Some people simply cannot be trusted with a pencil!

This designer should be promoted out of harm's way. Quickly.

Yeah, Frank has left a portfolio as lead designer of long forgotten models in his wake, like the X5, Mini, Ferrari F430

Kidding aside, Stephenson's problem is that the management and perhaps many current F1 owners wanted a reinterpretation of the F1's iconic styling which was of the 90's jelly bean era, which Bangle bashing aside the past 10 yrs, has gotten us used to concave or flat surfacing and sharp swoopy creasing in pretty much every car now from econobox to truck to exotic.

Thank you for making my point. X5 aside, I don't find any of his work beautiful. His designs do have "presence", I suppose (in my book, that's tarring with faint praise), but I wouldn't call any of them beautiful.

Where will the F430 end up in the Pantheon of Ferrari designs? I don't believe I'm the only one to find it to be one of Ferrari's least attractive mid-engined designs (and that includes the 308 GT4 which at least has a certain simple elegance). And at the cost of annoying some members of this board, the MC12 is downright ugly, with that confused rounded front end tacked to what essentially is a Enzo-like angular design. Ditto the Mini, which does not know whether it wants to be a modern or a retro design. Oh, I forgot to start this paragraph with "IMHO".

Take away the guys' crayons, I say, and promote him to a management position.

So, you like that truck of the X5 and don't like the masterpiece that the F430 is?! I need to get myself another lager then! Smiley

I still contend that I like the looks from all angles but straight on - I prefer the back with the tail in the extended position. I think they can improve the front by putting some dive planes or something to break up the front grille - it looks too cartoonish as is.

    Re: McLaren P1 - Official

I still cannot get over how different the design language is from their MP4C12... It just doesn't look right this one.

Did you watch the Drive video?  Leo Parente spells it out very well IMO;  the P1 is not "styled" in the conventional marketing sense, any more than their F1 cars are styled, rather it was "aero'ed" with maximum balance and downforce the objective, and the optimum airflow for these objectives is what determined much of the body panel shapes.  Whether this makes for a more compelling supercar depends on how you feel about looks vs performance and technology, because there are always compromises.

    4Trac,
I kindly -partly- disagree. It is not like they started with a bare chassis and a driver, and started to calculate the optimum shape around that. Of course there is a huge deal of designing involved, even though they may never admit it.
Yes, a lot of the shapes and a part of the overall shape will have been optimized by aero calcs/simulations, but you can count on it that a lot of it is heavily leaning on looks.

It certainly makes a big impression. I also like its rounded fenders.  However, it is rather cartoonish and it resembles something out of a bad sci-fi movie.

    Re: McLaren P1 - Official

Unfortunately , it hews too closely to the iconic F1s mid nineties era jelly  bean body surfacing, which looks dated now that everyone is used to sharp edges and flamed  surfaces , even on econoboxes. The much maligned Chris Bangle's design team  got the last laugh on the whole world.

Same here as well. I think this car will benefit very much from using one single color, preferably grey or black. It will hide some of those too busy design curves. Having said that, I am surely warming up to it.

    Re: McLaren P1 - Official

I found the first press pics to be very misleading. The car itself appears to be very small and that particular design is much more appropriate than on a car of bigger size. Not sure where I read it but the performance of this car seems to be outstanding. It must´ve set new lap records for production cars and be faster than GT3 race cars under same conditions.

    Re: McLaren P1 - Official

Power output and some additional data of the P1 have been published:

It will share the well known, but revised 3.8l-twin turbo V8 from the MP4-12C with an electric motor, which was developed in house by McLaren.

Combined power output will be 916 PS with a maximum torque of 900 Nm.

The car can be driven with in E-mode only for about 10 km, different modes for electric and petrol engines are possible. Electric motor has an instant response, which should provide a sharper throttle response, an enhanced air-changing system is responsible for more top-end power.

E-engine is mounted directly onto the engine, P1 will feature a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox and RWD, as well as DRS and IPAS, which are derived from McLaren's Formula 1 cars.
Drag Reduction System features a rear wing, that can reduce drag by 23% which will lead to increased speed.
Instant Power Assist System will deliver up to 179 PS of extra-power for high performance acceleration through a lightweight battery pack.
Both systems are activate by two wheel-mounted buttons.

    Some more:

Combined torque of 900 Nm is delivered from 4,000 rpm, petrol engine alone produces 737 PS at 7,500 rpm and 720 Nm.

    Re: McLaren P1 - Official

Maybe this is a silly question, but what is the point of having DRS on a road car? I thought DRS was simply a mechanism designed to improve overtaking by stalling the rear wing on straights. In other words, it gives F1 cars the ability to have two different rear wing settings over a given lap. But F1 is bound to fixed aero by the rules, this car isnt. If this car has an active wing - which it appears to have - why not just drop it into a low-drag position when it senses the car is on a speed run?

    Re: McLaren P1 - Official

First, I thought the same, but to improve the lap time in any given circuit during the maximum attack, driver controlled rear will result in best lap times vs. an automated one.

The purpose of P1 is clearly to be the fastest lap time machine as opposed to usability of 918 or the best driving feel of F150.

    Re: McLaren P1 - Official

That is a lot of money for a casual track car - especially when you think of some of the performance numbers of a Radical, Atom, etc.  But I think this car will be special.  Drive at track, turn to comfort mode and drive home in Rolls Royce comfort (this is what blew me away about the MP4)

    Re: McLaren P1 - Official

Annnnd YES! The McLaren P1 is a real number cruncher! :)

    0-100 under 3s
    0-200 under 7s
    0-300 less than 17s
    VMAX: 350KPH (Electronically limited)
Only 375 P1 units will be made.
    Cost: £866,000
With an average speed of 30 mph, the McLaren P1 could travel up to 20km solely in E-mode.
