iPod Connector Porsche OEM Available APRIL 2006

    Some good news!

Just spoke to my service manager at my dealership (Manhattan Motorcars) - apparently an iPod hook up is coming from Porsche scheduled to be in dealers next month. It is going in the same place as where the CD Changer would have gone (I was inquiring about the changer installation which I was told would be near $3,000). It is a hardwire connection through the MOST bus and NOT FM modulated. You have the choice of mounting the iPod anywhere though I will probably have it placed in the center console. The part itself is $200-300 estimated, the labor will be about an hour and a half so we're looking at $500 or so for a complete install at my dealership (may be different with yours).

    About time Porsche!

Re: iPod Connector Porsche OEM Available APRIL 2006

Good news if it turns out to be true.
    Anything to substantiate his claim?

Then again he could be pulling your chain

Re: iPod Connector Porsche OEM Available APRIL 2006

AND HOW WILL IT BE CONNECTED THROUGH the main console??/

If the connector is in the hood then the ipod should be mounted to the hood, otherwise there must be additional cables inside the car to connect the ipod to the main dashboard

    VERY good news.... BUT.... ?????

Do you know if you have to have a particular version of the PCM to make this work? I have a very early 2005 997s and it won't play MP3 cds etc....

Re: VERY good news.... BUT.... ?????

    mine too John

I don't think he is - if you want his contact # feel free to PM me. He's come through many times on Porsche news for me.

I don't think this is an issue. From what I am hearing it will work on both 987/997 and I don't think a PCM is required (for Boxster models). Not sure if a certain version of the PCM is required for 997 models. How this is going to work I don't know. I'll hear back from him soon and post his reply.

    I'm under that impression.

The adapter is going where the CD changer would have gone - and there will be additional wiring into the cabin to allow you to plug in the iPod at a location of your choosing. I asked if it will charge it and those details have not been released yet.

Re: iPod Connector Porsche OEM Available APRIL 2006

BUT if the ipod connector is connected through cd slot, THEN
1)the adaptor going in the slot will look very ood, just like the cd adaptors that were in fashion years ago, and went into the cassete slot of the old cassete radio players.
2)What use is the wiring in the front hood? ,in the same locaton with the ,cd-changer ?and DVD based navigation system??

a little confused, i just hope they will find a simple quality solution, that will cost less than a complete audio system!!!

I think we have some confusion here.

The CD changer goes in the front trunk on both 987 and 997 models. That's where they are planning to install this new OEM adapter. I'm assuming there'll be a cable going to come from the rear of the head unit/PCM and straight to that area to have it interface with the MOST bus. There will be additional wiring (concealed presumably) to the place in the cabin that you want to "dock" the iPod to. So there won't be any wires dangling anywhere. The center console is the most logical spot IMO to dock an iPod while in the car.

It will definitely cost less, he gave me an estimate of $500 US including the adapter and labor.

Re: iPod Connector Porsche OEM Available APRIL 2006

ok thats nice, will it be also working with ipod NANO???

Re: iPod Connector Porsche OEM Available APRIL 2006

Should work with all iPods that have a dock connector.

Re: iPod Connector Porsche OEM Available APRIL 2006

FYI, I'm going to have it installed in my 987S once it becomes available (hopefully no delays), I will have pictures up.

Re: iPod Connector Porsche OEM Available APRIL 2006

i will install it too, instead of the rip-off cd changer instalation costs!!!!!

I was considering the changer for the sound quality but now that the adapter is hardwire instead of FM .. it'll suffice

Re: iPod Connector Porsche OEM Available APRIL 2006

Hmmm, when will it be released, April 1?

No exact dates yet, I was told sometime in April.

I was hoping midnight on April 1st but, we'll see...

Re: iPod Connector Porsche OEM Available APRIL 2006

Fantastic news BUT we've all been disappointed so many times by so many false rumours that I will breathe a sigh of relief only when concrete info is announced. Till then I will live in hope.

    But thanks anyway!

Re: iPod Connector Porsche OEM Available APRIL 2006

I think it's the most valid news I've gotten yet regarding this matter. I will find out more soon when I talk to him again, but things are looking good!

Re: iPod Connector Porsche OEM Available APRIL 2006

So, if you have a changer, they will have to remove it? Or will this work with it?

Re: iPod Connector Porsche OEM Available APRIL 2006

That I don't know - I'll take all these questions and ask him next time I talk to him. Only makes sense to have both work together though

If it's anything like VW's official iPod connector then you lose the use of the changer.

    Update

A PCM unit is required (bad news for Boxster owners). More details to follow

Re: iPod Connector Porsche OEM Available APRIL 2006

Thanks for delivering the wonderful news, AJ!

I wonder how this will affect the folks at Dension. They told the Porsche world their iPod integration kit (Icelink if I'm not mistaken) would be available several months ago. To this day, they have failed to deliver.

    GA997S,

That's more concrete than DNA evidence

I was planning on getting it installed in my 987S but we'll see if it'll work with non-PCM cars. Either way I'll try and snap photos at the dealership for all you Rennteamers

Re: iPod Connector Porsche OEM Available APRIL 2006

    thanx ajcastaneda!!!

BUT there is a catch in all hardwiring instalations in a 997

    When i ordered a cd changer+phone module+passive handset

they told me a price and then, they told me they should:

CHECK HOW MAY OPTIC FIBRES MY CAR HAS....!!!

THEY SAID THAT ALL 997 DO NOT HAVE THE SAME OPTIC FIBRES PRE INSTALLED....

AND THE BILL WENT UP 1500 eURO CAUSE THEY NEEDED to instal 2 micro firbres around 400 Euro each and 650 Euro for each one to install!!!

And because i m not an [censored] i cancelled the order and demanded full and at the spot refund of my money .,:(
