458 Scuderia to be called the Monte Carlo - report

According to a recent report, the high-performance version of the Ferrari 458 will eschew the Scuderia name and adopt the Monte Carlo moniker.

The name change would be unfortunate, but the car will reportedly offer 620 PS (456 kW / 611 hp) which is 50 PS (37 kW / 49 hp) more than the standard model. We can also expect revised styling and weight saving measures, but the exact details remain elusive.

There's no word on when the car could be introduced, but the 458 Italia was unveiled in 2009 so a debut shouldn't be too far off.

Re: 458 Scuderia to be called the Monte Carlo - report

What would be the significance of titling it Monte Carlo? Does it have some connection to Ferrari?

Also, this is going to be a quite interesting battle between Ferrari and McLaren. Each time F comes out with a higher output version of the 458, all McLaren has to do is send out a flash update and turn up the boost.

Re: 458 Scuderia to be called the Monte Carlo - report

Would be strange indeed .The only connection I can think of is the Monaco Grand Prix where Ferrari won 9 times (vs 15 McLaren) the first being in 1952 (all F1 wins). McLaren could claim this name on its own road car with more consistency  than Ferrari in this case .

There was a mid-engined Lancia Montecarlo (not Monte Carlo) in the 70s. I am sure Ferrari don't think of that car as the 458 ancestor Smiley

But it does mean that the FIAT Group has secured the rights to the use of the name.

There was a Chevrolet Monte Carlo preceding the Lancia, that ran for many years. Perhaps, this is the reason behind the Italian car being called Montecarlo instead of Monte Carlo

Montecarlo is the name of a small town near Lucca (Italy), by the way , nice town.

That must have been the trick with Lancia sidestepping the Chevrolet naming rights, in the 70s. Montecarlo as in small town not the Monaco Monte Carlo. These Italians always find a way indecision

Reginos , you are right. Italians always find a way , unfortunately not always in the right direction.

Would be indeed strange to name  the F 458 Montecarlo after a thirteen century medieval town in Tuscany. Ferrari Marketing Dept. would have hard time selling that !

Yeh. Before you knew it, they'd start using names like Marenello, or Modena.   Smiley

Re: 458 Scuderia to be called the Monte Carlo - report

Just for fun, before we can have more tech details about the upcoming "Montecarlo" i had a look in my Ferrari books In order to highlight all the models that contained a geographical reference, here we go:

Name and model/s in brackets (only road cars no racing models) from 1947 (not chronological order)

    - Tour de France (250)

    - Europa (250)

    - Daytona (365 GTB/4) this one though was not the official designation but it became sort of

    - Maranello (550)

    - Fiorano (599)

    - Modena (360)

    - Italia (458)

    - Superamerica (410,400, 575)

      - America (375,340)

      - California (250, 365, California)

Let's see what will be next

    Cheers

    Alex

If they keep the displacement at 4.5L (how it is usually done on these racier models) and add 50hp, the HP/L will be an astonishing record (for a production n/a motor),138 frown
