    2013 F1 season

What are everyone's thoughts regarding the upcoming F1 season?  I'm predicting RBR at the top with McLaren a close second and Lotus consistently in the mix, as well.

The mix of Button and Perez at McLaren will make things interesting, and I'm hoping the best for them.  It'll be interesting to see how Perez will do with one of the big teams; I have faith in him!

I believe we'll see Lewis's mistake in full force come winter testing.  I, personally, just don't see Mercedes as a contender for either title.  Lewis will drive the pants off of that car, but it just won't be enough.

Ferrari needs to get their act together with their wind tunnel or whatever the issue is (perhaps it's a personnel problem) before they can be consistent contenders again.  As a Fernando and Ferrari fan, I'll stop being a fan if they continue to treat Massa like garbage.  Granted, he wasn't doing well until the latter half of the season, but they need to have neutrality at the start of this season.

    Re: 2013 F1 season

Ferrari is in Koeln (Cologne) at the Toyota center for wind tunnel testing... I think they are restructuring their departments...

    Re: 2013 F1 season

I hope for a battle like we've seen at the beginning of 2012 - would be boring if it is again "Finger" against a Mac or Fezza.... - I hope Kimi can make his car a bit faster but with little rule changing I do not expect big jumps but rather more of the same. I would vote immediately for 3 cars per team and kick out a few in the back - that would make things more interesting....

    Re: 2013 F1 season

I am sure I am going to be unpopular for saying this, but my F1 devotion is waining every year.  Even with the incredible start to this season, it is still a sport about technology more than it is a driving sport.  I missed four races this year, which is a first (in the past seasons, I might have missed one, possibly two).  I have found myself watching other motorsport and enjoying it more ALMS, LeMans Series and (GASP) NASCAR.

Anyway, just my two cents.  I know F1 is trying to create more and more passing and it is happening mid-positions, but P1 is usually a lock from the beginning and rarely is their a change towards the end of the race.

I don't have any suggestions as it is difficult for F1 to remain the technology king, race on the circuits that they do and have the racing excitement I want.

    Re: 2013 F1 season

I have lost a lot of interest in F1 too. I only watched half of the races last season and of those two or three I found really interesting. The third title of Vettel made me happy, though.

As to technology, to me the Audi R18 e-tron quattro, for example, has more relevant and interesting technology than any F1 car.

    Re: 2013 F1 season

With little or no regulation changes it gives the likes of Ferrari, McLaren & Mercedes a chance to close the gap on RBR.  It also gives Adrian Newey virtually no scope for improving the RBR, which is something he has always excelled at in the past.

With only 3 points separating SV and FA last season, there's every reason to suspect that the roles could be reversed...

My personal feeling is that Mercedes and LH will treat 2013 as a preparation exercise to develop the 2014 car for when the big changes take place.

    Re: 2013 F1 season

I think that 2012 was very good for the sport worldwide and we see some new big name sponsors and continue to see great new tracks. Austin will be a great addition to the seasons to come. The best part about 2013 is that teams will be able to develop their 2012 cars as rules have finally stayed a little more to the ground.

As for engines, I think it is a smart move from the sport to downsize as it's a thing that's going on in general and F1 has to follow suit to stay relevant to the industry. I bet Ferrari is complaining but times really are changing and while I would have complained a couple of years ago myself, I can see and even accept the change today.

It'll be very interesting if the cars stay so close in performance. I enjoy watching Red Bull and how young and hungry they are. It will be amazing to see how they approach 2013 having been so successful lately. I am also hoping that Mercedes will win GPs and come in ahead of Ferrari!

Is Easy on vacation somewhere? he really enjoys the F1 discussions and I don't think I've seen him post lately.

Mercedes reveals 2014 Formula 1 engine...

    2014-Mercedes-F1-V6-engine_02.jpg

    (11 January 2013)

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the first images of the 2014 Formula 1 power unit that it believes will put the 'motor back in motorsport'.

