What do we think of the New Corvette...

..here are some pics from Road & Track magazine

Re: What do we think of the New Corvette...

hm, i think the car lost his aggressive style completely. it looks a bit like the new Viper...

Re: What do we think of the New Corvette...

I think it has almost 996TT performance for low $40k's (about 1/3 of a nicely specced turbo). 6.0L V8 with 400hp+ and 400ft-lbs+ is base model. The shape is not beautiful, but it is an improvement over the C5. The Z06 version will be out in 1.5yrs with 500HP+ and 500ft-lbs+ at 2,900 lbs for around $60k.

Re: What do we think of the New Corvette...

The front still looks "unintimidating" as it always has. These pics remind me of a Z28 or Firebird front, with Modena 360 lights

Re: What do we think of the New Corvette...

Good looking car, the rear typically Corvette, the front IMO best they could do with fixed headlamps.

    best,
    sr

Re: What do we think of the New Corvette...

The rear manages to look better than before. Previously it looked so ... large.

Re: What do we think of the New Corvette...

I like the rear view but the front view is screaming wanna be 360 and it is not even close

Re: What do we think of the New Corvette...

Not bad if you ask me. Especially for such a low price tag.
I bet the interior looks cheap again but if the engine and suspension sticks to specs and expectations, it should be a bargain performer. I saw the new Viper yesterday, it was a german version with rear quad-pipes. I actually like the new Viper and performance is at Lamborghini Gallardo level, slightly better than the 996 Turbo. Very impressive.

Re: What do we think of the New Corvette...

All of you are saying what I feel. The car looks probably better than all past Corvette models of say the last 10 years, but it doesn't stand out enough to overshadow the competition. The car has an idenity crisis, it's like the guys at chevy wanted to roll a Viper, 360, and C5 Corvette all into one, and that shows a real lack of effort on their part. The rear is probably at it's best. However as with all things, I have to see it in person in order to have a clear picture.

Re: What do we think of the New Corvette...

As too the looks, they are nice, better even than the C5, but the problem IMO is that it looks too much like a Ferrari wannabe, pretends to look exotic-exclusive european sportcar with a low pricetag, so not my cup of tea in that aspect. On the other hand performance wise, the Z06 version should be quite an incredible bang for the buck, kind of like the FordGT in the supercar class.

Porsche better watch those HP figures on their 997 versions becuase the competition is playing hard, imagine the C6-Z06 beating the 997GT3 in Porsche's playground, the ring?, the current already Z06 did 7:56 upon official testing at the ring this year with a bear 20HP over the GT3, so a new generation Z06 with 500HP could be interesting and for $60k.

Re: What do we think of the New Corvette...

Actually Carlos, the Z06 will beat the new Ford GT for less than half the price, since they each have 500HP/500TQ but the Z06 weighs 450 lbs less...

Thats something to think about, impressive. On the side, I think the FordGT packs much more than the current official 500HP in order to achieve the acceleration figures I have seen I think.

I'm not sure about the 7:56 time you mentioned (you have a source?) but I fully agree that Porsche has to be very careful about the power figures on the 997. Unfortunately you shouldn't expect too much. Right now it seems that the question is: 320 or 340 HP?! If true, it would be very very sad.

Re: What do we think of the New Corvette...

RC - John Heinracy was the Corvette driver who did a sub-8 min. run at the ring. The car was totally stock, so I have heard (no mention of special tires). It was a 2004 Commemorative Z06 (new shocks were developed for the 2004 model that came from tuning at the Ring - supposed to be a big improvement). 7:56 is not that hard to believe with 405 hp 400 ft-lbs and 3,050 lbs all loaded (better numbers than 996TT and GT3)

Re: What do we think of the New Corvette...

It seems that the top dog (Porsche) doesn't stay on top forever, but plays catch up every now and then (Corvette). There is a rumor floating around about a high performance version of the Corvette and the media isn't referring to it as the Z06, but the "Blue Devil".

Also for those of you concerned with the quality of the interior, don't get your hopes up. I have seen shots of the whole interior and there is nothing special, it's actuall a big disapointment. Some say that when you buy a car like this, your'e not buying it for quality of cabin materials but performance. This is true, but I still think that the interior design has the potential to do better. I know for a fact that if I buy a C6 that the first thing to go would have to be the seats. Odd observation, yes, but they are terrible! Look just like the ones in the current C5, which are not comftarble at all.

Re: What do we think of the New Corvette...

Yes, the Blue Devil is the supercharged verison of the Z06's 7.0L V8. Unfortunately, this car costs $100k. Since a Z06 is around $60k, I think upgrades for a supercharger, suspension, and brakes can be found for well under $40k

Re: What do we think of the New Corvette...

I think this "Blue Devil" will not go on sale, but will be the Corvette Le Mans car.

If you are looking for upgrades for a Corvette I don't think you could go wrong with Lingenfelter. They do some pretty crazy stuff.

Re: What do we think of the New Corvette...

Yes it was done with a stock 2004 Z06 during GM testing at the ring, I heard the NSX-R did also a 7:56 but either the official published 280HP required by japanese law is BS, or I find that lap time very hard to believe. Anybody have anymore info on that?

Re: What do we think of the New Corvette...

The Blue Devil IS meant for sale to the public - I'm not sure if the Corvette's class at Le Mans would permit supercharging. Anyways, it's meant to be GM's supercar to demolish anything close to its price (625HP+, 625TQ+, 2,900 lbs with carbon fiber pieces).

Well hopefully this is true and Autoweek isn't lying to us about those documents.

700bhp and carbon fiber body would be an absolute dream for me. Look forward to seeing more pics from Detroit.
