    Cracked manifolds

As per the title, the car is having some attention from Hartech at the moment. Short story is that both exhaust manifolds have cracks in. Cost is about a grand each side. SmileySmiley

Note, it has been 'ticking' for about 3 years now. Revently has become an obvious exhaust blow. OPC diagnosed firstly a joint in the middle of the exhaust, and then at a later date (after I got that fixed) that it was actually likely the exhaust manifold gasket.... And by the way sir, changing the gaskets is a tricky job.

It seems the bolts are prone to snapping on removal. Why is it always like this with Porsche? How hard is it to fit bolts and fixings that don't disintigrate in a couple of years? Seriously?

    Re: Cracked manifolds

Quick update. The guys at Hartech replaced both manifolds, managing to only snap one bolt, so that was really good going. Really appreciated them taking their time and being patient.

The manifolds have cataysts attached (986 didn't), hence the expensive part. Together with a full service, the car now pulls strongly and cleanly from low revs again.

If you find Hartech's site in Bolton within range I'd definitely recommend the company to do any work, as they are genuinely interested in fixing cars properly, with care, and treating you like a valued customer not a £ sign. Smiley

Reading some of the lengthy technical articles on their website, and knowing they prepare and race their own cars, only adds to the level of confidence imparted by the company. www.hartech.org

Glad your car is back to fine health once more wsnet kiss Sounds like you've found a good outfit to do the job. Guess you'll have the car looked after by Hartech from now on.

Thanks for the update! So you keep the car a little longer?

Glad things worked out for you Andy..kiss

That's a heck of a trip though... Bath to Bolton, or have you re-located to the North-West?

    Re: Cracked manifolds

Yep, it was a bit of a trek to be sure, but I thought I'd put my trust in their on-line reputation (See pistonheads) and it appears to have paid off. Things feel better serviced than normal, and dare I say it, the suspension is also a lot better. They took the time to do a full hand-over re-boot of all systems, so we'll see if that makes any difference to the PASM long-term.

Have a sneaking suspicion that the long-standing suspension problems, (where it often was rock hard) might have contributed to the manifold cracking but you never can tell. We'll see.

The other aim of getting Hartech to do the work was to give the car a full health check, with internal inspection of the cylinders (no cracks or scoring, which is good news Smiley) with a prelude to taking up their warranty plan. This is a monthly payment which covers servicing and labour charges for any work that needs doing. (So if the engine lets go, the labour is covered, and they have the expertise to fix).

After many years of getting not quite satisfactory service from OPCs, it was time to try something new.

Big drive and awkward logistics though.

Depends on the other half. I think she was steaming about the £4k bill. Smiley
