I'm sure they do: the Macan will be heavily inspired by the Cayenne II which was heavily inspired by the Cayenne I which was heavily inspired by the 997 which was heavily inspired by.ll

LOL.
I can imagine that they turn this into a product strategy now: First create a spin-off that is almost similar to the "mother" model and then generation by generation slowly move the design away from the mother model.
Happened with the Boxster, with the Cayenne and with the Cayman, so why not with the Macan?

I find it entertaining that Porsche has to go this far to distinguish the Macan as a genuine Porsche and not a tarted-up Q5; it's like Cayenne vs. Touareg circa 2002/3 all over again.

Porsche: Macan is not a Q5
Porsche insists that the Macan is completely different to the Audi Q5
The Porsche Macan will be a completely different dynamic proposition from the Audi Q5 on which it is based, Porsche’s R&D chief has promised.
Wolfgang Hatz said that the Macan, which is due to be revealed at next year’s Frankfurt show, is “not a Q5 with a Porsche hat on”.
“Everything has been modified,” said Hatz. “Engines, transmissions, suspension — it’s all new. Audi can’t believe what we’ve done.”
He added that “Audi should have no fears” about the Macan stealing sales from it “as the customers are so different”.
Hatz confirmed that the Macan would be the first modern-day Porsche to have four-cylinder engines in its line-up. “Not from the beginning, but in the medium to longterm, for sure,” he said.

I'm afraid there is a substantial difference between the first generation Cayenne and the new Macan: Porsche developed the Touareg for VW, the Macan is not really a genuine Porsche development but a development based on the new Q5 platform. At least this was the information a while ago.
The Macan will take customers from Audi and the Q5, there is no doubt about it. Unless of course Porsche puts a ridiculously high price tag on the Macan.

not that Audis are cheap these days .. everything is optional, and option prices are high
True...this is why my wife went for a BMW X3 35d instead of the new Audi SQ5. For the money she "paid" (lease), she would have gotten a Q5 3.0TDi, not even the SQ5.
Over here in Germany, BMW really has amazing lease offers in this segment, I wonder how Audi and especially Porsche will cope with that in the future.

Actually I can’t believe how amazing the BMW lease offers here in Germany are. I just ordered new company cars. For nearly the same money you get a BMW 5xx or an Audi A4. And for the same money you paid three years ago for a BWM 316 with only a few options you now get a (new model) 320d with some nice options. I don’t know how this can work in the long run.
And also very strange: the guy at the Audi dealer told me that Audi today destroys some of their three year old lease cars when the customer returns the car back to the dealer because they don’t want to lower the used car prices anymore. Actually I can’t believe this story.

This is actually a very interesting story about BMW. We have to dealers in my town, a larger one and a smaller one. The smaller one is actually doing amazingly well and he actually has the best offers in town. How he does it, I don't know but the offers are unbeatable by any other premium brand.
I couldn't care less of course since I profit from these offers but I cannot believe BMW or their dealers are bleeding money. Maybe BMW lowered production cost (by using common parts) that much, that they can afford to offer huge rebates and special lease offers.
I don't have a clue but if the new M5 would have been available with AWD, I would have gone for it instead of the PTS. Amazing offer from my dealer, huge money savings.

Usually, it's down to better control of overheads including managerial costs. In small dealerships, often the owners are working day to day and so they do away with paying others to manage their business.

They will use the Sport Turismo rear lights and red strip? That's an attractive element.
It will steal sales from the Cayenne for those who don't want the extra space but OTOH it will also win sales from medium SUVs from Audi, BMW, L-R etc.

True. I never understood the appeal of the Macan over the Cayenne until we returned the BMW X5M and went for a BMW X3 35d instead. My wife loves the smaller size and despite the much lower hp figure, it still is a very fast commuter due to the lower weight. Luggage room is smaller but not significantly smaller.
