    Re: OFFICIAL: New 911 GT3 (991)

In the current issue of Excellence magazine, Hartmut Kristen, chief of Porsche Motorsport, pointed out that "until the racing authorities settle on the future direction of GT regulations, Porsche did not feel justified "spending millions of Euros on a short term investment,' and so had decided to stick with the well proven engine from the previous RSR." Other manufacturers have made the same statement regarding upcoming changes in GT regulations(Nissan).

Saw the above posted on another forum. Is it concerning that it would cost "millions" to get this new GT3 engine durable enough for racing ? The current RSR engines are very similar to street GT3 units but I guess the millions had already been spent over the years to get them to this standard yes

Without trying to bring the same subject up again, this could indicate that Porsche are not developing any new engine for racing at the moment, and that the 991 GT3 DFI block is purely for road use and will never be put into the race cars.

Still buyers have 2 options - if you don't want to new DFI block you could either buy an old Mezger based GT3, or a Carrera GT... Spoilt for choice ;)

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 911 GT3 (991)

    You are absolutely correct...

But P1's time just got me curious about how fast 918 can go. From the video I think they once again limited 918's V8 to 6500rpm..........

Well, actually if you follow this thread from the beginning, you will find that the very same thing has been reported here too. So it must be true. Smiley Why should Porsche invest millions as a short term investment as long as they do not know what is going to happen with regulations ?

Why develop the DFI engine for motorsport only to find that it does not meet  future regulations?  Didn't this happen to Porsche w/ the 959 and the changes to Gruppe B regs?  Not wanting to take the risks of development does not confer unsuitability for the application.

Well according to Wikipedia, the 918 did the course in 49.13, that is mighty impressive, if true.

6 seconds on a 1 minute course is a huge difference (10%).  Remember, the 'Ring is 7 1/2 minutes...

Can't find any other source to support that...

I think the 918's rev was limited at 6500rpm when it ran from the video I watched,.

Vehicle reviews should always be based on production vehicles, never on pre-production cars.  However, this practice is very common to get the car in front of the potential purchasers before production begins.  One would be surprised by how often the finalized product deviates from the pre-production vehicles.

Yesterday, I viewed the latest video from Porsche Classic.  It was almost  like I looking at a totally different company compared to one pushing the new PDK equipped 991 derivatives.

The engine is phenomenal! Sounds amazing at launch control. Exhaust system sounds a little muted, however. I can't wait to hear what the aftermarket can do to open it up a little bit.

I disagree...the Ferrari buyers,  at least in the US, who want to be the first with  the most desired new models and at MSRP cannot stray or they have to start all over with the " worthy vs non worthy " initiation BS with their local dealership ...like having to buy an FF and suffering immediate 150 k depreciation hit  , lol.

My point is, whithin 5-10 years of Porsche phasing out all manual transmissions, and with a new generation of drivers , many not yet old enough right now to even drive,  who will  only know clutches as something ancient used by their grey haired dads and uncles, this MT phase out discussion will be long forgotten.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 911 GT3 (991)

that launch control sounds horrible - lots of wheel-hop and long delay bouncing off the rev-limiter before hitting second.  Just saying -

I have seen much sweeter launches of the new 991 GT3 - when it hooks up and its done right IT IS PURE SEX.  Good to know it does take some skill.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 911 GT3 (991)

Most likely correct - there was some footage of him doing a bit of wild driving while in the queue to start.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 911 GT3 (991)

    Exactly!

The point of this run at Goodwood FoS was to provide entertainment for the crowds, hence lots of wheel spin etc, rather than to achieve the minimum possible 0-60mph time!

I tend to disagree.  Here's why: the "new" has a tendency to recycle something from the past.  Once all cars are equipped with automatic transmissions, and yes, in the eyes of the most governmental organizations, PSK is viewed as an automatic, the uniqueness of sports cars is greatly diminished.  In fact, look that a well sorted robotised dual clutch manual box needs no driver input beyond setting it into drive.  The shift points are better optimised by the electronics than by the driver using paddles for gear selection.  There is nothing more to differentiate a sports car from the mere fast saloon, for reference, look to the recent comparison tests between the Audi RS6 estate and the Nissan GT-R.

When product differentiation is blurred, the younger consumers will look for greater distinction.  Plus, many purchasers of sports cars believe, real or imagined, that they possess greater driving skills than average.  Hence, the reason why a number of Subaru BRZs have left roundabouts backwards, following failed attempts at "drifting."  One way to offer that desired product differentiation is through manual transmissions.

The video shows a :55 laptime with passenger.  Doesn't jive with the '6 seconds' remark in the short article.

I don't believe he was using launch control...too much wheel spin which resulted in him leaving about 1 second on the table on that run...

    Cheers

Totally agree.  The whole PDK vs. manual debate is mostly defined by generation change.  The majority of current generation of drivers favor PDK, and this majority will become virtually the monopoly with the next generations, since they will not have experienced the pleasure of MT. This, factored in with the undeniable technical advantages of PDK, makes its advent and the demise of MT inevitable.
