You are right, of course. But you forgot to add that racing engines are very frequently overhauled. In the higher racing classes, after each race.

Yes,
I was being ironic/facetious/sarcastic, as well. Here in the USA, Porsche advises us to keep rpm's under 4,000 for the first 2,000 miles of break-in, and last summer we all had a contentious debate on whether to adhere to that "to the letter."
I wonder if Porsche will modify that recommendation this time around, so we all will sleep better at night knowing we're not shortening the longevity of the engine on the new 997TT by hitting the overboost for the first 2,000 miles. I suppose if Porsche sticks to the same advisory this time 'round, if one wants to be a "strict constructionist" with the Porsche 997TT owner's manual, he'll have to keep the overboost turned off during the break-in.

Haha, yes that thread from last year is priceless. All hobby-racers' theories about how you really break-in a Porsche engine. The car comes with a manual, the manual states how to break-in the car, yet most people seem to believe that not following the manual is the best way for break-in... "For the first 3000 km only drive in first gear, during fullmoon nights and wearing a Santa Claus beard".

I went to Porsche's workshop after 750 miles for oil top-up. The workshop manager drove my 997 C2S for about 20 minutes to identify rattles and other minor issues. He said: "breakin is over. Now you have to push the car hard. It was designed to be driven hard."
I now push it more often, but after a good warmp up. Just make sure that you have enough oil (takes 5 minutes to test when ignition in the middle).

Mate, are you serious? How about the following novel idea: The break-in will be the same as for all other Porsche engines. Don't rev above x rpm the first y km. If you have Sport Chrono pressed, sunroof open or cupholders engaged will not matter...
In the end it probably does not matter how you break-in, but for some pretty funky theories please refer to the break-in thread on the 997 Forum.

I remember thinking that at the beginning. If break-in recommendations are really to be taken very seriously they should be formal warnings against excessive use of SC during break in.
So since there's no restrictions on SC use during breakin I gotta think breakin recommedations are merely suggestions.
Also, has anybody heard of a car which lost warrenty coverage because somebody refused to follow breakin recommedations?
All this tends to suggest Porsche's breakin reccomendations are needlessly conservative. I.e. yeah maybe for the first 500 miles keep RPMs varied and low, but not for 2000!
