    Re: OFFICIAL: New 911 GT3 (991)

The Porsche 24 month lease does address some of those concerns. Porsche gets back a car with low mileage (there is a 10,000 mile limit) and the buyer/lessee is protected by not concerning himself with end of lease value.

That said, still not certain that is the way I want to go. Assuming no deposit, one would be paying about $25,000 a year to rent a car.Smiley

BTW, why is it so important to know the top speed in each gear?Smiley

The lower the top speed in the respective gears the better the acceleration (better use of the high-end of the hp curve) Smiley

That I understand but I guess the context of my question is the gearing in the 991GT3 is what it is. cheeky It is the RPM's that matter.

If you can tell when the car will pull hard and at what rpm, then you'll understand why it's important to know the top speed in each gear and how many revs it will drop on every upshift

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 911 GT3 (991)

Exactly - If it had 997 S gearing it would do 90+ mph in second gear. (or 60+ in first)  Trying to get a sense of how quick it is in each gear.  This is VERY short gearing using up all the revs.  From what I gather it will be much shorter than a 997.2 GT3 which is what I suspected.  Also in terms of street driveability you will be buzzing around at failry high revs or PDK will be in 5th or 6th at 40mph.  It is certainly not a relaxed motor for street given the gearing.

It is also a common stat very popular with car enthusiasts.  'It is what it is' could be applied to any measure of performance.  For me this is a more useful stat than Ring-time.

Since the GT cars maintain their value (better) it would seem most logical to tap into cheap sources of money and just buy it without a Porsche payment.

Thank you all for your excellent and detailed response to my question.  I appreciate it!  Great Forum members are a joy!

Except that 98K Pounds is 149K US Dollars.  In some states there is NO sales tax at all.  There is NO national VAT in the US.  My sales tax in KS is around 7%.

True though.  The gap is not so great any longer.

UK Pricing for this new model is as follows:

    911 GT3: £100,540.00 (RRP inc VAT)

The UK specification for the new 911 GT3 includes the following: Top tint windscreen, Porsche Vehicle Tracking System, Third year warranty including Porsche Assistance cover and a Porsche Driving Experience.

Correct ...the grey top tint windscreen (GBP77), Porsche Vehicle Tracking System (GBP1140), 3rd year warranty (GBP1020) and 3rd year warranty (GBP169) are compulsory 'options' in the UK bringing the price up to GBP100540 but these are not standard spec in the US so to compare apples with apples, one needs to use the UK base price of GBP98134. BTW, in the US, the 4 year warranty is standard spec so no need to pay for a further warranty extension there.

The short gearing may very well be a major aspect of the "involvement" described for the car, by keeping the revs and exhaust note up in "normal" driving if so desired. This can be entertaining and fatiguing, so I assume one can also loaf along in 4th or 5th as well.  I can envision several impressions this car may leave me with once I drive it, positive and negative. There's only one way to find out.

There is a reason why the RPM indicator is the largest and centrally located dial.Smiley Pull is something a driver feels if he knows his car. Rarely if ever does a performance driver consult his speed. It is all about RPM's and the feel of the car at least for me.Smiley

In Europe, this alternative exists.  These cars are built mainly in the UK, which I believe is the last heaven of the true sports-cars enthusiast.  For example, a simple Caterham R300 superlight of only 175hp can be faster than a 997.2 GT3 on a track,

Sorry, this is quite a strange view. These cars (Caterham etc.) are like dog food on the track, even with a 997GT3 Smiley

I've owned and heavily tracked GT3RS, GT2RS and GT3RS 4.0 (and other Porsche). I also have spent hours with a BAC Mono and driven it on track. That's me in the avatar with Ian Briggs (BAC). Let me assure you the Mono makes any GT3 or GT2 look, from an aesthetic, driving feel and engineering standpoint, like used dog food. The Mono is carbon, billet and aerospace quality fit and finish. A Mono on it's OE street tires will be faster on any given track than a Cup on slicks. And it will do it at a 70% lower operating cost per hour.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 911 GT3 (991)

What is the reason to compare fully racing cars with universal car that can be driven +/- comfortably on public roads and being raced on track?

You say a less than 200hp Mono on street tires will be faster than a GT Cup on slicks on any track? I don't quite follow you here...

Let me just post the following: Mono (KTM X-Bow, ca. 800kg, ca. 240hp):

HHR about 2s slower than a standard GT2RS

NBR about 40s slower than a standard GT2RS

Even if the setup of another Mono is likely to be superior to this KTM, and even if it was lighter (like 500 or 600kg) - the gap to close is quite big to start with. And we are not talking about being faster still.

The Radical SR8 needs 360hp (i.e. not the 200hp discussed above) to be ca. 30s faster than a standard GT2RS on the NBR - but the Radical is NOT street legal in many European countries again.

Why so surprised??!! Cayman R rings the bell?

Cayman R was more in the lines of a 997GTS and has nothing to do with a GT3 (same engine and tranny as regular Cayman, no aerokit, not track focused, etc), if this Cayman GT is built it will be much more radical departure from the Cayman model range.

I personally don't see it happening, the motorsport section will want to build it but the pencil pushing bean counters won't allow it IMO, which is unfortunate.

But if they do build it, pricing would be its key as nick points out, because if its really a GT3 version, the engine, suspension, S-PDK, etc will raise the price significantly over the other Cayman versions and if its too close to the GT3, it will flop, since "most" people would go for a GT3 since it carries all the image both from it being a 911 and also from the pedigree the GT3 has aquired over the years. And being based on a Cayman, even though it will handle incredibly, it won't have the "exclusiveness" appeal for the poseurs to justify the pricetag for them.

I drove a Cayman with a GT3 engine in it in Qatar about 4 years ago. It was at the time quite simply the best new Porsche I had driven to date. It was more fun than a turbo or a GT3. A Cayman GT3 with 425bhp, better suspension and a bit lighter would be close to the perfect car.

I think this is way off topic and also my personal preference has always been for sportscars rather than purpose-built trackcars, but in defense of the facts, the Radical Sr3SL is fully EU Type-Approved and therefore legal in every EU country.

They just tested the SR8. No clue about the "Sr3SL" and its performance... Frankly, I am also not interested in these cars as you also state for yourself.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 911 GT3 (991)

Photoshop above appears to be similar to the Sport Classic grey which I think would suit the car very well.  Doubt that Paint to Sample will be available anytime during initial production, however.
