    Re: OFFICIAL: New 911 GT3 (991)

Some good points here regards weight.

Id imagine the old Li-iOn battery wasnt a heavily subscribed option given the excessive price. For less than the price of this option you could rip out the standard chairs and replace with the forementioned Recaro PP and bracket for track days for a saving of 55kg bringing this new GT3 weight down to 1380kg and stiil have enough change to buy an Odyssey Gell Cell battery (300 Euro) which will save 2/3 of the weight saving offered by the Li-ion unit....

This will be my budget weight saving regieme for the 991 GT3....along with of course rear "Porsche" logo "delete" (done with a hairdryer for zero cost) and also having rear bumper "reflectors" sprayed body coloured as I think they are ugly (probably total cost 60 Euro!). Add to that having the rear of the standard seats vinyl wrapped in white gloss vinyl to match the exterior of the car for 250 Euro the pair (takes 90 minutes and does not require removing the chairs or disassembling them!) I cant think of better low cost was to make this car look even better....

    2) 7:24 is Aventador territory - no way the GT3 "basic"  can get there..

Slightly off topic but it would be good to say Lamborghini have finally made a supercar that drives well too. To get that time in a car that is so heavy, and beat the best 911 so far is a major achievement.

Back on topic, given no customer can drive the new GT3 before buying it, I think reviews such as those from Chris Harris etc are also important along with the track times.

I have to say, I really like the aventador..except this centre console which looks completely,.but otherwise - very nice. And still good without rear steering, e - steering etc..so the example shows..pure cars can still be built ..- even more, they are also succesfullSmiley

Have you driven one? I havent,..have only driven gallardo once - by the way - another "pure" car..more in a not so good way..but the typical Italian supercar..not usable daily etc..but thats the charme.Smiley. Girls like it definately more than a GT3..Smiley

No, I dont think a 991 GT3 can be any danger for an aventador..- whose biggest drawback is what we discussed here already: Weight.

looks much better indeed..:) - best looking 991 from the back.

Today I saw again one on the street from the back besides me..made me think..I still dont like the back from the 991..this GT3 is however a huge improvement..

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 911 GT3 (991)

I would be happy to order the Li-ion battery once more, as I did in the past.  BTW, it came in addition to the traditional battery and performs greatly.  So you get two batteries.

    Budget considerations?  Are you kidding?

You would probably spend much more on tyres alone in the first year.  Should I mention gasoline?  Or would you drive in an eco mode to save fuel with the GT3?

I like innovation and performance.  I encourage them when I can.  I would be quite disappointed to see that the Li-ion battery, which brings about innovation and performance, is removed from the Porsche offering, while Porsche continues to propose silly options such as colors for the dials, safety belts, PCM, key (?!), leather in any conceivable tiny place you may think of … and many more! … adding weight of course on top of bad taste.

I prefer to let Porsche make money on the cars I buy new from them when I order innovative and performance equipment for my sports cars, certainly not leather or fancy colors ad nauseam.

I thought this line of thinking was right with respect to true sports cars, like the GT3.

People must be consistent on this forum:  a wave of protest criticizes the 991 GT3 because it lost its edge relative to the 997.2, is too heavy, etc… while some are ignorant or dismissive of a great innovative item which could offer a real plus about weight with no downside.

Please help me, I am lost!  Smiley

    PBS2010:

About the extra weight on the 991 GT3, I find surprising that Porsche is not offering the light Li-ion battery as an option,

Is there a problem or another good reason explaining that the Li-ion battery is not proposed right away on the 991 GT3?

    Any thoughts about it?  Smiley

They explained it in the video with the engineer actually. They HAD to fit the bigger/heavier battery for that rear axle steering system. He says that they ran both the standard car with lighter battery and no real wheel steering head to head with one with heavier battery and the steering and they opted for the latter so the performance benefits outweight the weight loses... I think that is clever because competition is tighter and tighter these days.

At the end of the day, track figure and acceleration figures are less and less important because we are soon at the very physical limits. That is to say, Porsche is shifting gears with the new GT3 in that they want to make it quicker using new technologies (motor mounts, smart PDK, rear wheel steering etc etc..) This is certainly the way to go. Porsche also knows why the GT3 is so special so rest assured they are well aware that they needed to keep the raw and emotional aspects of the drive.

