Re: Bye Bye M3, Welcome 458 İtalia

    pride355:

    So about rest of review:

One other thing that amazes me about 458 is how it puts down that power. E-Diff and F1-Trac help a lot as much as the mid-engine lay out. Especially in "Race" mode, electronics help a lot to put that power on and you don't even notice the intervene. My M3 had more difficult time to put down its 450 hp (after the exhaust and software update) than my 570-hp 458. I had much more wheel spin with the M3.

One thing I must get used to is the vehicle dynamics. I have been driving an M3 since 1999. I only had an Audi TTS and 997.1 Carrera S just for one year each. So my driving skills advanced with powerful Front engine-Rear wheel drive cars. When I compare the 458 with M3, M3 felt more solid on normal driving conditions. I sit on the nose of 458 and feel less weight while driving. It feels more fragile and less connected than E92 M3. M3 felt rock solid and one piece. I could feel the weight of the car under my pants. The controls of the car was heavier so was the weight transfer. On the other hand, 458 feels soft and light. It is really hard to explain. My 997.1 Carrera S was Rear-engined but it also felt different.

The difference between the M3 and 458 comes once you start taking corners. The steering is very direct. You just turn-in and the car follows. Once you in the middle of the corner you can put as much power as you wish. 458 feels nimble and light. It oversteers but doesn't drifts like a holigan, as M3 did. You feel more relaxed. While driving the M3, you feel the whole mass of the car on your shoulders, which I guess gives you a more solid feeling. On 458, once you turn-in with the correct angle, everything else flows. This makes the 458 a much faster car without considering the extra power. The car just flies corner to corner. Some people may find M3 more rewarding because of its heavier act. But I guess 458 is more rewarding once you are on the edge of the capabilities of the car which are much higher than M3. I haven't pushed my 458 to this edge, though.

The car is fast, there is no doubt about it. What makes it special is the "aura" of the car. There are faster cars already, and there will always be. But the atmosphere and the feel of the car is so special which makes it unique.

    Enmanuel:

Great report ! Thanks for going into so much detail about how the car performs on normal conditions, which is something you don't always hear about. Magazines and reviews focus too much on numbers and stats but the reality is that most of the time these cars are being driven in normal roads where their capabilities are limited. It's interesting to read about how a 458 feels more "fragile" then an M3 on the road, I guess you mean that because the M3 is more complacent to things like road conditions, bumps, holes, and all other things that happen in the real word, vs the 458 which demands more refined surroundings in order to feel at home. I suspect that worrying about hitting the front spoiler on a ditch or the bottom of the car on a speed bump is part of what you call fragile.

Its so great to know that you are enjoying the car so much. And of course you cannot post such a great review without more pictures! You're killing us here!

    En,

By saying fragile, I mean it feels more delicate and the front feels less connected with rest of the car. It feels light. The feel of the ride (how the car goes on the road) is fragile not the car. Maybe, it is too early to make comments like this. But M3 feels more solid. It felt like if you hit a wall, you pass through.

458 is just fine on normal road conditions. Not nervous, not stiff, just serene. "Bumpy road" suspension setting is really comfortable. Although, one should not forget about 235/35/20 front tires. Suspension travel is also more than my comp. pack M3. However, once you start throwing the car to the corners, that disconnected feel goes. You just turn-in and the car flows. It is a different feeling mainly because of different lay-outs. Otherwise, you don't think that you will ever hit the front spoiler of the car. I don't worry much about road conditions. It is just fine.

By the way, you sit much lower in the 458. You are so close to the ground that normal cars are like SUVs around you.

I love the interior. Everything you see in the car either leather or carbon or alum. Only the A/C controls are plastic. There is no plastic mid-tunnel. My headliner is alcantara. The A and B walls are covered with leather. Just being inside of the car is enough to make me happy. You don't have to push it to enjoy. You can only play with the gears to hear different notes of the exhaust at different RPMs.

I want to reserve my final judgement till I take my car to the track. But in the first 500 km, this is how I feel compared to my E92 M3.

Thanks for an excellent, insightful review.  Really gives a good sense of what it's like to drive, and live with, a 458.  Good to hear your enthusiasm for what is clearly a brilliant car.  Smiley

Onur, have you had prior experience with a mid engine car? Much of what you are describing are the characteristics of a mid engine car. It does take some getting use to. However, once you do you will appreciate the unique driving dynamics of a mid engine car.

I'm really glad your enjoying the car Onur. That comment above made me chuckle as I feel like I'm sitting in an SUV in the 458 if I jump into it after being in the Dino.

    Nick,

I'm aware of that feeling is because of the engine lay-out as I mentioned before. I'M not bothered with that feeling as I was bothered with 997.1 rear engine behaviour. Actually, I like this feeling. I mention this because it is one of the most obvious difference against the M3. As I wrote before, in my 13 years car history I owned 4 M3s, Audi TTS and 997.1 Carrera S. 458 is my first mid-engine car.

I was discussing this behaviour of the car, and how it feels loose and light in front and rock solid at the back with all that power and weight and my friend who has a F430 did confirm my thoughts.

Re: Bye Bye M3, Welcome 458 İtalia

Also little update on my driving report:

I drove the car for a while in "race" mode today without putting the suspension in "bumpy road" setting. As a result, that loose/disconnected/soft feeling in front of the car has gone when the suspension is stiffer all around. So when in comfort mode, the front of the car is light/disconnected and soft. Still, turn-in response is very positive and direct. This can be due to self adjustment of the suspension evenif in comfort mode.

However, if you don't put the suspension in bumpy road setting in "race" mode, there is no disconnected feel in the front. The response from the steering wheel direct and solid even on straight line.

The upshifts kick you from your back @9000 rpm. The continuos acceleration never stops even in 5th and 6th gear.

    The more will follow. smiley

Pride355 (aka Onur) is a perfect person for 458 ownership. He apparently enjoys the high prestige and superior aesthetic of the car like all other owners BUT he is also adept to appreciate and master the fine details of driving and handling this Cavallino.

Enjoy your acquisition in excellent  health and good mood.Smiley

Beautiful ! Very classy color combination. Compared to your ex 997 how does it compare from the confort point of view ?(I guess it is not the highlight of the 458 but I am curious about this aspect).
