A brilliant result for the razor sharp tool that is the Cayman R. 
But also an even more amazing result for Toyota, after too many years of producing the most reliable but also the most boring and increasingly unimaginative cars.

I wonder how much Autocar got paid to promote the GT86. 
The best thing about the GT86 is the price tag and maybe the weight. Everything else is not really impressive and the car is boring, to say at least. Not sure who did that test but maybe this description helps and I'm really not trying to be mean here:

It is a back to roots car, with RWD, low weight, thinner tyres, small displacement high revving atmospheric engine and plain interior. It might make a pleasant change for the occasional drive but what is the target market for this car in the European context, at least? I don't think many will get out of their BMWs Audis or downgrade (pricewise) from their entry level Porsches for what this car represents.
I expect used ones (provided a good number of new ones are registered) to find following from the 2025 age group, in the future.
Good effort from Toyota and Subaru, though. I like the Subaru flat 4

The GT 86 isn't German.....

This car will sell very well , at least in our country and the target is not BMW or Audi customers . To me it targets people who can not afford a sporty BMW or Audi but want fun in a car. So it will be the 20- 30 years old , all the ones who used to drive a Subaru Impreza STI , or Golf GTI, or older generations BMW .
It was a very good move from Toyota and Subaru to offer such a car to the younger crowed as it is a car that goes back to basics .

The Toyota will sell around €30.000 which doesn't readily put it within the reach of that age group, in the new car market. 20-25 have to wait for used cars to come in. Around 30 years if they have good jobs they will look for more status, like a used Boxster/ Cayman for example.
However, I think that Toyota must have done their homework more thoroughly than my impromptu "research".

That is cheaper then a Golf GTI , or a Subaru Impreza . People who drive these cars are usually the ones between 20 and 30 over here . They just got their first real job ( usually people who did not go to university but made an apprenticeship ) and can afford the lease that will not be more then about 8 % of their salary .
Now I understand this may not apply to the rest of europe . But over here this age group will afford this car.
