't very impressed. However, I find them well made and advanced in certain areas. Two weaknesses are the brakes and the refinement of the diesel motors. Last year when I had to choose between the diesel Q 5 and the equivalent X3, my unequivocal verdict was in favour of the Audi. I am very happy both with the quality car and the local service.
