    Tire burning smell

    Hello Friends,
    Bear with me I am getting there in learning my new 997.my car is 3300km now and after a long ride I smell a tine burn smell from the back wheels. as if the exhoust heating the tires up.. is this normal in porsche or what !!

    I have the same problem with my 987S. Called the dealer and he claimed it was only dirt from the road that it would go away. It didn't, so I took the car to the dealer and after looking underneat the car the saw an oilleak from a gasket just over the headers: its now being fixed together with an oilchange.

    Are you sure it's not just the exhaust you can smell?

    I am sure, it is like a rubber burning smell ....
    when I touched the tires they were pretty hot !!I have notice that there is no firewall between the tires and the exhaust... strange but true...

    This smell is completely normal. I have never heard of any damage being caused by it, although I was not aware that this could be as a result of the proximity of the exhaust pipes to the tyres - interesting if true. Anyway, no need to worry IMHO. Also after 5k miles I don't seem to get this anymore - I suspect therefore there is more to this than tyres / exhaust.

    It's completely normal - especially when new when the clutch is still getting loose during break in. After 7K miles on my 987S I still smell it, but it's usually after VERY spirited driving only. It has pretty much gone away.

    I've just picked up the car from the dealer after they have fixed the leaking gasket and the smell was still there when I got home with the car. Maybe it's normal but I still do not like the smell!

    it's normal. my 997S doesn't leak anything and just a few days ago finally the smell went away (2600 miles).

    Everyone says "it's normal" but what is it exactly? It's obviously a burning smell of some lubricant or something. This has come up many times and there was an exact cause that I can't remember.

    I believe it's a coating that Porsche sprays on parts of the engine for protection during shipping/storage, which then "burns" off after a certain number of miles.

    Cosmoline - some drug that evaporates when the car gets hot and gives you the PDO (Porsche Driving Orgasm)?

    No can't be it, I still get the PDO even without the smell.

    Even if it is normal, I still prefer the smell of Castrol R when I park the car

    it's normal, i have 996 same rubber smell .. two of my friends 997s have the same smell when play little bit , don't worry

    Yea, that was what I was thinking of. It doesn't seem to go away in the couple of P's I've owned. 9K here and still get it after driving for a period of time.

    Well quite interesting.. anyway moving from BMW 545-04 model to the 997 S , I think I prefer the smell over the performance diappointments, software bugs, incompetent dealer & lose of individuality ... thanks all

    Totally normal. You'll smell it more after some spirited driving. It eventually goes away mostly.
