Thanks for the additional info... Smiley

If I would (or better: could Smiley) order a 918, I would take the Martini Racing (with number 13 though, if possible) design. I can't help it, this just looks perfect.

The least successful part of the 918 is the front.

The intakes and the general impression resemble the 360 Modena, a car that came out in 1999 i.e. previous century.

Re: 918 latest news Thread Closed

Although Porsche refuses to confirm it, I think a true lightweight version with no electric drive and only RWD should be built with even better performance.

    Futch:

Holy crap, that's honestly barely believable!

7'14, 1665kgs, 3l/100. Those numbers shoud NOT refer to the same car! How do they do it??? That's just ridiculous.

Isn´t the miraculous fuel consumption in EU-Cycle based on the fact, it starts with fully charged batteries and exploit them throughout the whole not so long test ?

What kind of fuel consumption can we expect on a longer run on Autobahn (say 300km) with speeds in 200-300km/h range ? Electric engines with their recuperation will regain some energy given away by braking, but I would still expect 15-25l/100km with this kind of usage.

Re: 918 latest news Thread Closed

It is a fabulous looking car though the front end could and should revised. It does  not seem to fit with the futuristic look of the rest of the car. Also, the racing versions and decals clearly detract from the beauty of the car. The car looks much better without them.

Futch, I feel and enjoy your excitement. I haven't felt that way about a car in a couple of years.

I would think they are pretty close to the end of development if they would already have a 58 page brochure full of specs and optional equipment. Now, the 7:14 time is for a prototype, therefore not the time for an official production car. I'm sure once the car is totally out of development and in full production, they'll be able to pull off an even faster time.

But any 918 owner should already own a CGT.  I you wake up feeling the world is ending, drive the 918; if the world looks like its getting better, drive the CGT... kiss

I found this interesting additional info, regarding the Ring time:

*The car had the Weissach package.
*Porsche had one lap to set a time.
*Time was set from a standstill start.
*One of the fastest times set by a street leagl car on standard road going tires.

Since I own a Panamera Turbo S, I don't really care about weight anymore. Porsche apparently has the technical knowhow to make a heavy car drive like a light one. I don't care how they do it, there are a couple of theories here (no kidding, many are asking the same question) but as long as the car delivers, I'm sold.

Reducing weight on street legal production cars is always a compromise regarding cost and safety, I'm glad Porsche found another way.

Regarding the fuel consumption: With me on the steering wheel, this car will eat by far more fuel than 3 l / 100 km and I also think that 6-8 l / 100 km wouldn't be enough, by far. Smiley  Still...impressive numbers for such a product.

I think thats just the cover at the rear deck, looks like they took it off and placed it there while they were checking something. I doubt it'll open that way in the production version.

You don't have to be a physicist to understand that high weight is a disadvantage. No matter how well engineered the car is. Not seen many 2 ton F1 cars Smiley

I still believe there is a good balance between a car's weight and mechanical grip (e.g. road tire's contact patch) to increase the traction for better handling.

Take Caparo T1 for example.  In theory, this car should be faster than almost all of road cars out there, however it is not, simply because you cannot get enough traction into the road legal tires without downforce in low speed corners.
