OMG - after watching the CH video again - it;s unbelievable what Porsche has achieved with such a "heavy" car and putting this in perspective with a P1 and la ferrari - there is one very clear winner here. A technical masterpiece the 918 is !

I suspect McLaren is retooling the P1. indecision

Ferrari evidently needn't be bothered with such PR mundane matters. Ring times are of little importance to them. No way will they publish the Ring time (assuming there is one) of the La Ferrari. No need. All sold out.

Apparently, Porsche and McLaren are fighting for the Silver medal for the most desirable car.

If ferrari not show their ring time then it means they are slower))) Their pr is quite simply there))) Also when presented, they promised under 7 min lap time)))

There is one problem with 918...For such an expensive car they have chosen to produce too much units.

    Re: McLaren P1 - Official

While I used to be fascinated by Ring times, I've recently realized the madness (danger) of it. There is a reason why F1 hasn't raced there in many, many years - crazy dangerous.

IMO, Ferrari owners couldn't care less of Ring times.

I know this is personal and not popular to say here but I much prefer LaFerrari in both design and specs - V12 any day over a V8. The car is stunning. They also limited production to 399 cars, and they are sold out!!

My bad - thanks for the correction.

Forgot to mention its naturally aspirated 6.3 liter V12 engine vs the others' turbo charged V8 units.

I'd take one in red please. Black always hides a car's lines. Just my preference......

    Re: McLaren P1 - Official

    918 has a NA unit.

The only thing I don't like in LF (except some design lines) is the fact that engine has been taken from fellow models. Hypercar must be bespoke.

Could get up to 500 if they build one for the Pope again. Then add another 2 for Alonso and Kimi if they win the championship :) That's 502.

Somehow, I don't see Pope Francis in a LaFerrari.

    Re: McLaren P1 - Official

They built an Enzo for JPII. But Benedict XVI, being the German that he is, returned the car to Ferrari to be auctioned off

While I also don't see Francis in a LaFerrari, that doesn't mean Ferrari won't build one for him, good publicity stunt. But since Francis is Argentinian, I wonder if he would be more receptive to a Pagani Huayra smiley

We believe it when we see it backed up by a video Smiley

Everything else is like Nissan with their GTR, who record a fast lap but then pretend the car ran an even faster lap because they believe they may subtract a few seconds here and there due to sub-optimal driving conditions during the record lap. This is basically a hypothetical assumption or no more than a guess.

On the other hand, even a video can be manipulated : A manufacturer can claim that they used a stock car when in fact the car had additional power, better suspension and stickier tires...

In the end, the fans "want to believe" the numbers. It's the power of marketing.

    Agree.

Not to say, that McLaren had "forgotten" to cut the footage with covered with tapes gaps of the "record" car in their promo Ring video... smiley

What about the rest of the car then...?

Just over look the joker face, the empty rear and the over styled sides and you will realize it's a pretty car.

    Re: McLaren P1 - Official

I don't think it's supposed to be a pretty car. It looks grotesque and weapon like, and I'm becoming completely enthralled by it. It's just so tightly packaged - similar to the F1 - that there doesn't appear to be any excess other than what makes it fast. To me, the LaF has too much bodywork, long overhangs and the like, and doesn't look small or nimble. To me, the P1 is more like an early example of a new kind of supercar.

I would never want to drive something like this on the road, and one can debate about whether or not that is a prerequisite to be considered a 'good' car until the end of time. The fact that the 918, with all its capability, seems like a nice car to drive on the road is a major triumph in this regard. But the P1 as an object? Maybe it's just me, but I find the thing terribly exciting.

    Re: McLaren P1 - Official

For my 3 kids , the P1 is the absolute dream car . The 918 does not excite them as much. The  McLaren is more in tune with the newer generation …… we are getting old !

    Re: McLaren P1 - Official

The embarrassing and comical saga with this so called "car jurno" Steve Sutcliffe continues with this childish explanation on his blog:

    G I'm sorry
    New21 hours 30 min ago
Regards the 5g cornering claim, it’s a long and not especially compelling story, culminating in this official response from McLaren, who just emailed me saying; "We have a slightly embarrassing confession to make, and admit that the information quoted is incorrect - this fact was take from details regarding our Formula 1 car, and not the P1. So these figures relate to the F1 car instead. Sorry for this confusion. For information, the P1 can withstand lateral forces of up to 2g when cornering and braking." I'm sorry, too, that I didn’t spot this dear reader; I should have done. No excuse. And when I say that the P1 feels “as quick as anything I’ve ever driven including a Honda F1 car” I am exaggerating, of course. Slightly. But not by much. The P1 is much, much faster than I was expecting it to be, basically, and maybe it has frazzled my judgment somewhat in the process! Kind regards Steve

    Some conclusions:
    1. Mclaren gave him the wrong piece of press release - very, very professional IMO ;
    2. SS wrote what he get without even reading it, haha;
    3. exaggerating comparisons, but not much? How much is not much?

From the whole review at the end of the day, maybe the date is the only clear fact...

Interesting to know that the battery pack in the 918 has a slightly higher density than the one in the P1, 4.7kwh @ 96kg vs 6.8kwh @ 138kg.

Also, with a 96kg battery and a 26kg motor, factoring in all the wiring and mounting hardware and controllers, I think the hybrid system in the P1 should weight in over 150kg. Wonder why no one is calling for McLaren to take off the hybrid stuff and make the P1 a light weight hyper car.

Did a rough calculation, the hybrid system improves the weight to hp ratio of the P1 by 10%, while those on the 918 is almost 20%.
