Re: Porsche Back in Le Mans with LMP1 2014

As predicted in my earlier posts and according to Auto Motor und Sport, Porsche plans on start testing their LMP1 early next year (2013) and actually racing it (if the FiA/ACO allow them to) by the end of next year. It wont be scoring points, but the purpose is to gain the experience required so as to have a competitive car at the start of the 2014 season.

According to Wolfgang Hatz, the engine development is going very well and they are already gaining some experience in the wind-tunnel.

Also - Porsche plan to have a GT entry in the  2013  Le Mans as a testing ground for the team.

It will be very interesting to see what car they enter. Will it be the GT3 R Hybrid, or will it be the 918RSR?

    Nice update! Thanks a lot!

Re: Porsche Back in Le Mans with LMP1 2014

I have just heard on Midweek Motorsport (radio Le Mans) that the Porsche LMP1 program has been pushed back a year. This is terrible news, and I'm trying to confirm this .

If anyone has a contact at Porsche Motorsports, please try and find out more concerning this situation.

Re: Porsche Back in Le Mans with LMP1 2014

This sounds strange.  Just a couple of days ago, we heard that the programme was going well and that the car would be tested in early-2013 (and even raced later in the year).  Now there's talk of pushing the programme back by a year.  Hopefully this is not true - but where there's smoke, there's usually a fire...  Smiley

Re: Porsche Back in Le Mans with LMP1 2014

OK - I have managed to track down some information. The supposed delay is not confirmed yet, and it has to do with a rumored delay in the 2014 regulations being released by the ACO/FiA.

    Lets see how this evolves.

This is a fantastic podcast made by Motorsport Magazine with Derek Bell this past week.

I strongly recommend taking time to listen to this. Plenty of Porsche 917& 956 stories and also Le Mans.

Re: Porsche Back in Le Mans with LMP1 2014

I know not many of you are appreciating the diesel LMPs but Audi just announced some details about their R18, which will perform in Le Mans and the WEC series this year in regular guise as well as all-wheel driven hybrid. Both cars are effectively identical apart from the hybrid drivetrain which is connected to the front axle to recuperate during braking procedures and adds the additional drivetrain to the front wheels. Since both cars are supposed to meet the mandatory minimum weight the hybrid-less variant is exceptionally light excluding the additional ballast weight.

I am pretty stunned about the technological progress in this series, most drivetrain-related technologies in current time have been exhaustively tested at Le Mans. The arrival of Porsche and Toyota will make the race even more entertaining.

Great stories, would´ve loved to listen another four hours to his narrations.

By the way, what is the current state of Audi´s and Porsche´s activity at Le Mans. Any predictions about Audi´s future plans in motorsport? Wouldn´t believe that both group brands will race against each other...

Re: Porsche Back in Le Mans with LMP1 2014

No news Ferdie, but the last that I heard VSG had agreed that both Audi could race against each other as long as their Hybrid 's were different. In other words: Audi diesel Hybrid, and Porsche Gasoline Hybrid.

BTW - Both Bernhard and Dumas will not be in the Audi Hybrid due to their involvement in the Porsche LMP1 2014 project.

Glad you enjoyed the podcast. It really is great. I too could have also gone on listening for hours.

Rumor has it that the ACO2014 engine rules will be as follows: 1.6L, V6, turbo

Re: Porsche Back in Le Mans with LMP1 2014

    As same as F1?

Re: Porsche Back in Le Mans with LMP1 2014

    Yes,apparently so.

Re: Porsche Back in Le Mans with LMP1 2014

Interesting details: The TAG- Porsche F1 1.5L V6 twin turbo engine developed 960bhp in racing trim and 1,100bhp in qualifying. Granted that there was a 4.0 bar limit on the turbo.

As long as they allow for twin turbos, and set the turbo boost at a reasonable level, we may still get to see some exciting engine power from the LMP cars. (although in today's world, i am not very optimistic).

Re: Porsche Back in Le Mans with LMP1 2014

Great news about engines! Powerful and reliable 1,6 l turbo is a great challenge.

1100 bhp in quali - only for 1986 - when there were no limits. 100 less in 87. Also, interesting fact - Porsche has never built quali engines in turbo era. They took advantage, as Mezger said, in balance of hp, weight and optimal power distribution to road surface.

For le mans we should expect figures around 650 hp+kers. Hope they will also decrease the weight of LMP1 to 750 kg level.

Yes, 650hp + KERS is very likely.  If they do decrease the weight, then we will have some reasonably quick cars.

The figures I quoted for the TAG engine were only to illustrate the potential that exists in this engine layout, so if the PC drivel eventually abates (which is not very likely) then the wick can easily be turned up by a simple alteration of boost levels and energy levels in the rules.

The problem is the 3:30 time target that the ACO/FiA have for a lap of Le Mans.

One of the most interesting thing of f1 turbo era is BMW turbo engine. It was the only engine that was capable 1400 hp with 5.6 bar pressure boost being PRODUCTION based. But being production it was heavy...

We will get quite fast cars if they decrease weight. 900+ kg is too much... Also, I think that soon the power balance will go to KERS. It will give more power.

Agree with Porker, unfortunately we will never see such insane cars like Porsche 917/30 with 1580 ponnies...

They will not be able to reduce the lap time to 3-30. Manufacturers will be able to compensate the lack of HP with other tweaks. Also, FIA and ACO are interested in increasing of public and manufacturers interest, so lowering speeds is not the best way to...anyway we will see)

I am not even sure they will arrive at 650+ hp as this power figure is only required to be faster than the LMP2 and GT cars on the straights. I could seriously imagine that they will limit output to less than 600 hp but put a bigger emphasis on the KERS technology and allow them enough thrust for the straights.

Unfortunately La Sarthe has to have it's license renewed by the FiA  and 3.30 is deemed as the ideal average lap time over a stint (for safety reasons). If  the cars are constantly breaking this barrier (under race conditions) , then we can expect further alterations being made to the track.... and no one wants to see that.

This is not yet clear. Current regulations still limit the hybrid storing capacity to 500 KJ. This may change in the 2014 rules. We will find out in June.

Its better to make changes to track than to cars making them heavier or less aero effective. I don't  see any problem if they add some corners or slow chicane on 3rd sector (don't touch indianapolis!Smiley), nearby Porsche curves.

But.. you know that is not what they will do. They will attack the Mulsanne straight like they did in the past.
