How long will you keep your Porsche

Re: How long will you keep your Porsche

Son turns sixteen in 10 years. Maybe I'll give it to him.

Re: How long will you keep your Porsche

    GA997S,

You must be an awesome dad!

I tend to keep my cars for a long time- at least 5 years. I'm sure I'll keep this baby forever!

Re: How long will you keep your Porsche

Until first major repair AFTER the warranty expires. Could be years....

Re: How long will you keep your Porsche

until the cops prey the keys out of my dead cold hands.

Re: How long will you keep your Porsche

Up to 4 years would make a little more sense as that's when the warranty runs out

Re: How long will you keep your Porsche

I've only owned one P Car past the warranty period. I'll never do that again . . .

Re: How long will you keep your Porsche

I will probably keep the Porsche until the next generation 998 comes out...

Re: How long will you keep your Porsche

    until the warranty is up.

Re: How long will you keep your Porsche

3 to 4 years.. or when there is a model change

Re: How long will you keep your Porsche

Until the warranty runs out (only 2 years in UK) or longer IF I can take out an extended warranty which comprises identical cover!

BTW - Anyone know why it's only 2 years as opposed to 4 years in US.

Re: How long will you keep your Porsche

in Greece and most europe countries is 2 years but you can extend it every year for one more year for the first 10 years!!!

Re: How long will you keep your Porsche

I usually keep my cars 3 to 4 years. The 997 will surely change that.I just don't see myself driving anything else for a long while.

Re: How long will you keep your Porsche

I will try and keep mine for another 3 years. At that point my kids will be older and too big to fit into the back seat. It will be time to get something else.

Re: How long will you keep your Porsche

So the dealer can make some more profit.....??!

Re: How long will you keep your Porsche

May be because the speed limits are much more relaxed in Europe (or even non-eistent). Would allow you to legally push your car more and thus cause more wear.

Just a guess on my part though.

Re: How long will you keep your Porsche

Out of warrenty repair of my defective CD player (PCM) would have cost me us$2400 (two thousand four hundred). Simple ignition part for a lawn mower cost us$130! A colleague's antidepressant medication costs him us$22 (twenty two) dollars a day.

Seems to me near-criminal extortion of the customer for after-purchase-maintenance has caught on and will soon be a universal fact of life.

I wonder how much this car is gonna cost me to keep it ten years. Maybe another us$20K for a few "major" repairs?

Add to the the fact that it is heavily computerized and it gets scary.

Re: How long will you keep your Porsche

I'll keep mine until the Consumer Fraud Case is through the court system and the case of bad paint/bondo/concealed damage is finalized....

Am I missing something here? Isn't the Porsche warranty only 2 years?

Re: How long will you keep your Porsche

A choice of "up to 4 years" (the US warranty period) would have been nice.

Re: How long will you keep your Porsche

In the US it's 4 years. Why? I think the best answer is that they can get away with only 2 in Europe. That sucks for you guys.

As I said above only 2 years in UK, but 4 Years in US!!

    Still not sure why,

Re: How long will you keep your Porsche

A lot of people seem to be concern about the warranty expiring... That scares me....

Me too. Are Porsche's less well put together than VW's? I have 150,000+ miles on that car and no major mechanical problems. Anyone have access to typical 'large' charges outside warranty? Clutch, brakes, timing chain??

Re: How long will you keep your Porsche

I don't get the concern with the warranty....I've been driving a '97 Boxster since '99 without serious heartburn. Typically, I am spending under $2000/yr for maintenance including tires. A drop in the bucket compared to on-going payments. For me it is more the annoyance of assorted minor electrical problems that gets me cranky. Fingers crossed, the only major repair was replacing most of the mechanism for the top! Thankfully, even though the car was well out of warranty Porsche covered it as a defect. Last year I replaced the top with a good third party top at a quarter of the price as available from Porsche. Even allowing for differences between a Boxster and a 911, I don't see why someone who can afford the price of entry would be wary of the maintenance costs.

I really hope this is the case as I'm getting ready to buy a 997S in the next year.

I think it has something to do with paying for it over 3 or 4 years. It would be nice to know that while your still paying for it it's covered under warranty.

Re: How long will you keep your Porsche

My worry was with the 996 motors and the 997 3.6 motor. I heard of too many engines dumping coolant either in the oil or on the road. The 3.8 as far as I know has much improved reliability/warranty issues.

The main worry on the 997's for me is that if anything goes wrong with one of the major electronic components it's a main dealer job. For example the codes to set up the PCM and all of the associated electrics are only held by Porsche and not available to anyone else. So whatever happens, once you are out of warranty you are still tied to your dealer/labor rates and so on. On the older cars most jobs can be done economically at specialists. So for me as the first owner I'd extend the warranty for GBP1000 per year as an insurance policy. But if I were buying a 997 out of warranty I'd have a real concern as these cars are even more complex than their predecessors.

In this case I suppose it's good news for franchised dealers.

Re: How long will you keep your Porsche

I think the thing is nobody likes to get $crewed. With my BMWs over the years I paid big maint bills but wasn't completely pi**sed off by the amounts.

Gotta feeling that's not gonna be the same case with THIS car. As I mentioned, my CD player didn't work and that would have cost me us$2500 to fix; if I had to pay for that out of my own pocket I would have felt massively screwed by Porsche. I mean it's just a GD CD player!

Can you imagine your reaction to a us$4000 repair bill for something as "boring" as PASM when it's out of warrenty?

Re: How long will you keep your Porsche

cobalt blue 997s stays til sept. when 997tt arrives.
