Pre 1980 911 to join Monte Carlo Historique

Am now seriously considering to join the Monte Carlo Histroique next year in a second car alongside my brother.

Thinking of a pre 1980 911.....would appreciate all the help I can get in sourcing the right car for the Event.

Bear in mind, that the car will be used and possibly trashed.....you never no.

So am not looking for a show-car.

What would be the best 911 to go for ?

Re: Pre 1980 911 to join Monte Carlo Historique

Does it have to be pre 80? If not, I would recommend a 993 turbo. Or maybe a SINGER indecision Whatever you choose...wish you all the best kiss

Re: Pre 1980 911 to join Monte Carlo Historique

up to 1980...so a 3.0 or an SC I guess.

No turbo's....I want to try and finish the race and not plant it into the first ditch indecision

Re: Pre 1980 911 to join Monte Carlo Historique

I would suggest a 1978 SC. I believe they came with a roll bar too and you can pick one up pretty cheap. Also, if you trash it nobody will really care. indecision

Re: Pre 1980 911 to join Monte Carlo Historique

78 sc would be a great choice. the three prior years porsche had lost its way as it seems to have a habit of doing periodically. doing something cool like that with your brother is something both of you would not forget.please keep us updated

78 or 79 SC model with the 3.0 aluminum block; awesome dependability with a very long life.

75 to 77 with the 2.7 liter magnesium block; great for filling in ditches. Smiley

Re: Pre 1980 911 to join Monte Carlo Historique

might be onto something....a good friend of mine and ADAC driving instructor will check it out over the Weekend.....he will also be my co-pilot should all go to plan...

Why not call tuthill in the UK. They are the expts for rally prepped cars

Couldn't you contact Walter Röhrl in a way or another? I am pretty sure that he knows what 911 would be best for your adventure since he has a lot of experience (and the necessary passion) with classic Porsche and classic race events.

i doubt Walter would waste his time with a first time beginner.

it's highly likely i will shoot for above car. it seems to be a good offer and well prepped. should I find myself immensly enjoying it, I could take the car to the next Level and so on.

    Preis:

    34.911 EUR

    Daten

99.999 km, Hubraum: 2956, 147 kW (200 PS) , Benzin, Getriebe: Schaltgetriebe, Anzahl Sitzplätze: 2, Umweltplakette: 4 (Grün), Erstzulassung: 7/1980, Herstellerfarbbezeichnung: grandprixweiss

    Fahrzeugbeschreibung:

Porsche 911 SC Coupe 3,0 Rallye/ Rennfahrzeug mit H- Zulassung.
    Vorbereitet nach Gruppe 3.

Sounds interesting but I am a little bit worried about the mileage. However, you seem to have somebody who can check on the car, so the risk should be limited. You will have to invest in some major overhaul anyway, unless you want to take the risk and use the car (almost) as it is.

The car looks quite good for it's age...maybe too good. Have your friend check it out very thoroughly. Smiley

If you need a classic Porsche specialist, I know a guy in Ulm who is pretty capable and if he can't help, he surely knows somebody who can. Another possibility would be to use Porsche Zuffenhausen Classic services.

Re: Pre 1980 911 to join Monte Carlo Historique

thanks RC, maybe you could provide me with contact Details.

the Thing is that the Budget has to be realistic for a car that will get serious abuse. it has to be mechanically stout versus a spotless Garage queen.

maybe your contact in Ulm has a car for us to consider ??

the car located in Ddorf is at a dealer that was recommended by a Rallye experienced friend of my co-pilot to be.

Re: Pre 1980 911 to join Monte Carlo Historique

the Price asked about above car is a very realistic Price for a 1978-80 SC in good condition.

Garage Queens fetch up to 70k euro. lesser grade cars are in the 18-20k Region.

Re: Pre 1980 911 to join Monte Carlo Historique

    Hm,

none of the addresses I could suggest seem to have an appropriate car on offer. They are either too expensive, too exclusive or too young. Judging by those prices, the above quote is indeed a decent one.

Does it have to be a 911? Any alternatives that would be practicable to you?

Re: Pre 1980 911 to join Monte Carlo Historique

surely have been thinking about alternatives too....but somehow always come back to a 911.

one of the alternatives was a ferrari 308....but then again am not a ferrari guy so dropped that idea pretty quickly.

Mercedes 280SE came to mind too.

i guess a classic 911 is simply the best all-round package.

Car wise it should be the right choice. SC s are indeed popular for this

Looking good. The kms driven are very low or has it been restored at some point of time? Funny enough, I was remembering your endeavour today and found these (one & two) examples. Hope that helps.

Re: Pre 1980 911 to join Monte Carlo Historique

naturally i'd  be crazy enough to go for a true 2.7 RS to use as a keeper and rallying...then again it is a new endeavour and i'd be a jerk to trash such a beatiful car.....hence, am looking for a mechanically stout car that we carry each other through this first time experience....

Ferdie, apparently the gent selling this car has a lot of rallying experience. As said the car has to be mechanically stout and 'trashable'
