Re: PDK in the next 991 GT3?

Am I the only one who thinks that the wing is actually not that bad. Could it be that it can be raised?

What I don't like much more is that they carry the central locking wheels over from the current generation. This is really a huge PITA. Would love to see this at least as an option that can be deleted. Additionally, I hope that they will keep the mesh in the front spoiler, which is quite helpful since you won't have to almost crawl into these holes to get all that garbage out that is overwise collected in there.

"Spied recently on the Nurburgring, the new 991 GT3 shows an evolutionary design from the previous GT3 with a more aggressive front bumper, center dual exhaust and large rear wing. The 3.8-litre engine is expected to be upgraded to 470 bhp..."

Re: PDK in the next 991 GT3?

470 bhp would be quite a lot for the "non-RS" version.

Re: PDK in the next 991 GT3?

    Gauss:

470 bhp would be quite a lot for the "non-RS" version.

But obvious/necessary to keep the usual ~30hp distance toward the Carrera S with X51 option.

Re: PDK in the next 991 GT3?

The real problem with the GT3 could be timing.  Assuming that it is shown at the Geneva Car Show in March, and available from about May or June, there may only be 9 months or so until the GT3 RS is likely to see the light of day. The latter has become a more distinct possibility recently, partly because the new 991 based GT3 RSR will be based on it and race in the 2014 season.

One  of the things which reportedly may hold up the RS is the development of a road worthy sequential gearbox, but that could be skipped in favor of a normal PDK box. So if you are keen on the new GT3 but ultimately want to trade up to the RS, there is precious little time to enjoy the former...

Re: PDK in the next 991 GT3?

    Hi Olli +Jesse

Olli - I dont really see the difference between the 991 GT3/RS launch timing and previous generations? The information I have suggests June/July GT3 production starts with deliveries from late July onwards. The only information I have read is that the 991 GT3RS will arrive at a similar tie in 2014. It would be a departure from history for Porsche to stop the base GT3 as being the platform from which the GT3RS and subsequent competition cars are based. I think we could be second guessing Porsche here.

Jesse. Previously stated on this thread is an expectation of 455 bhp for the 991 GT3. As the 3.8S comes in at 394 and with power-kit option perhaps 425 then the 30 bhp "difference" you speak of is still there.....and it will be a lighter car with larger brakes and suspension better tuned for handling with possibly some software changes to the gearbox and steering. I think there is little doubt we are talking 3-4 tenths+ quicker to 100 (3.7-3.8 sec) and a considerable improvement around tracks such as SPA and Ring...

Re: PDK in the next 991 GT3?

I concur with Macca on timings. My OPC has confirmed 991 GT3 RS will come November 2013, which I believe follows the same schedule as previous generations? Regardless those who choose a GT3 choose a GT3 otherwise they would choose an RS :)

Re: PDK in the next 991 GT3?

Macca, my previous information was that the GT3 would be available in time for "club sport"season 2013 and be the top 991 dog in 2014 as well, as the RS would only be available from late 2014.my plan was to get the GT3 early on on then trade up to the RS in early 2015. That plan is now longer sensible, as the RS will probably appear faster than that. I was not suggesting that the GT3 would be phased out when the RS is introduced.

Boytronic, I hope your are right, but it may take a little while longer for the RS to appear. I seem to remember that it took  well over a year for the 997.2 RS to follow the 997.2 GT3.

Re: PDK in the next 991 GT3?

    Interesting Olli.

The information I have found so far suggests the GT3 launched at Geneva in March 2009 and the RS launched at Frankfurt in September 2009, with deliveries of the RS starting spring 2010. So the gap was around 6 months?

Re: PDK in the next 991 GT3?

Boytronic, I checked the facts, and you are absolutely right!

Still, 2013 will be a busy year for Porsche, starrting with the new Cayman at the LA show, the new GT3 in Geneva, the Panamera facelift probably squeezed in somewhere in between and the grand finale at the Frankfurt show in September, where the new Turbo and the Macan will be in the spotlight.

The question then is, will they use up an additional bullet by introducing the new GT3 RS in Frankfurt as well, and if not, how much later would they do it?

Re: PDK in the next 991 GT3?

Don't forget the 918's global production debut on September 18 [9/18 - how fitting]. My guess with the Panamera facelift is that we'll see it at a Chinese auto show in either Beijing or Shanghai in April; fitting as China is one of the biggest Panamera markets and how the car was globally unveiled there back in 2009.

With all that's going on, this could be our tentative timeline for the next 12 months:

    November 2012: 981 Cayman
    March 2013: 991 GT3
    April 2013: 971 Panamera
    September 2013: Macan, 991 Turbo, 918 Spyder
    November 2013: 991 GT3 RS

Subject to change, naturally. I'd personally love to see a Macan concept before the unveiling; AutoBild had a piece [with the recent green Macan rendering] about us seeing something like this by Geneva in 2013. Any input from the more informed among us?

A November 2013 release would only be possible if the 991 GT3 will be available latest May 2013.

We need to be careful not to confuse the press release/presentation dates with the availability dates at dealers. Smiley

Re: PDK in the next 991 GT3?

Yes RC I agree - I am not sure whether my dealer was referring to November as the press launch or availability to order date for the RS.

But if the 991 follows the 997 timetable we could see the GT3 RS sitting side by side with the 918 at Frankfurt in September 2013 - that would be a treat :)

Macan - Definitely introduced in Frankfurt 2013 - First customer cars by the end of 2013
991 Turbo - Most likely introduced before Frankfurt 2013 - Probably early summer 2013

Isn't the 991 Targa parading around as a 2015 model? If that's the case, we won't see it until early 2014; Geneva would make sense. Let's not forget the upcoming special edition 911 commemorating the 911's 50th anniversary due to be unveiled in Frankfurt; with so much happening in 2013, I wonder where Porsche would squeeze a new Targa in.

Is there a logical reason for testing in SF? I guess they could test the parking brake and recreate that scene from Bullitt...

Yep, they go all the way up the west coast and past Vancouver. I've seen a whole testing convoy many times heading into the mountains of Whistler on the Sea to Sky highway! Porsche puts millions of miles on any given model and they test pretty much in every ecosystem.

Hi watt -- this article was based on an early 991 mule doing some cold weather testing, reported in February 2012...
