Care to speculate on 7 speed manual in the 981?

I've driven my 987S for 92000 miles, and I still enjoy it.

I like what I've read about the 981S, but I want the 7 speed manual from the 991. Have there been any rumors about when this might be available? I wouldn't mind paying more, but I do want the taller 7th ratio for long trips on the highway.

Yes I've driven the PDK but it does not interest me.

Re: Care to speculate on 7 speed manual in the 981?

I suspect the 7MT will remain exclusive to the 991 ..

to make 991 more premium, plus Porsche might not want to spend the money to engineer in to 981's drivetrain.

current 6MT on 981 is pretty good !!

Re: Care to speculate on 7 speed manual in the 981?

Not even sure how well the 7 speed manual on the 991 is selling...all cars I've seen so far at my dealer and on the road had...PDK.

I'm not even sure how even the PDK 991 is selling, at least here in the UK, listening to both dealers and the team at the Porsche Experience Centre.....plenty at dealers but I've not seen one on the road yet which tends to support the views that 991 isn't selling well.

Interesting. There are plenty of 991s around here now. I see them every day.

Re: Care to speculate on 7 speed manual in the 981?

I think the 991 is a car the sales of which reflect the comparative state of the economies. It is neither in the supercar "money is no object" class which is potentially recession-proof nor in the affordable premium category. It is an expensive car purchased by self employed business people, professionals and executives and all these have been hit in countries with problematic economies. Apparently, Switzerland is out of trouble, as always

If the residuals are anything to go by, there does seem to be slow sales in the UK. I noted a 3.4 car earlier in the week for sale at £66k - now it's gone up to £69k - but still £8k off list. Makes you wonder what they paid for it.

I'm a buyer of reasonable spec 991 S at £60k - wonder how long I need to wait for £30k drop from list......

Re: Care to speculate on 7 speed manual in the 981?

Indeed I suspect a lot of the buyers who are switching to the 981 from a 997 instead of to a 991 are doing so not only because the 981 is good, but because of the economic climate.  I suspect if the good times were here again that there would not be half as many defectors!

Re: Care to speculate on 7 speed manual in the 981?

The 7 speed manual in the 991 is basicly the ZF manufactured PDK unit with just one clutch. Probably a lot more expensive than the Getrag 6 speed manual in the 981.

Considering that Porsche has a way lower profit margin on a 981 than a 991... why would they decide to ship it with a more expensive gearbox? I think pure economical common sense rules here. The sticker price of a 981 can't justify the 7 speed, it's as simple as that.

Re: Care to speculate on 7 speed manual in the 981?

The 991 7 speed manual was designed for a rear engine car.
If you would fit it to a Boxster you would have 7 gears good for... reverse! lol
So ZF and Porsche should develop a NEW manual gearbox just for the Boxster... which makes no sense especially taking under consideration the Boxster typical client.

And also would mean diminishing the profit margin as posted before :D

Well obviously not wanted I wanted to hear, but thanks for your honest opinions.

I'll wait to see what's available in a couple of model years - after all the 991 3.4 is not ery different from the 981 3.4...

I wouldn't get your hopes up - Porsche will, as always, keep a distance in power between 981 and 991. Just bear in mind that the current 981S PDK is actually faster than a manual 991 3.4, at least according to Autocar's road tests.

I got some hope with the rumoured 981 Turbo if it ever arrives. Given there are Panamera and Cayenne models that are equal or faster then the 911 and that the VW ownership could have a different view on 981 versus 991.

I believe less in keeping a distance to the 991 due to power or performance, but more due to the pricing compared to the 991. The relative lower price for the 981 has IMHO locked it in to the current power and performance. If there is a 350-360hp 981 Turbo coming out which outperforms the N/A 991, how will it be priced? Still considerably lower then 991? Or with a huge price hike to align it with the 991?

All you need to do is flip the angle of the final drive ring and pinion gears. No need to develop a new gearbox.

Re: Care to speculate on 7 speed manual in the 981?

I am pretty sure there is more to do than the technical bits in order to get such task done. Lawyers, approvals, testing and so on. It all comes down to money.

Re: Care to speculate on 7 speed manual in the 981?

The 6-speed in the 981S is amongst the best gearboxes I have ever owned. I don't think a 7 speed would add anything except inconvenience and weight!

Re: Care to speculate on 7 speed manual in the 981?

    Agreed. I don't like the layout of the 7 speed slots. R, 1, 3, 5, 7 in the top row. It's just too many for me. And with only 2, 4, 6 in the bottom row. It should have been spread: 1, 3, 5, 7 and 2, 4, 6, R i.e. 4 up and 4 down (not 5 up and 3 down)

Re: Care to speculate on 7 speed manual in the 981?

I agree, 6 speed manual on my 981S is great, certainly don't see the need for 7 speed

Re: Care to speculate on 7 speed manual in the 981?

The 6 speed manual in the 981 is one of the best, if not the best manual I have driven so far.

The new high stick position is also great.

Re: Care to speculate on 7 speed manual in the 981?

Agree. 6 speed manual is amongst the very best gearchanges available on any manual car today. 1st-3rd are very long gears I suppose for the Nordschleife time but the motor in the S s more or less enough most of the time. 6th is also a pretty long gear so I see no need for an extra gear. If I was to buy a 991 I'd pay extra for 6 gears as I see no justification for 7 other than the eco lobby.

7th gear in the Carrera is useless and just for the Eco lobby, but adding a 7th gear to the GT3 is a huge improvement, since they used the opportunity to make all 7 ratios performance ratios - all the gears are now lower and closer together - this is one of the biggest performance improvements over the 997 version (although it often is underestimated).

Doing this in the manual 981 or Carrera would be a nice improvement, imo.

Sure-but i meant on a manual 991. And actually I might go PDK on a 911 as it works well and the 7speed seems to be the kiss of death for resale and journos say that it is rather poor shift quality compared to the old 'box.

Re: Care to speculate on 7 speed manual in the 981?

The 7sp manual is nowhere near as good as the 6sp but its not as terrible as the journalists make out.  And its much better than PDK angry
