    Re: GT3 RS 4.0

Thanks RC and Easy_Rider - i struggled sitting in my office today as opposed to running out to drive some more.  I am so excited by the car, it is hard to contain it.

I will treat it special.  i am city folk so i don't need a daily driver, just something special for those days i get to drive and go to the track.

RC - I agree, i hope in years to come when my children come to age, I can show this as a way cars used be much as the previous generation shows off their dream cars of yesterday

Sometimes I wish I had got one. Maybe I should consider a used one? I'm sure they are hardly depreciating in the UK and demand is high.

But this is a great toy ... right now my wife wants to replace our kitchen and all major appliances ... I guess my attention is there right now angry

There's one for sale where we purchased our 997S.....the kitchen can wait! But I will leave it to you to tell Mrs Easy. Smiley  Smiley  Smiley Smiley

Parting with something you have had and love is so much worse than never having it in the first place. It's a pity when people overextend themselves. Maybe he just thought he would enjoy it for 1 year then sell for a profit ...

I disagree.  Having the experience of driving the thing as it was meant to be driven is where the value lies.  Ownership of material things is not as important to me (and maybe to Chris).

    As in? Cornering speed?

GT3RS is race/track car disguises as a road car, suspension geometry are optimized for highest mechanical grip, and don't forget it also has wider tires.

458 is a street car through and through that pretends to be able to play on a race track and it does with a level of success. it's suspension tuning probably has less mechanical grip because of street bias, but with the help of higher downforce it 'almost' matches the 'race car'. The numbers are extremely respectable.

    Re: GT3 RS 4.0

Last Summer, I was instructing at a Mid-Ohio track driver education event where a 458 was running around.  I was driving my GT3 RS 4.0 at the same time and (+/- driving talent) the 458 was not faster than my 4.0.   Not at all.

The funny thing is: based on my gut feeling the GT3RS 4.0 is probably the better daily driver than the 458. Ferrari sells it as a "road car", I agree. But where are the actual advantages in daily usage over a GT3RS? Sure, steep ramps are easier to take with the 458. But then... Suspension comfort, noise levels - all not bad in the RS. Plus: the GT3RS is a much better built car, more reliable as a daily driver, lower service costs...

    Re: GT3 RS 4.0

I am amazed that a MANUAL car - where you clearly loose 0.3 seconds or more PER shift - can achieve such a time against a 458. It will be very interesting with PDK....

    Re: GT3 RS 4.0

I've driven both cars and I own a 4.0, difficult to compare them. To be honest, as much as I love Porsche, the 458 nails it for street use, it's more comfortable and the DSG trumps the rather firm and notchy manual box for the 4.0.

On the track it comes as no suprise that the 911 is not only more efficient but also more fun and more race car like to drive as the two of them, it is after all a trackday car adapted to the road, the 458 is a road car that does very well on the track.

They actually complement eachother rather well.

Where did you get the 0.3 sec?  I think that is way over-stated.  Even if it takes someone 0.3 seconds to upshift, the car doesn't come to a dead stop during that time (it just isn't accelerating).  I think the difference is WAY smaller...

On downshifting, there should be no difference with a good driver (since shifting and rev-matching is done during braking).
