    Almost airborne !

Had my second (& more fightening) experience of almost getting airborne today .............both situations the same & unexpected : hitting a motorway overpass at speed & picking up a headwind at the crest. Front end felt as if it was barely in contact with terra firma (middle lane of three)and was all over the place . Was reminded of the old addage that every 911 can benefit from a bag of cement up front ! (a friend's 964 does have that & handles very nicely !)

    Re: Almost airborne !

That sounds scary as hell. I heard about this bag of cement fix. I thought it was just a myth!

    Re: Almost airborne !

    Do not be afraid!!
    It can fly

Porsche option - PCB 50, $2450 (Porsche Cement Bag 50lb)

    Re: Almost airborne !

early 911s had lead weight in the front becuase the engineers had difficulty making the rear engine balance out!

    Re: Almost airborne !

That is too scary for me!

    Re: Almost airborne !

I recall an old 930 ad with the car up in the air. WHEEEE!

    Re: Almost airborne !

    Good one flap!

LOL...that price -- in full leather w/porsche crest, yes?

Spindar, trade her in for a C4S...(sorry tho, there's only room for a
25 lb. bag of cement in smaller C4S front trunk ).

    Re: Almost airborne !

Found it on the Porsche configurator.

    Re: Almost airborne !

    Thats funny stuff

    Re: Almost airborne !

That sound scary to me as well, but will the 997 ever roll over in a fast turn? or does it have some special mechanism that helps the car from rolling?

This was a mistake on the part of Porsche engineers. They thought they needed weight upfront to offset the engine weight, but really it was that the ball joints up front were going bad. Once they resolved the joint issues the added weight was just that added weight. Porsche was still putting in the extra weight long after the joints were revised. Take a look at some old 911 owners who have safely removed this weight with no negative affects.

    Re: Almost airborne !

THIS IS IN THE NATURE OF THE MODEL in my opinion it will always exist unless the 911 is redesigned from scratch...

A thing i heard they will do for the 998

    Re: Almost airborne !

    coochas-hahahaha

don't forget the options on the cement bag

leather, two-tone, natural, carbon fiber, wood, alumi-look, heated, or the x50 porsche composite cement bag made with the sprinkles of graphite, carbon fiber, and dirt from the deepest ocean to observe purity.

    X50- Porsche 50lb Cement bag- $35,000
    (2 year dealer wait list)

    Moogle,
I even heard that they stuffed the front bumper with bolts and screws for that very same purpose on very early models...

At 83mph in a fast turn a 997 will flip. I always get round them at 82mph but have flipped two at 83mph and 84mph respectively.

THey have already done that. It's called the Cayman...

    Re: Almost airborne !

Haven't had it happen that way but I have gotten airbone from going over a crest or elevation on the asfalt at full throttle on third, and while "on the air" the rear wheels spun freely while I was full throttle enough to hit the rev limiter. Its a stretch of highway I know well and I don't take that bump fast enough to go airborn, but this time I did, its was on a straight line so not a problem. However in your case it can get scary and make you thankful of PSM that can brake either rear wheel independantly to help correct yaw when you have the fronts in the air

    Re: Almost airborne !

I guess the real solution would be to slow down but what fun would that be.

    Re: Almost airborne !

Or you could just opt for the 4 and 4s/turo variants that do not suffer from this problem.

    Re: Almost airborne !

Wheelies are good, just don't cross it up when you come back down.