As dyno testing of its new V6 1.6-litre turbo charged unit continues at its Brixworth facility, Mercedes says early indications from its work are pointing towards an exciting era for grand prix racing once the 2014 rules come into force.

Andy Cowell, managing director of Mercedes-Benz High Performance Engines, dismissed fears that the new power units would not deliver as exciting a sound as the current V8 engines, and predicted thrills for fans and challenges for drivers.

"The engines are going to be loud, but I think sweet sounding," he said on Friday. "The frequency will be higher and, with the turbocharger running at 125,000rpm, they will be loud. When you are stood next to it on the dyno it is not quiet and you need ear defenders.

"There will be a new quality to the racing too. It will edge towards a thinking drivers' formula to get the most from the car and the available fuel energy.

"The engines will also deliver much more torque - especially on the exit of the corners. Cars with more power than grip coming out of the corners - that is something that we all enjoy.

"They will also put F1 back at the cutting edge of new technology - which is what the fans want."

Red Bull chief technical officer Adrian Newey suggested last year that the power units would become the critical factor in deciding the outcome of the 2014 championship.

Cowell believed it was too early to be specific about the impact the engines will have, but was confident that the importance of the engine manufacturer would be greater than it was now, a move he welcomed.

"We are putting the motor back in motorsport, but to what extent we will only know in 2014," he said. "It will definitely have more of an influence."

The new power units will produce the same 750hp figure of the current engines but a larger percentage of that will come from Energy Recovery Systems.

The current KERS currently produces 80hp for 6.7 seconds per lap, while the new ERS will deliver 161 hp for 33.3 seconds per lap.

Cowell said: "Today it is difficult to be quick without KERS - for 2014 it will be impossible to go racing without ERS."

    Autosport's verdict on 2014 Formula 1 engines...

    2014-Mercedes-F1-V6-engine_01.jpg

    (11 January 2013)

Autosport F1 Editor Jonathan Noble's verdict on the 2014 engines...

People normally say you should believe nothing of what you hear and only half of what you see.

But today was an exception to that rule - as selected Formula 1 media, including Autosport, got a first chance to listen to exactly what a 2014 V6 turbo engine is going to sound like.

For years we have heard conflicting stories about the audio qualities (or lack of them) of the new 2014 V6 turbo engines.

In one corner were Bernie Ecclestone and a few race promoters - who suggested they would sound 'terrible' and needed to be dropped.

In the other corner were the engine manufacturers who insisted the power units would deliver a different - but still satisfying – noise.

At Brixworth today, Mercedes-Benz delivered its definitive answer to the debate when it played the audio from a dyno simulated lap of the Monza track.

And the smiles around the table of those hearing it for the first time delivered a conclusive answer that fans will have little to worry about.

Yes, the high-pitched shriek of the V8 engines hitting the rev limiter at 18,000rpm may be gone, but the new deeper noise is certainly nothing to be disappointed about.

There is still a solidness to the sound; one that will be amplified when the engines are put onto racing cars with proper exhausts and allowed to play flat-chat on race tracks around the world.

Mercedes' engine chief Andy Cowell reckons the new engines actually sound 'sweeter' than the current V8s, and no one present today could disagree.

The state of secrecy in F1 means that audio of the engines will not be ready for public consumption for a while – for even the sound could provide an advantage to rivals – but fans should rest assured that there is little to fear from what is coming in 2014.

You will still need your ear plugs next year. And that is great news.

This will be exciting, who has the best design skills and I agree the best engine design will win the 2014 season. BUT, I am really scared there will be niches and holes in the rules and guidelines coming from the FIA.. hopefully they will get it together and make it a "fair competition" schedule with no one managing to make a much better engine than the rest due to a small technicality here and there.

I wonder if Ferrari will be lacking in this area, since they don't have experience with smaller engines like MB, Lotus, Renault, etc.  However, I suppose their deep pockets may be able to pick up at least some of the slack, if they are lacking.