Afterall it's not about pure acceleration anymore... want that just get a 730HP VW Golf and be done with it

    0-100 takes 3.1
    0- 200 takes 9.6

Bottom line, the new GT3 is as fast as the last GT3 RS and retains all the emotional driving aspects.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 911 GT3 (991)

I agree. Just wish they wouldnt bother with those ugly rear bumper reflectors. Probably a US market requirement. I would pull those out and have painted or vinyl wrapped in a heartbeat...

Are those just reflectors or go they contain the fog lights? Would be good to replace them with clear ones or get rid of them completely as in the earlier pic on track...

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 911 GT3 (991)

Boytronic. Good point. I have no idea. Are there any 991 owners here than can confirm? If they are fog lights then they could be vinyl wrapped with a film that is opaque from the outside but lets light through. Perhaps increase the strength of the LED light to improve the performance with film over the top. Frankly I don't see many people driving this car in the fog and even when they do so I doubt they will use them (Ive not used them on my 993 in 13 years of driving as I forget they are there and they are not a mandatory requirement in my country).

Maybe a 991 owner here can confirm if they are a fog light. I believe they could be.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 911 GT3 (991)

I can now confirm that these are "rear red reflectors" in the rear bumper not fog lights. This information is specified within the online configurator print out once you have selected your options...good news....who needs em!

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 911 GT3 (991)

I have no issue what-so-ever with the red reflectors. They break up what would otherwise be a vast expanse of white.

Unfortunately, I'm not a fan of white.

Based on my knowledge the Li-ion battery is not suitable in cold climate conditions Smiley Most people seem to use it for track use only. But even a track day can be a cold day...

I did not find in the Porsche literature on the 991 GT3 information about the width of the front track.

Does anyone know what the width of the front track is?

    Thanks.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 911 GT3 (991)

I was asked to try and take a photo of the exhaust by some pretty sceptical Porsche race engine builders who seem to think it incredible that Porsche are using the A91 engine for the GT3. I think the photos confirm that they are indeed.

Does there appear to be a switchable exhaust valve there ? that's so very motorsport - not Smiley

This and other "features" on the new GT3 are indicative of the changing regulatory environment the world over.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 911 GT3 (991)

What does a switchable exhaust valve have to do with whether or not the new GT3 engine is suitable for motorsport? Or substantially different from the base 9A1? Maybe I misunderstood your post TB993tt.

Maybe t got this wrong but I don't really follow GT3 stuff that closely (I prefer turbo torque)  I thought switchable exhausts on non turbo cars were all about making a bit more noise for aural effect/satisfaction/sensation and nothing to do with increasing the engine performance (unlike in a turbo car where they can really help with back pressure reduction) - but maybe it is on the GT3 to allow it to run at tracks with lower noise levels Smiley

While the point you make about keeping noise in check for race tracks may be a legitimate concern at places like Laguna Seca, I think you are right that it is mainly about enabling quiet/loud mode. I do believe I read something about additional torque/hp when the valve is open but not sure on that. I still don't see what a valve on the exhaust tells us about the underlying engine, the 997.2 GT3 had exhaust valves as well.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 911 GT3 (991)

According to the 997.2 GT3 / RS brochure the Sport button gives 35nm of extra torque.

OT: 911Rox please checkout the class action lawsuit against Porsche on Pistonheads which has been settled. There should be one for CL too. But as RC said lets stick to the new GT3 here :)

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 911 GT3 (991)

The switchable exhaust is only for reduction in drive by db. Its function could serve to qualify the car on race tracks around the world which are increasingly policing noise pollution more stringently. It makes no difference to output that I'm aware of and is independant of  "sport/race track" mode which incidently is a function only applicable when the the  gear box is in fully automated mode...

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 911 GT3 (991)

    Agree. Loose the reflectors.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 911 GT3 (991)

Such an exciting car. I hope some aspects of this PDK make it to the regular road cars.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 911 GT3 (991)

Like the previous model, the front mufflers can be acti- vated and deactivated via two map-con- trolled exhaust flaps for high engine performance. The front mufflers are activated and deactivated via vacuum- controlled exhaust flaps. When these flaps are closed, the exhaust gas is directed exclusively via the front muf- flers to the main silencer. When the exhaust flaps open, this provides a direct passage to the main silencer, resulting in a reduction in exhaust back- pressure and a further increase in engine power.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 911 GT3 (991)

reflectors are separate on 991 because no reflectors on light units themselves.

if reflectors are removed, you face an increased risk of your parked GT3 on dark road being hit as no light would reflect from the rear ..

probably also mean that car might fail government tests .. such as the MOT in the UK
