Re: Cheapest right drive country to buy RH 991 s cab and turbo cayenne

    bridggar:

Traditionally, Porsche have never discounted in ther UK - but they do offer flexibility on any part exchange. Not sure if this is changing given 991 sluggish sales though....

That may have been true several years back but those days are long gone. Once the initial flurry of orders for a new model has been satisfied you can obtain strong discounts, especially if you are a good customer. I've had some amazing deals at the front end which is just as well considering the spectacular drop you take on resale.

    Lars997:

Check the second hand market in UK. Its amazing how the cars value drop over there. You clearly can see that they have a small market to sell the used cars to. In Germany the used cars are much more expensive as you basically can sell to the full EU. So - check the UK second hand market and you will be amazed!

The used market in the UK is flat lining at present for a lot of high end cars. I had my 991 in at the dealer this week for a couple of recalls and enquired about the cost to change on a couple of cars in their showroom that caught my eye. My dealer was very apologetic when he told me the best price he could afford to allow for my 5 month old, 2k mile car. It was quite an eye watering shock Smiley so I will be keeping it for a while yet.

I had been thinking about swapping our Cayman R for a new Boxster S but after seeing how much the 991 is depreciating by I'm going to wait and see how the 981 fares in 6 months or so and do a deal on a used example instead. I've had this example on loan for the past 4 days whilst they did the checks on my 991. I really enjoyed driving it.

The car market over here in Germany has started to slow down and it will be even worse in autumn.

I think this is valid for the whole Europe right now, so I would wait with any kind of purchase (new or used) until the end of this year. Just my personal opinion.

Isuk, from what you lars and rc indicate, low mile used may be the way to go...  so isuk please tell how bad the hit was your dealer described, maybe i should get a gt2 and a cayenne turbo instead of a 991 and cayenne turbo:)

altho' the 991 is a giant step forward

i'm looking into a NZ import wrinkle where i may need to "own" the car for a year before i enter it in NZ.  in USA, if seller has title in hand that's failrly easy, i just date the title one year back and never registered it, but i dont know how UK works.

with the dealer a rennteamer has connected me with i may just buy the cars and and have him hold them for a year.

Re: Cheapest right drive country to buy RH 991 s cab and turbo cayenne

btw, XKR's are "cheap" so my wife will be happy, perhaps its the Empire connexion?:

even BMW x5d's are double USA in USD!

I may have to drive a nissan GTR over there, only $150 NZD!!!!

OK, over 220k USD (I already did the conversion) for a used 991 Carrera S? Ouch. enlightened

I would definitely buy my car somewhere else.

What about Hong Kong, Singapur or Australia prices?

Ours certainly aren't cheap here in SA, but I think Australia must be the most expensive place to buy a Porsche on the planet...

Australian prices are ~30% more than NZ prices.  Only NZ tax on cars is GST (15%).  Australia has luxury tax, stamp and GST.  So a car costing NZD200k will cost AUD200k (and FX is ~30% different).

I haven't checked it recently but Singapore should be on par with HK.  HK tax is ~100%.  So their base prices are more reasonable but their sales volumes are much higher.  In HK you pay the tax when the is registered.  So, you used to be able to buy, not register, and ship - but of course now the official dealers do not permit cars to be sold without registration.  However, there are grey market dealers that do.  They used to price everything in USD (HKD is pegged) but now they price in EUR, so last time i looked it wasn't too compelling.  One good thing with Singapore, is that you get some tax refunded when you export - in HK you don't.  Malaysia is another import option as is Japan.

I've also got some friends looking at their 991 options and looking at the UK route too.  I guess GBP/NZD cross is driving ~50% of the savings.

Imported cars have a decent discount and tend to be hard to sell.  You may want to check if this is still possible; if you could show your car was not registered in the country you purchased it (e.g. a dealer letter, along with dealer invoice), and you have low (delivery) km to go with it, you might be able to import it as 'NZ New'.  That is a major pick-up.  I'm not familiar with having to own it for a certain period  - it wasn't the case when I previously did it - is it you need to find a friendly kiwi?

My friend just sold his GTR a few weeks back ... anyway can't compare it with a 991 :)

Re: Cheapest right drive country to buy RH 991 s cab and turbo cayenne

    Watt,

Work on the premise that any used 991 here loses it's VAT element straight away so that's an immediate 20% drop in value the moment a new car leaves the showroom if you were to ask a dealer to write out a cheque to buy the car back. Used prices are all over the place here with some dealers advertising at close to list (wishful thinking on their part IMHO) whilst others are advertising used cars for up to 10% below list. I'd be aiming to pay somewhere around 15-17% below list for a low mileage used example and walk away from any dealer not prepared to negotiate. There are plenty of cars around and not many buyers so you will likely find a great deal somewhere. Stay away from dealers in the larger cities and look to some of the more regional ones for the best deals as they will be harder pushed to find customers in the current economic climate.

If you are not bothered about ordering to your own spec you may also find good deals on unsold physical new stock especially if you wait until the end of a sales quarter when the dealer is looking to hit their registration target to achieve their bonus from Porsche GB. That means phoning around a few dealers in the 3rd week of September and being in a position to put down a holding deposit straight away for the right car/deal   Some dealerships are owned by Porsche GB and are probably less inclined to do a deal as a result. Those owned by the larger dealer groups have access to more group stock and will be more eager to hit sales targets in my experience.

    So Isuk

991 s cab 121 k gbp plus vat is 145 gbp, a low mile used is 17 percent off 121? Or about 100k gbp? Please confirm

do you pay vat again when you register a used car?

    thanks very much!

Just in case Iain isn't around to answer this evening:

The prices you'll find in European configurators generally include VAT, and since the 991S Cab starts in the UK at GBP 89,740 incl. 20% VAT, I'm guessing that any car you might have configured to get to a price of GBP 121k would also include VAT.
If a used car is resold by a dealer, the VAT is effectively only charged on his mark-up (that's why it's called a "value-added tax", so the buyer does not pay a full 20% all over again. It's due on purchase of the car, not on registration, so leaving the used car unregistered would not affect VAT.

Re: Cheapest right drive country to buy RH 991 s cab and turbo cayenne

    watt,

The prices shown on the UK configurator include VAT so a new 991S cab before any options is £89,740 in total. I'm not sure what discount you may get on a new factory order at present as it depends on dealer allocation and if they have any unsold build slots. I think you'd be aiming for around 5% discount on a new order if you are a first time customer with the dealer. You may get more if they are trying to hit a sales target and need your sale to do it. It will also help if you've loaded the car with options.

There is no VAT on used cars. My target of 17% off a used car is based upon the bid on my car and still allowing the dealer to make some margin. If they have cars on consignment from customers then you are not likely to get such a good deal as the owner will not willingly give away that level of cash.
