Horrific 160mph Porsche GT2 RS Wreck

    http://www.gtspirit.com/2012/10/10/car-crash-horrific-160mph-porsche-gt2rs-wreck/

A member over at Luxury4Play recently posted a few before and after shots of a horrific Porsche GT2 RS accident. The story behind the photos remains unclear, however, it seems that the red GT2 RS in question had been delivered to a new owner four hours before the accident occurred. As you’ll see from the pictures, there isn’t much left of it.

Apparently the GT2 RS hit a semi-truck mid air at 160mph, even with the full Porsche roll cage, the entire car was crushed into an unrecognisable shape. From the pictures it appears that the engine also set on fire.

Re: Horrific 160mph Porsche GT2 RS Wreck

Doing 160 mph on a public street in the US? I'm not surprised. Drivers there don't expect someone driving 160 mph, so I suppose the semi-truck driver didn't even notice that "something" was coming... Sad. Really sad.

As I have already said in another thread, metal does little to protect you at high speed impacts. This car even had a roll cage which makes it structurally a lot more rigid.

+1, its a sad thing but sometimes people get in situations like these because of their own unsafe behaviour, so I can't say I'm completely torn about it.

Re: Horrific 160mph Porsche GT2 RS Wreck

It's a real reality check on how quickly and how seriously things can go badly wrong at very high speeds. Any modern 911 is capable of speeding at 3 miles a minute........

I have heard of new owners being referred to as 90 day wonders, but this 4 hour business is remarkably efficient.

Re: Horrific 160mph Porsche GT2 RS Wreck

Don't think it had a full cage, but that would have made no change anyway.

How many times have you read on the internet or heard from Porsche enthusiasts that the GT2 is a weapon? I had. Very often.

I remember that when the first GT2 came out, many accidents happened. A lot of 911 Turbo drivers switched to the GT2 without realizing that they actually drive the same car...just without AWD and PSM and with even lesser weight. Two "safety nets" gone for good. I also remember that some customers sold their cars pretty fast after taking delivery...if they survived driving the cars. Smiley

The current GT2 is the definitive street weapon, this is not a car for joking around, this is a car for those who can drive or at least are willing to learn it, having enough respect to refrain themselves from doing stupid things in it.

I always loved the idea of having one but I'm not sure I would have bought one. From time to time, I want to drive at the limit. I'm not sure I am ready yet for the GT2, as stupid as this may sound. Same goes to the Carrera GT: CR, the other founding member of Rennteam owns a Carrera GT. He always suggested that I can have his car whenever I want but I really have a lot of respect vs. the Carrera GT, so I never actually accepted this tempting offer. I know my limits and if Walter Röhrl crashed a CGT during development, it could happen to me too. Yes, it would be a challenge to drive such a car at the limit but at my age, I learned to appreciate other challenges...like making my son do his homework right or making my wife understand that she cannot move my things around in my home office, so I don't find them anymore. Smiley

I feel very sorry for the people in the car but if something like that happens four hours after actually getting the car, I'm not sure if I should really have pity for them. An adult usually knows what he is doing and I think whoever has enough money to spend on such a car, has also the brains to realize the dangers of driving it.

Re: Horrific 160mph Porsche GT2 RS Wreck

    Very well put, RC.

Whenever I see news stories like this one, I vacillate between two conflicting thoughts/feelings: a) "Natural selection at work"; b) "But for the grace of God there go I".

The latter thought kicks in especially when I recall the many spins I had while pushing the limit, as a teenager and college student, in various "pure" sports cars with much less sophisticated suspensions and none of the electronic stability control of today's cars: 914, 911 SC, 944S, etc.

Re: Horrific 160mph Porsche GT2 RS Wreck

There is no need to feel sorry or not for the deceased . He is dead, it does not make any difference to him and he is no longer here to feel anything .

But they are families, friends, around the person who was in that car . So I do feel sorry for what happened as they are suffering a loss.

+ 1' my exact thought too. There is always someone who feels the actual pain..

Anyone know how old the driver was?..

Re: Horrific 160mph Porsche GT2 RS Wreck

I like the comment from Tomas Mezera at the Australian Porsche Driving School: "Every time your PSM lights up: you did something wrong and the car saved you". It is all too easy to believe you are a hero when driving a modern sports car to and at the limit.

That reminds me about 40 years ago another Doctor (friend of my Dad) told him he should give up sports cars. At the time my Dad was driving a BMW which I believe had a carbuerated 1.6 liter four cylinder and a 4 speed manual.

I still wonder exactly what happened to Dr. J...... with his yellow Ford Pantera with a mid-engine 351 Cleveland V8 to have caused his sudden aversion to sports cars???  He was still in fine health, as far as I could ascertain.

very well said......exactly what goes through my mind every time traction lights go on ''now the car is working for you''

Speed has never killed anyone, suddenly becoming stationary... That's what gets you.

Exactly. Also the PSM is not fool proof, you can out-smart it (or better said: you can out-dumb it Smiley). The rules of physics still apply...even with PSM on.
